BACKGROUND: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Sjögren's syndrome (SS), but its risk factors remain unclear. Although SS affects both the upper and lower respiratory epithelium, it is unknown whether this occurs simultaneously or separately. In other autoimmune conditions-such as eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis and granulomatosis with polyangiitis-upper airway disease precedes lower lung involvement by months or even years. We hypothesized that chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), as an upper airway disease, may be a risk factor for ILD in SS.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most aggressive cancers characterized by highly invasive growth into the surrounding peripancreatic fat tissue, where tumor cells can directly interact with adipocytes. Due to poor response to the currently available (radio)chemotherapies, there is an urgent need for advanced therapy concepts. The present study shows that ADAMTS13 (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 13), a key factor in blood coagulation, is significantly overexpressed in human PDAC. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that ADAMTS13 expression is associated with prolonged survival and negatively correlated with vascular density. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is one of the most aggressive subtypes of breast cancer, with limited targeted treatment options and poor clinical outcomes. HER3 has recently emerged as a promising therapeutic target, with HER3-directed antibody–drug conjugates advancing to Phase III clinical trials for non-small cell lung cancer. However, the downstream molecular mechanisms by which HER3 promotes TNBC progression remain poorly defined. In this study, we uncovered a previously unrecognized HER3/miR-34b-5p/PHF8 signaling axis that drives TNBC cell proliferation and tumor growth. Binge drinking contributes to an increasing number of emergency department visits in the United States. Previous work demonstrated that an alcohol binge impairs cardiac performance and exerts complex hemodynamic effects through the activation of the endocannabinoid-mediated cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R) signaling pathway. Anandamide (AEA), an endogenous CB1R agonist, is synthesized in response to various stressors and tissue injury. However, the role of binge drinking in increasing myocardial AEA levels, which leads to CB1R-dependent cardiodepression, remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: Acute laryngeal injury (ALgI) is created as a result of endotracheal tube pressure ulcer formation leading to fibrosis and inflammation. This condition often leads to airway obstruction and voice and swallowing dysfunction. This study demonstrates a reliable animal model of ALgI to reproduce the acute wound process seen clinically, to explore the pathophysiology of this disease process, and to serve as a reproducible injury suitable for the evaluation of therapeutic interventions.

Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery

We report an unusual case of a woman who presented with nonspecific symptoms of unilateral facial mass and bleeding from her lower lip over several weeks. The mass was found to be relatively fixed and irregular with destruction of facial bone as evidenced by imaging. Initial investigations indicated the possibility of multiple myeloma, which was later confirmed with serum protein electrophoresis and bone marrow biopsy. Cervical lymph node biopsy confirmed presence of plasmacytoid cells positive for CD 20.

We present two interesting cases of left ventricular free wall rupture following ST elevation myocardial infarction. First case was not identified on echocardiography and angiography despite high suspicion and later underwent emergent lifesaving mediastinal exploration and repair. Second case had a delayed presentation of inferior STEMI and cardiac tamponade. These cases highlight the diagnostic challenges and variable presentations of left ventricular free wall rupture (LVFWR).

Abstract

Problem: The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection that affects more than 80% of the population within the United States (Eisenhauer et al., 2020). HPV can develop into cervical, anogenital, and oropharyngeal cancers (Eisenhauer et al., 2020). About 4,000 individuals die from cervical cancer alone each year (O’Leary, 2022). The HPV vaccine, though recommended by the ACIP and AAP, is below national vaccination rates in comparison to other vaccines (O’Leary, 2022).

BACKGROUND: With growing evidence pointing towards the potential of integrative oncology modalities (IOM) in addressing cancer and cancer-treatment related symptoms, research on IOM utilization and implementation is warranted. This study examines global stakeholder perspectives on integrative oncology (IO) utilization for supportive cancer care.

METHODS: Members of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) and the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) completed a survey on the utilization of IOM for supportive cancer care. Descriptive statistics were used to assess demographic data, IOM usage patterns, IOM education, and financial considerations for utilizing IOM.

IMPORTANCE: The prevalence of depression is higher in cancer survivors than in the general population. As the long-term cancer survivor population increases, it is increasingly important to understand risk factors for late-onset depression.

OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors associated with late-onset depression in long-term (5-year) survivors of breast, prostate, or colorectal cancer.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and alcohol-associated liver disease frequently co-occur, manifesting as MetALD. Understanding the hepatocyte-specific effects of alcohol and metabolic stressors is critical to uncovering mechanisms of synergistic injury. This study evaluated the individual and combined effects of ethanol, sugars, and saturated/monounsaturated fats on hepatocyte lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial function using a 3D human HepaRG spheroid model. PURPOSE: Targeted therapies for metastatic prostate cancer are limited, highlighting the need for novel drug targets and mechanisms of action (MoA). Human kallikrein 2 (KLK2) is a prostate-specific antigen expressed across the prostate cancer disease continuum. However, it was not recognized as a therapeutic target for prostate cancer in the past due to limited evidence of its cell surface expression. In this study, we systematically characterized KLK2 expression in prostate cancer, confirmed its cell surface expression, and demonstrated the preclinical efficacy of three KLK2-targeting therapeutics with distinct MoA.

PURPOSE: Leiomyomas are benign smooth muscle tumors that commonly present in the uterus, soft tissue, skin, and gastrointestinal tract but in rare cases can also arise within the eye. Notably, intraocular leiomyomas often show slightly different histopathologic and immunohistochemical features, referred to as mesectodermal morphology, given their presumed neural crest origin. Genetic and cytogenetic alterations of intraocular leiomyomas, as well as their association with various clinical and histopathologic features, have not been previously studied.
