It has been a long haul since March, but we now know how critical it is not to socialize in groups—big or small—especially without masks and social distancing. The Pioneer Promise will continue to be a critical tool—one we hope you have been using while at home. That said, we can now look down the road and see a light as more and more people receive the vaccine. Now is not the time to let down our guard. The vaccine is here, but the virus also is more prevalent everywhere than at any other time.

The country is currently experiencing increases in COVID-19 cases in most states, including a new strain that seems to spread even more easily than the previous one. Because of that, we have strengthened our protocols regarding quarantining and testing for the beginning of the semester. We are doing that to maximize our chances of starting the semester healthy until the arrival of warmer weather and the increased availability of the vaccine.

Of the 1575 participants of the CCSVI-Tracking Survey, 475 patients recorded their quality of life and EDSS outcomes for at least 2 months. Self-reported use of complementary and conventional therapies included diet, use of drug therapy, symptoms, quality of life, and mobility. Analysis included comparing outcomes related to different diets within and between groups. Adherence to the MS diet was not associated with a greater quality of life, less disability, a lower Symptom Score, or faster walking speed compared to other diets. Since we communicated with you yesterday, we have a total of 34 new positive COVID-19 cases—25 on campus and nine off campus. We are also still receiving results from this week’s random asymptomatic testing. Because of this continued spike, we are moving our alert status to red. This decision was made after careful deliberations and discussion with state and local health officials about how best to contain the virus.

Our ramped-up random testing of asymptomatic students went well this week, and we are processing the results. We tested more than 1,200 students and some faculty and staff. Next week, we begin saliva testing and will test even more community members. The testing method, called SalivaDirect, was developed by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health. It was granted an emergency use authorization by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and has been used to test asymptomatic players and staff in the NBA. We are one of the first education institutions to use this test—if not the very first.
