Acute Mesenteric Ischemia In Patients With Covid-19, Tristan Fun, Natalie Hurlock, Danielle Ford
Acute Mesenteric Ischemia In Patients With Covid-19, Tristan Fun, Natalie Hurlock, Danielle Ford
North Texas GME Research Forum 2024
Introduction: Patient with COVID-19 are more likely to have thrombotic events, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). There have been many case reports of patient with acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) in the setting of COVID-19. Incidences of AMI occur in about 0.1% of acute hospital admissions. Short term mortality from AMI range from 26-86%. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are essential, yet diagnosis is difficult and AMI can often go unrecognized as a cause of death. This study attempted to establish the risk of patients with COVID-19 having acute mesenteric ischemia and compare …

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024
The Syndrome of Trephined (SoT), also known as, "sinking skin flap syndrome," is a rare neurological complication that can occur after craniectomy. It can manifest with various reversible neurological symptoms such as headaches, mood changes, cognitive impairment, and focal neurological signs. The underlying pathophysiology of SoT is not completely understood but is believed to result from changes in intracranial and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics due to the loss of the protective cranial enclosure following craniectomy. Despite its rarity, healthcare providers should consider SoT as a possible diagnosis in patients who develop neurological deficits after undergoing decompressive craniectomy, even if their symptoms …

North Texas GME Research Forum 2023
This is a unique case of a 38 year old Caucasian female with no significant medical history who presented to the hospital with complaint of 3 days of abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, dark red formed stool, and fever (TMax 102F), as well as dizziness, body aches and throat pain. She reported eating meatloaf with her daughter two days before symptom onset, and daughter was reported to be ill as well. Upon initial exam, patient was found to have temp 100F, was hypotensive and tachycardic with lactate of 4.2. FOBT was positive. Significant lab values include creatinine 3.39 (baseline normal), hemoglobin of …

Methicillin resistant staph aureus (MRSA) Bacteremia has become a serious re-emerging infection. As per the Centers of Disease Control (CDC), the worsening opioid epidemic has created a snowballing effect, in that there is not only an increase in invasive MRSA infections but also in complications from MRSA. Early source control through the form of early foci identification, obtaining serial blood cultures, decolonization and hygiene measures, appropriate antibiotic stewardship are used to eradicate this bacteria and prevent its spread. There are multiple challenges in treating injection drug users with MRSA bacteremia is not only in medical management but also in trying …

An Interesting Twist: An Adult Midgut Volvulus Presenting As A Transverse Colon Volvulus, Both Rare Phenomena, Allison Walworth, Danielle Ford
North Texas GME Research Forum 2023
Introduction and Case Presentation: We report an unusual case of an adult midgut volvulus presenting first as a transverse colon volvulus. A 62-year-old man with no significant past medical history presented to the emergency department with complaints of intractable nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain for twenty-four hours. He had been evaluated at an outside hospital where an abdominal and pelvis computed tomography was read as a transverse colon volvulus, a vanishingly rare medical condition. A CT reimaging of the abdomen and pelvis illustrated a whirlpool sign in the region of the small bowel, consistent with a small bowel volvulus. In …

Neonatal ascites is a condition characterized by abdominal distention resulting from the accumulation of fluid within the peritoneal cavity and is life-threatening if not treated appropriately. Genitourinary abnormalities and urinary ascites are important to consider as part of the differential for newborns presenting with abdominal distention and ascites. In male infants with urinary ascites, presence of a posterior ureteral valve is a common etiology, accounting for up to 70% of cases. In this setting, early identification and management of urinary outlet obstruction is essential to prevent progression to autodialysis and uremia. …

Introduction: Critical Limb Threatening Ischemia (CLTI) presents a significant challenge, particularly for individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM) or End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD). Healthcare disparities related to race and ethnicity are a pressing concern. This study aims to examine a 16-year trend to assess whether the disparities in managing critical limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) are diminishing among individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM) or End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD).
Methods: The analysis involved an examination of the National Inpatient Sample data from 2005 to 2020, with a focus on hospitalizations related to CLI. Identification of …
