The greatest reason for using an anesthetic is to reduce pain for the patient. If we can do an operation without pain we are doing a great beneficial service to humanity. Hippocrates says "Divinum est opus sedan dolarum," meaning Divine is the work to subdue pain. In some cases it is best not to give an anesthetic as in case of cavity preparation which is very near the pulp. The pulp may be permanently injured by ever instrumentation.
