Student Papers, Posters & Projects

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is a debilitating syndrome typically characterized by orthostatic headache and classic brain MRI findings. However, brain MRI abnormalities are indirect manifestations of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) volume depletion rather than direct evidence of the leak, and some patients may present with unrevealing or absent typical brain MRI findings, posing a considerable diagnostic challenge.

METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus was conducted to perform a systematic review, according to PRISMA guidelines, analyzing the available evidence on MRI-negative SIH (patients without typical SIH findings on their initial brain MRI), including its clinical features, …

Clinical Utility Of Diffusion Tensor Imaging In Sport-Related Concussion: A Systematic Review, Shiv Patil, Rithvik Kata, Serhat Aydin, Mert Karabacak, Konstantinos Margetis, Sotirios Bisdas

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

OBJECTIVE: Sport-related concussion (SRC) is a prevalent form of traumatic brain injury that is associated with long-term neurological and psychiatric impairment, particularly among athletes with a history of repetitive concussions. The biological variability of SRC's impact on the brain, as well as a lack of objective biomarkers to diagnose and prognosticate concussion, has prompted interest in advanced neuroimaging methods such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). By measuring disruptions in water diffusivity due to head trauma, DTI can detect alterations in white matter integrity that are not visualized by conventional imaging methods. This systematic review aims to synthesize major trends and …

Bilateral Small Vessel Strokes In A Young Male With Coccidioidal Meningitis And Suspected Cns Vasculitis, Hugo Zamarron, Ahsan Ali

Research Colloquium

Background: Cerebral small vessel strokes in young, otherwise healthy adults without traditional vascular risk factors are rare and warrant further investigation. Central nervous system (CNS) vasculitis is an uncommon etiology that may be triggered by infections, including fungal pathogens. This case is notable for a suspected primary CNS vasculitis manifesting as bilateral deep infarcts in the setting of Coccidioidal meningitis. It highlights the importance of considering fungal infections and vasculitis in the differential diagnosis of stroke in younger patients.

Case Presentation: A 32-year-old previously healthy male presented with fever, headache, and was diagnosed with aseptic meningitis. He was later readmitted …

The spinal cord is a highly dynamic network, playing significant roles in the vital functions of the brain. Disorders of the spinal cord, such as spinal cord injury and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), are associated with neurodegeneration, often resulting in morbidity and mortality. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) poses a major challenge to imaging and therapeutic agents because less than 2% of small-molecule drugs and almost no large-molecule drugs can cross the BBB. Furthermore, spatial spectroscopy studies have shown highly heterogeneous BBB crossing with significant accumulation at the unintended brain regions. Thus, targeting systems that can cross the BBB at the …

Biofluid Biomarkers Aid In Diagnosing And Developing Improved Treatments For People With Alzheimer's Disease, Jonatan A. Lopez

University Honors Theses

Dementia is a disease in which daily life is disrupted by a loss of cognitive function. Late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common dementia that largely begins to affect individuals in their mid 60s or older. AD was selected as the focus of this paper because it is the most common form of dementia, accounting for 50-70% of dementia cases. A typical diagnostic approach used by physicians starts with a simple clinical test, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), when cognitive decline is suspected in a patient. Then if there is enough evidence to suggest AD, a physician would order …

Microneedle-Based Lc-Ms/Ms Profiling Of Dermal Interstitial Fluid Reveals Early Lipid Dysregulation Contributing To Painful Neuropathy In Prediabetic And Type 2 Diabetic Rats, Srinivasa Rao Gadam Jul 2025

Microneedle-Based Lc-Ms/Ms Profiling Of Dermal Interstitial Fluid Reveals Early Lipid Dysregulation Contributing To Painful Neuropathy In Prediabetic And Type 2 Diabetic Rats, Srinivasa Rao Gadam

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN), a complication of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, also occurs in obesity and prediabetes, with dyslipidemia as a modifiable risk factor. The distal-to-proximal neuropathy pattern and length-dependent intraepidermal nerve fiber loss suggest peripheral contributions. We hypothesized that elevated neurotoxic lipid intermediates—diacylglycerols (DAG), free fatty acids (FFA), and acylcarnitines (CARs)—in the dermal interstitial fluid (ISF) drive metabolism-associated hyperalgesia in prediabetic and diabetic rats. Using a microneedle array (MIA) with LC-MS/MS, we profiled ISF and serum lipids from high-fat diet (HFD) and HFD + streptozotocin (STZ) rat models alongside Hargreaves testing. ISF lipid changes appeared earlier (weeks …

