Introduction

Mobility enables man to interact with his surroundings, and to influence his environment as well as to be influenced by it. The need for the blind individual to relate himself to his environment has been the motivation for the development of orientation and mobility instruction.

While orientation and mobility for the blind is a relatively new discipline, the systemic use of basic techniques, i.e. hand-and-arm techniques and the use of long, light, functional cane as a mode of travel, has been validated empirically with more than a thousand blinded adults.
