An In-Depth Review Of Retinitis Pigmentosa Development And Pathologies Overtime In Patients, Abdul Harris
An In-Depth Review Of Retinitis Pigmentosa Development And Pathologies Overtime In Patients, Abdul Harris
Honors College Theses
Retinitis Pigmentosa is a disease which can cause blindness and affects around 2.5 million people worldwide. It is a disorder that has a multitude of ways of being inherited, such as autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive as well as X-linked and mitochondrial linked disorder. While some versions of RP may be syndromic (20%-30%), a majority of cases are in fact non-syndromic. The majority of non-syndromic cases inherited via autosomal dominant RP having RHO gene mutations, and X-linked means of inheritance having majority of patients with RPGR gene mutations. Ushers Syndrome, a syndromic version of retinitis pigmentosa and autosomal recessive RP having …

Graft Versus Host Disease-Associated Dry Eye: Role Of Ocular Surface Mucins And The Effect Of Rebamipide, A Mucin Secretagogue, Kiumars Shamloo, Ashley Barbarino, Saleh Alfuraih, Ajay Sharma
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
PURPOSE. The present study was designed to investigate the role of ocular surface glycocalyx and mucins in graft versus host disease (GVHD)-associated dry eye. The ameliorative effect of topical rebamipide, a mucin secretagogue, on GVHD-associated dry eye was also tested.
METHODS. A mouse model of allogeneic transplantation was used to induce ocular GVHD with C57BL/6 as donors and B6D2F1 as recipient mice. Phenol red thread method and fluorescein staining was used to quantify tear secretion and corneal keratopathy. At 8 weeks after the allogeneic transplantation, corneas were harvested to perform glycocalyx staining and confocal microscopy. Goblet cell staining was performed …
Observing Growth Effects Of Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor On Human Retinal Pericytes In Vitro, Anjalee Choudhury, Andrew Tsin, Zachary Perez, Fransisco Elisarraras
Observing Growth Effects Of Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor On Human Retinal Pericytes In Vitro, Anjalee Choudhury, Andrew Tsin, Zachary Perez, Fransisco Elisarraras
School of Medicine Publications
The purpose of this study is to investigate and determine the role of PEDF in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy as induced by advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). Human retinal pericytes were isolated from donors and will be measured for cell proliferation under the influence of PEDF both in the presence and absence of AGEs. Expected outcomes involve both the maintenance and increased survival of HRPs after treatment with PEDF under stimulated hyperglycemic conditions.
For Your Eyes Only, Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus Case Study, Alexander Fishman, Jared Ward, Richard Pescatore
For Your Eyes Only, Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus Case Study, Alexander Fishman, Jared Ward, Richard Pescatore
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus is a reactivation of a latent Varicella Zoster Virus that specifically involves the eye. The reactivation often occurs during immunocompromised states which allows latent virus in the dorsal root ganglia of sensory nerves to begin viral replication an d s pread via peripheral axons. Diagnosis is based on two characteristic findings; herpetic lesions on the eyelids, forehead, or elsewhere within the V1 dermatome, and ocular findings. Symptoms can vary but are often quite painful. Some patients experience a prodrome of tingling sensation prior to the appearance of a zoster dermatitis . HZO can also present initially as …
Seeing Eye To Eye: A Machine Learning Approach To Automated Saccade Analysis, Maigh Attre
Seeing Eye To Eye: A Machine Learning Approach To Automated Saccade Analysis, Maigh Attre
Honors Scholar Theses
Abnormal ocular motility is a common manifestation of many underlying pathologies particularly those that are neurological. Dynamics of saccades, when the eye rapidly changes its point of fixation, have been characterized for many neurological disorders including concussions, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and Parkinson’s disease. However, widespread saccade analysis for diagnostic and research purposes requires the recognition of certain eye movement parameters. Key information such as velocity and duration must be determined from data based on a wide set of patients’ characteristics that may range in eye shapes and iris, hair and skin pigmentation [36]. Previous work on saccade analysis has …
Characterization Of Extracellular Vesicles From Human Diabetic Retinopathy Retinal Tissue In Vitro And From Urine Of Human Patients With Diabetic Retinopathy, Jason Mighty
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a neurovascular complication associated with diabetes mellitus that affects approximately 120 million people worldwide and its prevalence is expected to reach 190 million by 2030. DR diagnosis is accomplished with fundus ophthalmoscopy often when retinal damage and vision loss have already occurred. A group of biomarker being explored for early detection of diseases are extracellular vesicles (EVs), which are nanometer diameter lipid enclosed vesicles, released from all cell types and containing genetic cargo reflective of releasing cell state. EV biomarkers are currently being explored to help monitor disease predisposition, pathogenesis and response to treatment. While an …
The Proliferation Of Porcine Retinal Ganglion Cells Using Pnu 282987, Rebecca Karl, David Linn
The Proliferation Of Porcine Retinal Ganglion Cells Using Pnu 282987, Rebecca Karl, David Linn
Honors Projects
The retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) from porcine eyes were extracted to work towards a potential therapy for glaucoma. There is not a known cause of glaucoma or the apoptosis of RGCs that cause the eventual blindness associated with glaucoma. The goal of this protocol is to protect the RGCs from dying by adding a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor activator to induce neuronal proliferation and protect against glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. PNU 282987 was used as the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor activator due to its neuroprotective properties. We hypothesized that we would observe the proliferation of RGCs (associated with increased cell numbers) with varying levels …

Purpose
The Myopia Outcome Study of Atropine in Children (MOSAIC) aims to explore the efficacy, safety, acceptability and mechanisms of action of 0.01% atropine for myopia control in a European population.
Methods
MOSAIC is an investigator-led, double-masked, placebo-controlled, randomised clinical trial investigating the efficacy, safety and mechanisms of action of 0.01% atropine eyedrops in myopic progression management. During phase 1 of the trial, 250 children aged 6-16 years with progressive myopia apply eye drops once nightly in both eyes from randomisation to month 24. No treatment is given during phase 2 from month 24 to 36 (washout period) for those …
