Should Predoctoral Dental Students Provide Dental Treatment For Their Own Children?, S.M. Hashim Nainar Bds, Mdsc

The best interest standard is a foundational ethical principle in pediatric ethics for making healthcare decisions for children. It positions a child’s interests as central in clinical decision-making, setting aside the historical notion that children are chattel or property under the unlimited authority of their parents. This paper explores ethical issues related to predoctoral dental students providing dental treatment to their own children, using a case vignette with a negative outcome. Through this scenario, this article explores the ethical issues surrounding dental students providing care to their own children.

Early childhood caries (ECC) is the most prevalent chronic childhood disease and, if untreated, can lead to significant long-term health and social consequences, posing a substantial healthcare burden (AAPD, 2023; ADA, 2023; USPSTF, 2021; WHO, 2022). This evidence-based practice (EBP) project aimed to implement a multi-modal intervention to reduce ECC risk factors, prevent new dental caries, and halt the progression of existing dental caries. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of decompression as a treatment approach for radicular cysts in five pediatric patients. Case report: 5 pediatric patients with five cystic lesions from 6 to 11 years old diagnosed with radicular cysts were treated by decompression. Clinical and radiograph data from pre- and post-surgery were collected and analyzed. Complete resolution of all cystic lesions and simultaneous eruption of impacted teeth within the cyst were managed. The mean follow-up time is 25.6 months, and no recurrences were observed. Tooth eruption is a pivotal milestone for children's growth and development. This process involves with the formation of the tooth root, the periodontal ligament (PDL) and the alveolar bone, as the tooth crown penetrates the bone and gingiva to enter the oral cavity. This review aims to outline current knowledge of the adverse dental effects of antiresorptive medications. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine a university-based dental electronic health records (EHR) database to identify sedation-related adverse events (AEs) and assess patients' behavioral outcomes during routine pediatric dental sedations (PDSs) in a dental school clinic.

Methods: A database was screened for patients younger than 18 years old who had received dental sedation in 2019. The qualifying EHRs were then accessed and sedations were reviewed for AEs, which were categorized using a 12-point classification system and the Tracking and Reporting Outcomes of Procedural Sedation Tool. Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to describe the oral health literacy (OHL) inventories that have been used among caregivers of preschool-aged children.

Methods: Four databases were searched (CINAHL, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source, PubMed), to identify peer-reviewed, full-text studies published in English on the oral health literacy among caregivers of preschool-aged children from 2010-2021. All studies were assessed for eligibility using PRISMA guidelines. Inclusion criteria were experimental, non-experimental, or mixed methods peer-reviewed studies, conducted in the United States. Background: The preschool oral healthcare programme (POHP) was introduced by the Ministry of Health in 1984 to provide oral healthcare to 5-6-year-old children in Malaysia. Due to some limitations, a new programme called the ‘Senyuman Indah Milik Semua’ Programme (SIMSP) was introduced with the aim to improvise the POHP. In the SIMSP, a triad of dental therapists (DTs), teachers, and parents was set up to promote children’s oral hygiene level, oral health behaviours (OHBs), and parents’ oral health literacy (OHL).
