Group A streptococci (GAS) are serious human pathogens that can cause a wide array of diseases ranging from pharyngitis to streptococcal toxic shock (STSS), which is caused by excessive cytokines responses triggered by streptococcal superantigens (Strep SAgs). SAgs interact simultaneously with HLA class II molecules on antigen presenting cells (APC) and with the T cell receptor beta chain variable elements (TCR V) and cause excessive stimulation of both cell types and massive release of inflammatory mediators.

This descriptive correlation study had four purposes: describe depressive and anxiety symptom levels in pregnant and non-pregnant African American (AA) HIV-positive women, examine the association between underlying vulnerabilities and depressive symptoms in HIV-positive AA women, determine the association between underlying vulnerabilities and anxiety symptoms in AA HIV-positive women, and determine the predictors of depressive and anxiety symptoms among African American HIV-positive women. A convenience sample of 80 African American HIV-positive women was recruited from university-based obstetrics/-gynecology and infectious disease practices in a large metropolitan city in the Mid-South. Parents often report that their child diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and receiving steroid therapy experience altered sleep patterns, fatigue, irritability, and other behavioral changes. As a consequence, parents may experience altered sleep, fatigue, and increased caregiver burden. If so, the differences seen in parental sleep efficiency and sleep duration may be attributed to the child experiencing altered sleep secondary to receiving dexamethasone. Pediatric adrenocortical cancer is extremely rare and often fatal (approximately 0.3-0.4 cases per million worldwide; 50% 5-year survival). The incidence of pediatric adrenocortical cancer in southern Brazil is 10-15 times higher than the worldwide incidence. Due to the rarity of adrenocortical cancer, especially in children, underlying gene dysregulation and mechanisms of tumorigenesis of the adrenal gland are very poorly described in the literature. The hypothesis of this project is that a functionally relevant association exists between CFTR and Hsp90. In testing this hypothesis, (a) the association of CFTR and Hsp90 is confirmed via crosslinking and immunoprecipitation of CFTR from stably transfected HEK-293 cells, electrophoretic separation of cross-linked proteins, and protein identification via SDS-PAGE, western blotting, and mass spectrometry. Also, this hypothesis is tested by (b) functionally assessing the effect of Hsp90 on CFTR function via Ussing chamber analysis, two-electrode voltage clamp analysis, preliminary in vivoanimal studies, and protein phosphorylation. The role of autoreactive, antigen-specific T-cells in the development of autoimmunity has long been documented. T-cells expressing chimeric receptors are specifically redirected against such cells and have been proven to suppress autoimmune encephalomyelitis, the murine model of multiple sclerosis. We here demonstrate the ability of humanized chimeric receptors to suppress experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in a humanized mouse model by redirecting T lymphocytes against autoreactive T-cells. High-risk neuroblastoma presents a significant therapeutic challenge because the 5-year survival rate remains less than 30% despite the use of surgery, multi-agent chemotherapy, radiation, and autologous bone marrow transplant. Novel therapeutic modalities are under development. The camptothecin analogs topotecan and irinotecan have been identified as successful cytotoxic agents. For topotecan, pharmacokinetically guided dosing to achieve a systemic exposure associated with preclinical anti-tumor activity in neuroblastoma xenograft models is feasible and has elicited favorable responses in children with high-risk neuroblastoma. However, some children with high-risk disease did not respond to the putatively effective topotecan systemic exposure. These children represent a subset …

Although the majority of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery patients are extubated within 6 to 8 hours following surgery, 20% to 40% of patients remain intubated 12 hours after surgery due to dysfunctional ventilator weaning response (DVWR). DVWR associated with increased morbidity and mortality (30% to 43%) following CABG surgery. Finding significant antecedence to predict DVWR could help to identify and prevent the complications from DVWR after CABG surgery. Literature review revealed that there is an association between cardiopulmonary indicators (CPI) and DVWR after CABG surgery. This descriptive, correlational study investigated the associations among gastric myoelectrical activity (GMA), upper gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, and glucose control. The study also attempted to determine whether any relationship existed between upper GI symptoms, glucose control, age, or length of diagnosis and pattern of GMA identified using electrogastrography (EGG). A total of 25 persons participated in the study. The sample was comprised of 7 healthy controls, 5 patients diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and 13 patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The purpose of this study was to estimate the cost of illness of Parkinson’s disease in the United States. Direct medical expenditures, with the exception of nursing home costs, were estimated using data from the 1999-2003 Medical Expenditures Panel Survey Household Component (MEPS-HC). Nursing home costs were estimated using the Medical Expenditures Panel Survey Nursing Home Component (MEPS-NHC). Indirect costs for lost productivity due to missed work or bed-days (morbidity) were estimated using the MEPS-HC and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Indirect costs for lost productivity due to death (mortality) were estimated using the National Vital Statistics System.

The study first described depressive and anxiety symptom levels, prevalence of hazardous drinking, rewards, and subjective burden reported by family caregivers of patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). Second, the investigator compared depressive and anxiety symptom levels, prevalence of hazardous drinking, rewards, and subjective burden reported by African Americans family caregivers with those reported by Caucasian family caregivers of patients with CLD. The third purpose was to determine the predictors of subjective burden and mental health status of family caregivers of persons with CLD.

Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a life-threatening disease primarily affecting children. Treatment currently consists of chemotherapy sometimes in combination with head irradiation. The literature documents the damage of treatment to the teeth (e.g., congenital absence, microdontia, abnormal crown- root ratios). The present study assessed the effects of treatment for ALL on the tempos of dental maturation (i.e., dental age) in a mixed longitudinal sample of 72 children treated for ALL at St Jude's Children's' Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is the most common malignancy of childhood, constituting 31 percent of all childhood malignancies. Treatment strategies to target ALL include chemotherapeutic agents, irradiation of the neck and/or spine, and bone marrow transplantation. The aggressive nature of antineoplastic therapies often produces numerous craniofacial and dental sequelae as well as additional harmful effects to the entire body. Cranial irradiation may adversely affect the hypothalamic-pituitary axis decreasing growth hormone production. Consequently, children with ALL may experience a transient or permanent reduction in growth iatrogenically. New technologies to detect dysautonomia, such as 24-hr heart rate variability, are being evaluated and compared to traditional evoked tests. These advances have, however, lead to a lack of standardization in testing batteries, procedures, and reporting formats. Cumulative trauma disorders are musculoskeletal problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff tendinitis, and epicondylitis which can affect assembly line workers. The injuries are thought to result from repetitive motions performed under excessive loads in anomalous postures. The project aimed to design, build, install, and evaluate worksite accommodation at the Saturn plant for a worker with right lateral epicondylitis. The goal was to make her fully functional in her original team which required addressing the injurious aspects of the task that caused or aggravated her injury.
