Introduction: Sagittal root position (SRP) of maxillary incisors is an important factor in implant treatment planning. Kan et al defined four classes of SRP in an effort to aid implant placement treatment planning and these SRP classifications represent a novel approach to describing bone changes around the maxillary incisors. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the difference between Ricketts analysis measurements made on Sirona Orthophos XG Plus (Sirona Dental Systems, Charlotte,NC) lateral cephalograms, and DolphinTM generated perspective and orthogonal lateral cephalograms from CBCT (NewTom 5G; QR srl, Verona, Italy). Materials and Methods: A Sirona digital lateral cephalogram and DophinTM synthesized CBCT lateral cephalograms of a radiographic phantom in orthogonal and perspective projections were created. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to determine if MRI can be used to accurately measure tooth lengths. Methods: MRI tooth length measurements were compared with “actual tooth lengths” as measured on CBCT scans. Twenty three subjects received two scans (one CBCT and one MRI). Tooth length was measured and compared between the resultant images. Intraclass correlations were used for statistical analysis. Results: Tooth length measurements made on MRI scans showed moderate to almost perfect agreement with tooth length measurements made on CBCT scans. Higher levels of agreement were present in the maxillary arch compared to the mandibular arch. …

Introduction: This study was designed to evaluate, via tensile and bend testing, the mechanical properties of a newly-developed monocrystalline orthodontic archwire comprised of a blend of copper, aluminum, and nickel (CuAlNi). Methods: The sample was comprised of three shape memory alloys; CuAlNi, copper nickel titanium (CuNiTi), and nickel titanium (NiTi); from various orthodontic manufacturers in both 0.018” round and 0.019” x 0.025” rectangular dimensions. Introduction: The objective of this study was to determine if there was any significant difference in treatment time or results due to varying levels of attending doctor coverage in the Loma Linda University (LLU) graduate orthodontics clinic. Methods and Materials: The main study group of 191 subjects was split into high, medium and low coverage groups by primary attending doctor coverage and then by original attending doctor coverage. Given that patients often need records taken several times during treatment, an alternative should be found that does not involve ionizing radiation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exists as a possible alternative. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the precision of lateral cephalometric Ricketts analysis measurements from NewTom 5G CBCT (NewTom) synthesized lateral cephalograms with Sirona Orthophos XG Plus (Sirona) digital lateral cephalograms. Introduction: The objective of this study was to determine the anterior/posterior position of the mandible at which an orthodontist and oral surgeon would advise bilateral sagittal split osteotomy advancement or set back when evaluating adult female photos and silhouettes. Material & Methods: Fifty-one adult female profile photos and lateral cephalograms were collected. Subjects were selected who met three criteria: 1) ANB of 0-2, 2) balanced profile image, and 3) age greater than 18. The objective of this study was to quantitatively evaluate, via CBCT, the dental and osseous effects of patients who had completed comprehensive orthodontic treatment with rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in conjunction with Ricketts prescription brackets. Thirty consecutive patients (16 males, 14 females; mean age = 13.9  1.9 years) who required RME as part of their orthodontic treatment and had pre-RME (T1), post-RME (T2) and final orthodontic (T3) CBCT images were included in the study. Introduction: There exists good consensus in the literature supporting the notion that resting tongue posture is an important factor in dental arch development and maintenance as well as airway control. What has yet to be quantitatively measured is the duration of time that a subconscious, resting tongue posture is maintained and whether such posture differs among various craniofacial morphologies. Quantifiable measurements might allow for prediction of tongue-posture-related problems specific to certain facial types. Introduction: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans may be used to measure mesial-distal (MD) tooth width for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. Purpose: The objective of this study was to determine if MD tooth measurements from unsegemented CBCT scans in the axial, sagittal, and coronal planes or from a panoramic reconstruction correlate and agree with respective measurements made on study models. Material and Methods: Using stone models of 30 subjects, reference MD tooth measurements were made using digital calipers.
