Introduction: May-Thurner Syndrome (MTS) is a phenomenon commonly described as acquired stenosis of the left common iliac vein secondary to compression by the right common iliac artery. Right sided MTS is a rare syndrome that can happen due to a left sided inferior vena cava (IVC) and abdominal aorta with a high bifurcation which results in the right common iliac vein being compressed by the left internal iliac artery. It is a rare presentation of this condition which can commonly be missed and management guidelines are less defined compared to classic MTS. Case Report: A 63-year- old female with past …

Pectus excavatum (PE), characterized by an inward depression of the sternum, is the most common congenital chest wall abnormality. It has been rarely linked to cardiac abnormalities, such as arrhythmias and sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). In addition, emerging research suggests that vaping is a cardiovascular risk factor that has the potential to destabilize cardiac rhythm and promote arrhythmias. There is a lack of FDA oversight and long-term research on the effects of vaping. Rabbit antithymocyte globulin (rATG) is widely used for induction and treatment of acute T-cell mediated rejection in renal transplant patients. Bradycardia is reported as a rare side effect of this medication (citation). With the increasing number of transplanted kidneys in today's world, there is greater need to understand the adverse effects of these drugs in transplant recipients.. Here we report a case of symptomatic bradycardia in a renal transplant patient receiving rATG for acute T-cell mediated rejection.

Cost-Effective Hierarchical Cobalt Nanostructured Laser-Induced Graphene For Enhanced Uric Acid Detection, Anju Joshi, Gymama Slaughter

This study presents an innovative, cost-effective strategy to develop a flexible, enzyme-free biosensor for the sensitive detection of uric acid (UA). Utilizing electrochemically modified cobalt nanostructured on laser-induced graphene electrodes (CoNCs/LIG), this approach surpasses traditional noble metal-based electrocatalysts in sensitivity and affordability. The one-step electrochemical modification method is efficient and straightforward, enabling the uniform deposition of hierarchical flower-like cobalt nanostructures. These structures synergistically enhance the performance of the LIG, resulting in a broad detection range of 5 to 700 µM with a sensitivity of 6.75 µA µM-¹ cm-² and a low detection limit of 3.66 µM for UA. …

Flow-mediated dilation (FMD), a noninvasive measure of endothelial function, is commonly measured in the popliteal artery in the supine and upright body positions. However, reliability studies of the measurement in these positions are not well studied. This study aimed to examine the trial-retrial and visit-to-visit reliability of popliteal artery FMD in the seated position. Popliteal artery FMD was measured in 20 healthy adults across two visits in the seated and prone positions to assess visit-to-visit reliability. Cardiovascular disease or CVD refers to a multitude of conditions that affect both the heart and blood vessels. Being the leading cause of death in the United States, heart disease claims 919,032 lives; the risk of death becomes more likely when accompanied with comorbidities like diabetes (CDC, 2024). While heart disease is a leading cause of death across all populations, it accounts for a larger proportion of deaths in African American, or AA, adults at 22.6% compared to White adults at 18.0% and Hispanic adults at 11.9%, highlighting persistent racial disparities in cardiovascular outcomes (CDC, 2024). Advance Care Planning (ACP) is a critical component of patient-centered care, yet its utilization remains disproportionately low among Non-White populations in the United States, particularly among individuals with chronic illnesses such as heart disease and cancer. This article explores racial disparities in ACP engagement using secondary analysis of the 2018 and 2020 waves data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), guided by Bandura’s self-efficacy theory (SET). Heart failure has diverse underlying etiologies, complicating research. While some types, like ischemic disease or inherited mutations, are well-studied, research on rarer forms has lagged. Understanding the molecular drivers in these populations may enhance diagnostics and therapies. This work examines two rare groups: patients with ATTR cardiac amyloidosis and those receiving mechanical assist device support. We show that myocardium from patients with amyloidosis has increased fibrosis and reduced force production without changes in cross-bridge kinetics. Additionally, we show that the passive stiffness of amyloidosis myocardium is not different from non-failing myocardium, indicating increased ventricular wall thickness may cause restrictive filling. …

Heart failure (HF) exhibits considerable heterogeneity, posing significant challenges for research involving human cohorts. Diastolic dysfunction is a common pathophysiological feature; however, its molecular mechanisms remain incompletely elucidated. Sarcomeric proteins are integral to cardiac contraction and relaxation. Nonetheless, the phosphoproteome and the structural remodeling effects of these proteins on diastolic function within the context of HF have not been comprehensively characterized. This study examined sarcomeric modifications in diastolic dysfunction in human HF, focusing on Dilated and Ischemic HF, with non-failing donor hearts as controls. Analyzing myocardial samples from ~150 patients using electrophoretic and biochemical techniques, it found significant titin remodeling …
