A Ticking Time Bomb: An Overview Of A Case Report Of Neutropenic Fever Secondary To Tick-Borne Illness, Yasemin Galiboglu, Danielle Thor, Joann Ha, Kristine Wong, Cindy Hou

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

The advent of immunomodulatory therapies and their ever-expanding number of treatment indications necessitates the understanding of their associated complications. Neutropenic fever serves as an example of these complications often encountered in clinical practice. Although neutropenic fever can result from virtually any pathogen, episodes of the syndrome secondary to tick-borne illness remain relatively undocumented in the scientific literature. In the case presented, a 77-year-old female with a pertinent past medical history of smoldering IgG multiple myeloma on active immunosuppressive therapy presented with a first-time episode of neutropenic fever likely secondary to tick-borne illness. Through this overview of a broader report, attention …

Side Effect Profiles In Immunotherapy Vs Chemotherapy In The Treatment Of Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Chloe Triolo, Mariana Sales, Amy Nguyen, Jaclyn Schultz, Melissa Crisci

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Background: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common cancer in children and also one of the most curable, with current cure rates surpassing 90%. Immunotherapy using biologics is an emerging cancer treatment approach that shows significant promise and is generally less toxic than traditional chemotherapy. Due to its lower toxicity compared to chemotherapy, standalone immunotherapy may represent a promising treatment option for pediatric ALL patients.

Hypothesis: This review aims to compare acute side effect profiles and chronic complications in chemotherapy versus immunotherapy treatment modalities for pediatric patients with ALL. Immunotherapy is hypothesized to have a more tolerable side effect …

Aims: Cancer care guidelines have been developed in many subspecialities, usually in advanced health systems. However, there are notable global disparities in healthcare access, which can impact sarcoma care. Unfortunately, there is a lack of global data on this subject. Our aim was to describe access to sarcoma care based on a comprehensive global survey among orthopaedic oncologists, and assess for global as well as regional differences.

Methods: A 25-question survey was emailed to the attendees of the 2024 Birmingham Orthopaedic Oncology Meeting and included questions about the respondents' training and practice, access to sarcoma centres, and specific items for …

Stopping The Cirrhosis: An International Review Of Hep C Screening In Prisons And Jails From 2004-2023, Anastasia Sahu Bs, Jack Spurlock Ba, Mhs, Eliza Beal Md

Medical Student Research Symposium

Background: As of 2023, HCV prevalence in state prisons in the United States was 9 times higher than the general population1. Without treatment, 20% of people with HCV will develop cirrhosis, and some estimate that 70% of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases arise from cirrhosis or advanced fibrosis2. Despite the high prevalence in prisons, the US does not have nationally standardized Hep C screening in correctional facilities. The goal of this study is to investigate different models of existing programs in prisons internationally. Understanding these models will inform Hep C screening in US prisons on a state …

Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences

Introduction Childhood cancer is a global health challenge, with over 275,000 cases annually among individuals under 19 years. Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy lead to significant oral complications, including mucositis, xerostomia, and infections, adversely affecting treatment adherence and quality of life. Effective oral care is essential for mitigating these complications, particularly in resource-limited settings like India.

Objectives This systematic review aims to identify, assess, and summarize global guidelines and protocols for oral care in pediatric cancer patients, focusing on the prevention and management of oral complications during treatment.

Methods The protocol adheres to PRISMA-P guidelines and is …

Background: Patients with prostate cancer undergoing radiation therapy (RT) need comfortably full bladders to reduce toxicities during treatment. Poor compliance is common with standard of care written or verbal instructions, leading to wasted patient value (PV) and clinic resources via poor throughput efficiency (TE).

Objective: Herein, we assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a smartphone-based behavioral intervention (SBI) to improve bladder-filling compliance and methods for quantifying PV and TE.

