Improving Nutrition Literacy In Primary Care, Kami D. Dykes Jan 2022

Improving Nutrition Literacy In Primary Care, Kami D. Dykes

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

By the year 2030, nearly one in every two adults will have obesity (Body Mass Index [BMI] ≥30 kg/m2.), and one in four adults will have severe obesity (BMI ≥35 kg/m2) (Ward et al., 2019). Equally troubling is that obesity poses a threat to the health of individuals, decreases the quality of life, shortens life expectancy, causes and worsens comorbidities, and increases all- cause mortality (Abdelaal et al., 2017). Studies have shown a link between BMI, nutritional knowledge, and dietary practices. Nutrition literacy is a newer term that refers to the complex relationship between nutrition …

Conference Papers

Older adults (≥65 years) are the fastest growing population group. Thus, ensuring nutritional well-being of the ‘over-65s’ to optimise health is critically important. Older adults represent a diverse population – some are fit and healthy, others are frail and many live with chronic conditions. Up to 78% of older Irish adults living independently are overweight or obese. The present paper describes how these issues were accommodated into the development of food-based dietary guidelines for older adults living independently in Ireland. Food-based dietary guidelines previously established for the general adult population served as the basis for developing more specific recommendations appropriate …

Maximal Strength Training Increases Metabolic Energy Expenditure In Sedentary Adults Classified As Obese, Robert E. Anderson Iii Jan 2022

Maximal Strength Training Increases Metabolic Energy Expenditure In Sedentary Adults Classified As Obese, Robert E. Anderson Iii

Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems

Background: Metabolic adaptations reduce resting and non-resting energy expenditure to account for approximately 120 kcal/day. Weight loss promotes greater skeletal muscle efficiency, reducing the energy cost of physical activity and is correlated with declines in skeletal muscle glucose oxidation. Maximal Strength Training (MST) has the potential to upregulate glucose utilization and may offset these metabolic adaptations. Objective: To determine if MST offsets markers of metabolic adaptation by increasing resting and non-resting energy expenditure in sedentary individuals classified as obese. Methods: Five (5) participants (2 females, 3 males), ages 18-35 years, with obesity (BMI 30–45 kg/m2) were enrolled in an 8-week …

Efficacy Of Prebiotic Dietary Intervention To Mitigate Risks For Dementia Via The Gut-Brain Axis, Lucille M. Yanckello Jan 2022

Efficacy Of Prebiotic Dietary Intervention To Mitigate Risks For Dementia Via The Gut-Brain Axis, Lucille M. Yanckello

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia with various risk factors including age, environmental factors such as brain injury and genetic factors, such as the E4 allele of the Apolipoprotein gene. Presence of the APOE4 allele increases AD risk by two- to four- fold. Recent studies have shown that mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), even without loss of consciousness, increases risk of dementia diagnosis by more than two-fold in military personnel and is also a significant environmental risk factor for developing dementia in the general population. The gut-brain axis (GBA) or bi-directional communication between the brain and …

Dcn Dissertation Proposal: The Impact Of A Pediatric Interdisciplinary Outpatient Feeding Clinic On Preterm Infant Weight Gain And Caregiver Compliance With Feeding Recommendations, Doretta Leung

Dean's Leadership Council Library Research Prize

Early nutrition intervention along with interdisciplinary care is important for premature infants because malnutrition often leads to poor growth in this population.1,2 Poor growth in preterm infants results in subsequent neurocognitive development as there is an association between deficient postnatal growth and poor neurologic outcome up to age 19.1,2 It is important to focus on an infant’s nutrition, feeding, and any gastroenterology concerns after hospital discharge to prevent poor growth. Most importantly, it is essential to have an interdisciplinary care monitoring infant care and outcomes in an outpatient setting; however, this service is lacking in Northeast Florida. The newly developed …

Family And Consumer Sciences Extension Agents Perception Of A Sustainable Eating Curriculum For Kentuckians, Lindley Barker Jan 2022

Family And Consumer Sciences Extension Agents Perception Of A Sustainable Eating Curriculum For Kentuckians, Lindley Barker

Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems

The population is rapidly increasing all over the world. As foods are produced for us to consume, the food system generates negative environmental impacts at each step. The extent of damage generated by food production depends on the amount of land, water, and energy depleted. These environmental impacts can result in reduced quantities of food produced, damages to the land and water used to grow/produce food, pollution of food, and food waste. All of which impact the amount of product produced. Thereby, shifting food-related behaviors of consumers toward sustainable eating may be a way to promote the health of people …

Attentional Bias, Inhibitory Control, And Food Reinforcement As Mechanisms Promoting Eating Behavior After Exercise, Kylie F. L. Mcfee Jan 2022

Attentional Bias, Inhibitory Control, And Food Reinforcement As Mechanisms Promoting Eating Behavior After Exercise, Kylie F. L. Mcfee

Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems

Background: Excess weight and obesity are serious health conditions characterized by modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors. Exercise is a common method for achieving weight loss; however, results are not always achieved due to post-exercise compensatory behaviors. Increased energy intake (EI) is thought to be the main compensatory behavior hindering weight loss among overweight and obese adults. It is important to determine and understand the mechanisms behind energy compensation following exercise, as this will allow for the discovery of future interventions that may provide individuals with ways to improve exercise as a weight loss treatment.

