Using Active Learning Techniques To Improve Oral Health Literacy Among Children In Vulnerable Populations., Sarah Maria Downes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the effectiveness of an active learning approach in improving oral health literacy and attitude about science among at-risk students in the age range of third to sixth grades. This is done by designing and implementing a novel Oral Health Outreach module and video. Active learning components include engaging PowerPoint, oral hygiene discussion and demonstration, and finally a biofilm simulation, which utilizes glow-in-the-dark paint, dentoform models, and black lights that allow students to visualize the importance of plaque removal. Student comprehension of oral health concepts increased by an average of 52.4% on post-tests (n=61, p

Preschool Children's Toothbrushing Behaviour And Association With Their Oral Health, Muhammad Khan Iqra
Preschool Children's Toothbrushing Behaviour And Association With Their Oral Health, Muhammad Khan Iqra
Student Works (2020-2029)
Toothbrushing is an important yet neglected behaviour that has affected oral health of preschool children (4-6 years). Factors like dietary habit, socioeconomic status and oral conditions also affect oral health of preschool children. Despite intervention efforts, recent investigations reported high prevalence of early childhood caries (ECC) and oral diseases among this age group across different populations. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the relationship between toothbrushing behaviour and oral health status of preschool children to prevent oral diseases, hence improve their oral health. The aim of the current study was to evaluate toothbrushing behaviour of preschool children, assess their oral …

The Effect And Feasibility Of The Sims Programme To Improve Preschool Children's Oral Hygiene Level And Related Behaviours: A Cluster Randomised Control Trial, Anwar Nurul Hayati
Student Works (2020-2029)
Background: The preschool oral healthcare programme (POHP) was introduced by the Ministry of Health in 1984 to provide oral healthcare to 5-6-year-old children in Malaysia. Due to some limitations, a new programme called the ‘Senyuman Indah Milik Semua’ Programme (SIMSP) was introduced with the aim to improvise the POHP. In the SIMSP, a triad of dental therapists (DTs), teachers, and parents was set up to promote children’s oral hygiene level, oral health behaviours (OHBs), and parents’ oral health literacy (OHL). The POHP only involved DTs. Objectives: The primary objective of the study was to assess the effect of SIMSP versus …

Parental perception and attitudes are important parameters in deciding the most suitable behavioral management technique for their children’s dental treatment. Objective: This study sought to evaluate parents’ perceptions, attitudes, and concern in using a papoose board (PB) on their child during dental treatment as a behavioral management technique in dentistry, as well as determine the sociodemographic factors associated with parents’ willingness to use the PB for their children’s dental care. Methods: One hundred parents from three locations with at least one healthy child aged between 4 and 7 years old were randomly identified. A self-made video (duration of 94 s) …

Consideration For Care For Your Patient With Cerebral Palsy, Katlin R. Cannon, Melissa Stowe, Brooke Ryan

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a common developmental neurological disorder affecting about 2-3 children out of 1,000. CP is the result of infant brain damage or abnormal development resulting in impaired muscle control, coordination, tone, reflex, posture, and balance. These patients are unable to control motor movements of their muscles of mastication and facial expression, causing excessive drooling, clenching, bruxism, and other oral health-related issues. This lack of motor control affects their ability to swallow and often limits these patients to a liquid diet. This can lead to vitamin deficiencies and result in further developmental problems. As an example, a deficiency …