Methods: In total, 36 patients with prostate cancer were enrolled in a single-institution, closed-access, nonrandomized feasibility trial. The SBI consists of a fully automated smart water bottle and smartphone app. Both …

Bladder cancer (BLCA) mortality is higher in African American (AA) patients compared with European American (EA) patients, but the molecular mechanism underlying race-specific differences are unknown. To address this gap, we conducted comprehensive RNA-Seq, proteomics, and metabolomics analysis of BLCA tumors from AA and EA. Our findings reveal a distinct metabolic phenotype in AA BLCA characterized by elevated mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), particularly through the activation of complex I. The results provide insight into the complex I activation-driven higher OXPHOS activity resulting in glutamine-mediated metabolic rewiring and increased disease progression, which was also confirmed by [U]13C-glutamine tracing. Mechanistic studies further …

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Referrals In Cancer Patients, Bhumik Patel, Venkateswar Venkataraman, Deanna Janora, Jack Goldberg

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) can address functional limitations in various conditions, including cancer. Cancer rehabilitation aims to address functional impairments resulting from both the disease itself and its treatments, striving to optimize physical, social, psychological, and vocational functioning. Existing literature indicates that PM&R services significantly benefit cancer patients by improving their overall quality of life. Studies have found that optimal utilization of PM&R services can increase the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) in cancer patients. Current National Comprehensive Cancer Network and American Cancer Society guidelines emphasize the importance of incorporating PM&R services into oncology care to enhance the function and …

Autistic adults are at higher risk of being diagnosed with co-occurring health conditions, and yet they are a vulnerable group for disparities in access and outcomes. One of the key barriers to better outcomes is poor patient-provider communication. This study the use of AASPIRE’s AHAT communication toolkit as a channel between healthcare workers and autistic adults to facilitate their appointments within the outpatient oncology department, as well as assessing healthcare providers’ knowledge and self-efficacy in caring for the patients. Sixteen healthcare providers (12 registered nurses and four patient care assistants) completed pre and post intervention surveys and utilized the AHAT …

BACKGROUND: Neck dissections (ND) are a routine procedure in head and neck oncology. Given the postoperative functional impact that some patients experience, it is imperative to identify and track quality of life (QoL) symptomatology to tailor each patient's therapeutic needs. To date, there is no validated French-Canadian questionnaire for this patient-population. We therefore sought to translate and validate the Neck Dissection Impairment Index (NDII) in Canadian French.

METHODS: A 3-phased approach was used. Phase 1: The NDII was translated from English to Canadian French using a "forward and backward" translational technique following international guidelines. Phase 2: A cognitive debriefing session …

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men. Androgen receptor (AR) signaling is essential for PCa cell growth/survival and remains a key therapeutic target for lethal castration-resistant PCa (CRPC). GATA2 is a pioneer transcription factor crucial for inducing AR expression/activation. We recently reported that MAPK4, an atypical MAPK, promotes tumor progression via noncanonical activation of AKT. Here, we demonstrated that MAPK4 activated AR by enhancing GATA2 transcriptional expression and stabilizing GATA2 protein through repression of GATA2 ubiquitination/degradation. MAPK4 expression correlated with AR activation in human CRPC. Concerted activation of both GATA2/AR and AKT by …

Use Of Small Molecule Fanconi Anemia Pathway Inhibitors As Sensitizing Agents To Laromustine., Sam W. Marchant Jan 2021

Use Of Small Molecule Fanconi Anemia Pathway Inhibitors As Sensitizing Agents To Laromustine., Sam W. Marchant

Honors Theses

Laromustine is an experimental chemotherapeutic sulfonyl hydrazine prodrug shown in clinical trials to be effective against acute myeloid leukemia. The mechanism of action of laromustine involves interstrand crosslinking, via chloroethylation, and enzyme inhibition, caused by carbamoylation. The work described herein aims to investigate whether inhibition of the replication-dependent interstrand crosslink repair Fanconi Anemia pathway further sensitizes cells to laromustine. By measuring metabolic activity immediately after drug exposure, we find laromustine to be equally as cytotoxic towards Fanconi Anemia deficient and wild type cells. However, through clonogenic assays we show Fanconi Anemia mutations sensitize cells to laromustine’s anti-proliferative effect. Furthermore, we …