Imaging Hallmarks Of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension And Insights Into Pathogenesis, Albalooshy Basimah, Scott Faro, Hsiangkuo Yuan, Kiran Talekar, Prabath Mondel, Enchao Qiu, Joga Chaganti

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

Idiopathic Intracranial hypertension (IIH), also referred to as pseudotumor cerebri, is a term used to describe increased intracranial pressure in the absence of a known identifiable secondary cause. Despite advancements of neuroimaging techniques, imaging of the pathological underpinnings in the diagnosis of IIH has been limited. Although the causation of IIH has been ascribed to increased Cerebrospinal Fluid production and disordered drainage through the dural sinuses, new evidence shows that the glymphatic system which is an alternate pathway of drainage is likely to play a pivotal role. In this review, we address the pathophysiological underpinnings in the causation of IIH …

Optimal Diagnostic Strategies For Concussion-Related Vision Disorders: A Review, Iniya K. Adhan, Kammi B. Gunton May 2025

Optimal Diagnostic Strategies For Concussion-Related Vision Disorders: A Review, Iniya K. Adhan, Kammi B. Gunton

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

Concussions are a mild form of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that is typically self-limited and transient with a high prevalence within our communities. Due to the vast visual network interconnectivity, visual symptoms secondary to a concussion occur about 90% of the time. A gold standard to confirm concussion acutely has not been well established. Visual function testing based on symptoms remains the standard of care in off-site evaluation for diagnosis of oculomotor dysfunction. This review covers the current diagnostic strategies for vision based disorders post-concussion for sideline testing, off-site testing, and research driven testing.

Autoimmune Encephalitis Presenting As Pseudodementia (Case Report), Renita Ng, Christie Richardson

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Patients with autoimmune encephalitis frequently present with psychiatric symptoms including psychosis, behavioral changes, and affective disorders. Because of this, misdiagnosis of a primary psychiatric disorder in a case of autoimmune encephalitis is not uncommon. We present a case of autoimmune encephalitis in a 72 year old who was initially thought to have psuedodementia or catatonia due to variable collateral who later on LP was found to have markers and responded to steroid treatment. This case highlights the importance of maintaining a broad differential with patients who present with psychiatric alterations and to consider other causes of behavioral change.

Miller Fisher Variant Of Guillain- Barré Syndrome, Peter Killian, Kishan B. Patel

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

We present a case of a man in his 50s who was evaluated in the emergency department for right facial droop, myalgias, and right lower extremity weakness. The patient required multiple interdisciplinary specialists for treatment and diagnosis of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). The differential for weakness and facial droop is primarily aimed at ruling out an irreversible neurological cause while investigating a potential infectious etiology. Multiple variants of GBS exist and clinical presentations can vary, including the Miller Fisher Variant. This variant features a unique presentation, affecting the corticobulbar tract, evident with the ptosis commonly seen following a gastrointestinal infection.

Future Applications Of Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Ophthalmoscopy In Neuro-Ophthalmology, Neurology, And Neurodegenerative Conditions, Daniel M. Markowitz, Elizabeth Affel, György Hajnóczky, Robert C. Sergott Mar 2025

Future Applications Of Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Ophthalmoscopy In Neuro-Ophthalmology, Neurology, And Neurodegenerative Conditions, Daniel M. Markowitz, Elizabeth Affel, György Hajnóczky, Robert C. Sergott

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy (FLIO) has emerged as an innovative advancement in retinal imaging, with the potential to provide in vivo non-invasive insights into the mitochondrial metabolism of the retina. Traditional retinal imaging, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus autofluorescence (FAF) intensity imaging, focus solely on structural changes to the retina. In contrast, FLIO provides data that may reflect retinal fluorophore activity, some of which may indicate mitochondrial metabolism. This review builds upon the existing literature to describe the principles of FLIO and established uses in retinal diseases while introducing the potential for FLIO in neurodegenerative conditions.