Objective: To determine if a single …

Development Of A Food Composition Database For Assessing Nitrate And Nitrite Intake From Animal-Based Foods, Liezhou Zhong, Alex H. Liu, Lauren C. Blekkenhorst, Nicola P. Bondonno, Marc Sim, Richard J. Woodman, Kevin D. Croft, Joshua R. Lewis, Jonathan M. Hodgson, Catherine P. Bondonno Jan 2022

Development Of A Food Composition Database For Assessing Nitrate And Nitrite Intake From Animal-Based Foods, Liezhou Zhong, Alex H. Liu, Lauren C. Blekkenhorst, Nicola P. Bondonno, Marc Sim, Richard J. Woodman, Kevin D. Croft, Joshua R. Lewis, Jonathan M. Hodgson, Catherine P. Bondonno

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Scope:

Nitrate and nitrite are approved food additives in some animal-based food products. However, nitrate and nitrite in foods are strictly regulated due to health concerns over methaemoglobinaemia and the potential formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines. In contrast, plants (like leafy vegetables) naturally accumulate nitrate ions; a growing body of research reveals beneficial metabolic effects of nitrate via its endogenous conversion to nitric oxide. To refine the association of dietary nitrate and nitrite intake with health outcomes, reliable measures of nitrate and nitrite intake from dietary food records are required. While a vegetable nitrate content database has been developed, there is …

The Association Between Early Enteral Nutrition And Various Outcomes In Patients Undergoing Ecmo Therapy At Loma Linda University Medical Center, Torrey Mitsunga, Lauren Wheeler

Loma Linda University Research Reports

Introduction:

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy is a life-saving option for critically ill patients who require either pulmonary and hemodynamic support. ECMO has only been widely adapted for usage in adults over the last few years, and recently at higher rates due to Covid-19. Though ECMO has the potential to save lives, it presents many challenges related to feeding and nourishment of the patients. Currently, data is lacking on how enteral nutrition during ECMO affects outcomes such as the duration of hospitalization, ability to meet calorie and protein goals, and patient survival.

The Efficacy Of Probiotics On Overall Quality Of Life By Gender, Melissa Kalman, Kirsten Soderblom Jan 2022

The Efficacy Of Probiotics On Overall Quality Of Life By Gender, Melissa Kalman, Kirsten Soderblom

Loma Linda University Research Reports

Introduction:

In the 1950s, German scientist Werner Kollath coined the term probiotic, which is Latin for, “for life”. To be considered a probiotic, a product must consist of live microorganisms and provide health benefits to the host when ingested in sufficient amounts. The microorganisms in probiotics provide numerous health benefits through immunologic mechanisms. Recent research shows probiotics may provide benefits to those experiencing stress, including general anxiety and stressors, as well as improve human immunity and overall quality of life. There is a lack of research concerning probiotics and the differences in physiological responses comparing males and females.

Comparison Of Student Dietary Patterns In The School Of Allied Health Professions' Departments, Randy Song, Sonya Fargo, Jaime Scolastico Jan 2022

Comparison Of Student Dietary Patterns In The School Of Allied Health Professions' Departments, Randy Song, Sonya Fargo, Jaime Scolastico

Loma Linda University Research Reports

Introduction:

Dietary habits influence many risk factors for cardiometabolic health, including heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, which collectively pose substantial health and economic burdens. College students may struggle to get access to or understand how to prepare healthy foods. Students with more nutritional knowledge consume less unhealthful fats and cholesterol, but as independence increases, students are continuously challenged to make healthful food choices. Assessing dietary patterns can be complex and time consuming, though it is a worthwhile endeavor as it sheds light on diet quality and areas of excess and deficiency.

Intuitive Eating Behaviors Among A Sample Of Food Secure And Food Insecure College Students, Morgan Stocker, Christin Seher Phd, Rdn, Ld

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Intuitive Eating (IE) is a food mindset focusing on honoring hunger and fullness, while rejecting the diet mentality. Research demonstrates a clear link between IE and health outcomes across many populations, including college students. Despite a growing body of literature, we still know very little about what complexities food insecurity may present for individuals trying to adopt IE behaviors. This study builds off prior research to investigate IE behaviors in food insecure and food secure students through a Qualtrics survey utilizing the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Six-Item Short Form to determine food …

BACKGROUND: Kwashiorkor is a childhood syndrome of edematous malnutrition. Its precise nutritional precipitants remain uncertain despite nine decades of study. Remarkably, kwashiorkor's disturbances resemble the effects of experimental diets that are deficient in one-carbon nutrients. This similarity suggests that kwashiorkor may represent a nutritionally mediated syndrome of acute one-carbon metabolism dysfunction. Here we report findings from a cross-sectional exploration of serum one-carbon metabolites in Malawian children.

METHODS: Blood was collected from children aged 12-60 months before nutritional rehabilitation: kwashiorkor (N = 94), marasmic-kwashiorkor (N = 43) marasmus (N = 118), moderate acute malnutrition (N = 56) and controls (N = …

Background: Clinical reports show a positive correlation between phytosterol concentrations and severity of cholestatic liver disease markers in infants during long-term administration of parenteral lipid emulsions. Establishing a causal link between phytosterols and cholestasis has been complicated by confounding factors of lipid emulsion load, fatty acid composition, and vitamin E in many of these studies. The goal of this study is to determine whether altering the phytosterol concentration within a common soybean oil-based emulsion will alter the onset and severity of cholestasis in parenterally fed preterm piglets.

Methods: Preterm piglets were administered, for 21 days, either enteral nutrition (ENT) or …