Health Effects Of A Vegan Diet And Pediatric Cancer Prevention, Lindsay Wisehart

Senior Honors Theses

Veganism is a diet which excludes consumption of all animal products. With proper planning and vitamin supplementation to ensure adequate intake of protein, fat, calcium, zinc, iron, and vitamins D and B12, a vegan diet is widely accepted as suitable for growing and developing children. The decreased levels of dairy, red and processed meats, fat, and protein, and increased levels of fruits and vegetables characteristic of a vegan diet have been shown to reduce risk of mortality and a number of diseases including adult and childhood cancer. Childhood cancer is the second leading cause of childhood death in Western society. …

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Precision medicine is a term describing strategies to promote health and prevent and treat disease based on an individual’s genetic, molecular, and lifestyle characteristics. Oncology precision medicine (OPM) is a cancer treatment approach targeting cancer-specific genetic and molecular alterations. Implementation of an OPM clinical program optimally involves the support and collaboration of multiple departments, including administration, medical oncology, pathology, interventional radiology, genetics, research, and informatics. In this review, we briefly introduce the published evidence regarding OPM’s potential effect on patient outcomes and discuss what we have learned over the first year of operating an OPM program within an integrated health …

Characterization Of Murine Breast Cancer Cell Lines For Anti-Cancer Vaccine, Haven N. Frazier May 2017

Characterization Of Murine Breast Cancer Cell Lines For Anti-Cancer Vaccine, Haven N. Frazier

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States (1). While treatments involving radiation and chemotherapy currently exist, disease must be detected early in order for the treatments to be somewhat effective, and there is no effective treatment after metastasis occurs (2). Additionally, current therapies do not mitigate tumor immunosuppression. Decreasing the tumor-associated immunosuppressive conditions while activating antitumor immunity could prevent recurrence and metastasis, possibly leading to an effective treatment for cancer (3). Tumor cell vaccines could possibly address this issue and have become a …

Mutations In Braf Are Associated With Higher Levels Of Immune Infiltrates In Microsatellite-Stable Colon Cancer, Jake Rubin, Eduard Porta Parto Apr 2017

Mutations In Braf Are Associated With Higher Levels Of Immune Infiltrates In Microsatellite-Stable Colon Cancer, Jake Rubin, Eduard Porta Parto

GW Research Days 2016 - 2020

While BRAF is among the most well-established oncogenes in human cancers, more recently it has garnered attention for its role in suppressing antitumor immunity, especially in melanoma. Because tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) density is strongly prognostic in colorectal cancer (CRC)7, we decided to investigate the connection between TIL density and the BRAF-activating V600E mutation in CRC.

We used ESTIMATE to quantify immune infiltrate in samples from the TCGA colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) dataset (n = 216). This is an algorithm that uses the gene-expression signature of 141 immune-related genes to infer the presence of immune cells in the tumor infiltrate. …

Elevated Mtss1 Expression Associated With Metastasis And Poor Prognosis Of Residual Hepatitis B-Related Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Xiu-Yan Huang, Zi-Li Huang, Bin Xu, Zi Chen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Hepatectomy generally offers the best chance of long-term survival for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Many studies have shown that hepatectomy accelerates tumor metastasis, but the mechanism remains unclear.

Methods: An orthotopic nude mice model with palliative HCC hepatectomy was performed in this study. Metastasis-related genes in tumor following resection were screened; HCC invasion, metastasis, and some molecular alterations were examined in vivo and in vitro. Clinical significance of key gene mRNA expression was also analyzed.

USP18 (ubiquitin-specific protease 18) removes ubiquitin-like modifier interferon stimulated gene 15 (ISG15) from conjugated proteins. USP18 null mice in a FVB/N background develop tumors as early as 2 months of age. These tumors are leiomyosarcomas and thus represent a new murine model for this disease.
