Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the salivary flow and levels of major salivary ions of HIV-infected individuals. Methods: One hundred and two participants (18 - 74 years of age) were divided into two groups (51 HIV - infected patients and 51 controls) and had a saliva sample collected. Salivary flow rate was measured gravimetrically. Levels of salivary sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and phosphorus were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Results: The mean salivary flow of subjects with HIV infection was significantly higher when compared to controls (Case group = …

Saliva As A Diagnostic Tool To Measure Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Exposure In Dental Patients Exposed To Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv), Aramandla Ramesh, Leslie R. Halpern, Janet H. Southerland, Samuel E. Adunyah, Pandu R. Gangula Feb 2023

Background: Social habits such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and chemically contaminated diet contribute to poor oral health. Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a global public health epidemic which can exacerbate the prevalence of health conditions affecting a victim's lifespan. This study investigates using saliva as a biomarker for detecting levels of benzo(a)pyrene [B(a)P]; a toxicant present in cigarette smoke and barbecued meat in a population of IPV + female patients. Methods: A cross-sectional IRB-approved study utilized 63 female participants (37 African Americans [AA], and 26 non-African Americans [NAA]), who provided consent for the study. Participants submitted samples of saliva, …

Relationship Between Diabetic Status And Levels Of Salivary Statherin, Nikhil Malhan, David Ojcius, Scott Davis Jan 2022

Relationship Between Diabetic Status And Levels Of Salivary Statherin, Nikhil Malhan, David Ojcius, Scott Davis

Orthodontics and Endodontics Theses

Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the varying levels of salivary statherin production in patients with varying levels of risk for diabetes. The goal is to identify a causal relationship and thus, statherin could be used as a preliminary biomarker for identifying patients with diabetes. Materials and Methods: Saliva from 47 participants were collected in order to quantify the levels of statherin production via western blot analysis. Participants were also asked to fill out self-reported questionnaires regarding risk factors for type 2 diabetes. The questionnaire consisted of 7 questions regarding age, sex, history of diabetes, hypertension, level …

Microbial Screening Reveals Oral Site-Specific Locations Of The Periodontal Pathogen Selenomonas Noxia, Jaydene Mcdaniel, Steven Mcdaniel, Beanca Jhanine Samiano, Matthew Marrujo, Karl Kingsley, Katherine M. Howard Jun 2021

Microbial Screening Reveals Oral Site-Specific Locations Of The Periodontal Pathogen Selenomonas Noxia, Jaydene Mcdaniel, Steven Mcdaniel, Beanca Jhanine Samiano, Matthew Marrujo, Karl Kingsley, Katherine M. Howard

Dental Medicine Faculty Research

Introduction: Selenomonas noxia (SN) is an important periodontal pathogen, associated with gingivitis and periodontitis. Many studies have found associations between SN and indicators of poor health outcomes, such as smoking, low socioeconomic status and obesity. However, less is known about the prevalence of this organism and more specifically about other oral site-specific locations that may harbor this organism. Methods: Using an existing patient repository (n = 47) of DNA isolated from saliva and other oral sites (n = 235), including the dorsum of the tongue, lower lingual incisor, upper buccal molar and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), molecular screening for SN …

Raman Spectroscopic Characterisation Of Non Stimulated And Stimulated Human Whole Saliva, Genecy Calado, Isha Behl, Hugh Byrne, Fiona Lyng May 2021

Raman Spectroscopic Characterisation Of Non Stimulated And Stimulated Human Whole Saliva, Genecy Calado, Isha Behl, Hugh Byrne, Fiona Lyng

Human saliva is a unique biofluid which can reflect the physiopathological state of an individual. The wide spectrum of molecules present in saliva, compounded by the close association of salivary composition to serum metabolites, can provide valuable information for clinical diagnostic applications through highly sensitive vibrational spectroscopic techniques such as Raman spectroscopy. However, the nature of saliva, in terms of collection and patient-related characteristics, can be considered factors which may strongly affect the Raman spectral profile of salivary samples and disrupt the search for specific salivary biomarkers in the detection of diseases. The main objective of this study was to …

Polymicrobial Interactions Between Selected Microbes Of Oral Biofilm And Differential Expression Of Als Genes And Their Related Proteins, Fahim Ayesha Jan 2020

Polymicrobial Interactions Between Selected Microbes Of Oral Biofilm And Differential Expression Of Als Genes And Their Related Proteins, Fahim Ayesha

Student Works (2020-2029)

More than 700 different types of microorganisms dwell in human oral mucosal surfaces. The interactions between these microorganisms contribute to formation of polymicrobial communities on hard and soft tissues as well as on dentures and implants. Candida albicans, a pleomorphic fungus inhabiting oral and gastrointestinal (GIT) mucosa becomes pathogenic in favourable conditions causing local or systemic disease. Since streptococci are early colonisers, the ability of Candida albicans to adhere to streptococci paves the way for an additional surface for candidal colonization and propagation. This study was aimed to investigate polymicrobial interactions between C. albicans, S. sanguinis and S. mitis on …

Salivary And Serum Adiponectin And C-Reactive Protein Levels In Acute Myocardial Infarction Related To Body Mass Index And Oral Health, Jeffrey L. Ebersole, Richard J. Kryscio, C. Campbell, D. F. Kinane, J. Mcdevitt, N. Christodoulides, P. N. Floriano, Craig S. Miller Jun 2017

Salivary And Serum Adiponectin And C-Reactive Protein Levels In Acute Myocardial Infarction Related To Body Mass Index And Oral Health, Jeffrey L. Ebersole, Richard J. Kryscio, C. Campbell, D. F. Kinane, J. Mcdevitt, N. Christodoulides, P. N. Floriano, Craig S. Miller

Oral Health Practice Faculty Publications

Background and Objective

Adiponectin is produced by adipose cells and is considered an anti‐inflammatory molecule. In contrast, C‐reactive protein (CRP) has been identified as a hallmark of systemic inflammation and used as a risk marker of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Of interest was the relationship of these two biomarkers to oral health and CVD risk.

Material and Methods

This investigation examined these two molecules in serum and unstimulated whole saliva of patients within 48 h of an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) compared to control subjects. We hypothesized a differential response in these biomolecules resulting from the heart attack that would be …

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignant tumour of the oral cavity. Detection of OSCC is currently based on clinical oral examination combined with histopathological evaluation of a biopsy sample. Direct contact between saliva and the oral cancer makes measurement of salivary metalloproteinase- 9 (MMP-9) an attractive alternative.

Material and Methods: In total, 30 OSCC patients and 30 healthy controls were included in this prospective study. Saliva samples from both groups were collected, centrifuged and supernatant fluid was subjected to ELISA for assessment of MMP-9. The median salivary MMP-9 values with interquartile range (IQR) of OSCC …
