Overweight and dental caries among children is increasing in Asia. The association between anthropometric measurements and dental caries is inconclusive and not representing the Asian context. Aim: To assess the association between anthropometric measurements and caries among children in Asia by regions, sugar consumption per-capita, and SES of the countries. Methods: The review was registered with PROSPERO and conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Twenty-six databases were employed for searching the eligible studies from inception until Jun 2019. Two reviewers independently screen, select studies, perform data extraction, and risk bias assessment, with discrepancies resolved by discussion and reference to the third reviewers. …

Objective: This study aimed to assess the effect of passive tobacco smoking (PTS) through the comparison of the periodontal status and the C-reactive protein (CRP) and cotinine levels in the biologic fluids in children who are exposed and unexposed to PTS. Methods: A total of 148 participants, whom had smokers (PTS-exposed, n=82) and non-smokers (PTS-unexposed, n=66) in their families, respectively, were included in the study. Gingival index, plaque index, probing depth, and bleeding on probing were recorded. Moreover, saliva, urine, and gingival crevicular fluid samples were collected. Associations between rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease of the joints, and periodontitis (PD), a chronic inflammatory disease affecting tooth supporting tissues have been reported. Antimicrobial peptide cathelicidin LL-37 besides being antibacterial, is also involved in inflammatory process. It has been suggested as a possible mechanistic link for these diseases. This study aimed to investigate the subgingival microbial profile of RA subjects and its correlation with levels of salivary and serum LL-37. Using Active Learning Techniques To Improve Oral Health Literacy Among Children In Vulnerable Populations., Sarah Maria Downes

This thesis examines the effectiveness of an active learning approach in improving oral health literacy and attitude about science among at-risk students in the age range of third to sixth grades. This is done by designing and implementing a novel Oral Health Outreach module and video. Active learning components include engaging PowerPoint, oral hygiene discussion and demonstration, and finally a biofilm simulation, which utilizes glow-in-the-dark paint, dentoform models, and black lights that allow students to visualize the importance of plaque removal.
