Stroke is defined as a sudden onset of neurologic deficit caused by interrupted blood flow. Stroke is divided into two subtypes: ischemic and hemorrhagic. Roughly 87% of all strokes are ischemic with infarcts caused by obstruction to carotid artery circulation or vertebrobasilar artery circulation. Symptoms of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke are similar on physical exam;therefore use of imaging is essential to determine treatment pathway.
