The aim of the present study is to determine the prevalence and demographics of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) condylar changes in the asymptomatic general population of a hospital based Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) practice. We retrospectively reviewed cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 272 TMJs from 136 consecutive patients to detect osteophyte, subchondral cyst, sclerosis, cortical erosions, and flattening. While gender did not appear to play a significant role in TMJ pathology, age was positively correlated with prevalence of condylar changes. Leukemia is the most prevalent malignancy of leukocytes and can occur in children and adults. Oral manifestations are part of the complexity of signs and symptoms in patients with leukemia and, in some patients, oral manifestations precede systemic manifestations. Oral signs of leukemia include spontaneous bleeding, gingival enlargement, and whiteness of the oral mucosa. Head and neck lymphadenopathy is common in patients with leukemia. Oral manifestations are the result of the direct invasion of immature cells in the oral cavity tissues or indirectly caused by the replacement of the normal blood cells for immature cells causing anemia, leucopenia, and thrombocytopenia. …

An Osteoma Embedding An Ectopic Wisdom Tooth Within The Maxillary Sinus: A Rare Occurrence, Kayvan Fathimani Dds, Facs, Frcd(C), Fibcsoms

Osteomas are frequently reported in the maxillofacial region with much lower incidences in the maxillary and sphenoid sinuses. An unerupted third molar within the maxillary sinus coexisting with a maxillary sinus osteoma is an extremely rare pathologic finding. Such cases can be managed endoscopically or intraorally through a Caldwell-Luc approach. The following case report deals with a patient who presents with an uncommon pathological finding: an osteoma embedding an ectopic tooth within the maxillary sinus.

Evidence-based recommendations by the American Dental Association and umbrella reviews of systematic reviews are summarized to provide indications for SDF use in primary and permanent teeth, including sound surfaces and those with non-cavitated and cavitated caries lesions. High-quality evidence supports that SDF is an effective treatment alternative for managing active cavitated coronal and root caries lesions and preventing root caries lesions. Individuals with symptomatic third molar pathologies frequently seek dental care at emergency departments or urgent dental care centers. This is becoming a dental public health problem, when repeated dental emergency appointments are sought for treatment of symptomatic contralateral wisdom teeth. Body: We designed a retrospective review study of adults 18 years and older with an initial dental emergency visit related to third molar pathology at a single dental urgent care center, at the University of Rochester. Conclusion: A sub-optimal oral health is a predictor for future emergency dental visits, due to pathology of remaining third molars.

Diagnosis And Management Of Nasopalatine Duct Cyst: A Report Of Two Cases And Literature Review, Feiyi Sun Dds, Harry Dym Dds

The nasopalatine duct cyst (NPDC) is one of the most common non-odontogenic, non-neoplastic developmental cysts. It arises from the epithelial remnants of the nasopalatine duct within the incisive canal and crosses the midline of the anterior maxilla. Most cases are asymptomatic and either are discovered by chance on radiographs or present as a soft tissue swelling, pain, or drainage in the palate. The present study describes the diagnosis and surgical management of two NPDC cases at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Brooklyn Hospital Center.

Traumatic Ulcerative Granuloma Mimicking Squamous Cell Carcinoma In Oral Lichen Planus, David I. Tindle Dds, Ms, Dabom

Background: Oral lichen planus is an immune mediated mucosal disorder affecting up to 2% of the population. Dysplasia has been known to develop in 0.1% to 1% of patients with lichen planus. This necessitates close surveillance for the development of atypical lesions.

Case: Described is the case of a 68-year-old female patient with oral lichen planus who developed a non-healing ulceration on her right lateral tongue. Out of concern for neoplasia, a biopsy was performed. Histopathologic report indicated features consistent with traumatic ulcerative granuloma. The lesion did not return.

Conclusions: Oral lichen planus is a common mucosal disease. Although uncommon, …

Medications Associated With Oral Lichenoid Lesions: A Single-Site Retrospective Cohort Study, Debra K. Fischoff Dmd, Ms, Sara Sternbach Dds, Juliana Gomez Dds, Sonal S. Shah Dds

BACKGROUND: The investigators aim to determine the frequency of systemic medications in patients with oral lichen planus or oral lichenoid lesions. METHODS: A retrospective study of lichenoid diagnoses in the New York University College of Dentistry Oral Medicine Clinic. Data obtained included patient demographics, prescription medications and pathologic diagnosis. Comparative analysis was performed. RESULTS: A total of 162 oral lichenoid lesion/oral lichen planus patients were identified: The most frequently found medications were anti-hypertensives, anti-hyperlipidemics followed by metformin, proton pump inhibitors and levothyroxine. CONCLUSION: The findings emphasize the importance of clinicians’ awareness of potential oral adverse reactions from certain medications.

Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) describes a group of genetic conditions affecting the thickness, microstructure, and degree of mineralization of the enamel. Correct diagnosis may be important for managing other serious medical conditions. AI patients are highly susceptible to caries, pain, tooth wear, and loss of the vertical dimension of occlusion, often requiring significant dental treatment throughout their life. Early diagnosis and timely preventative and restorative treatments are crucial to circumvent AI’s psychological, social, and functional sequalae. This case series highlights AI in a 19-year-old patient, with suggestions for further testing and monitoring of the condition.

White sponge nevus (WSN) is a rare autosomal dominant asymptomatic keratotic disorder. A case report is presented of a 28-year-old male with a long-standing asymptomatic and widespread oral mucous membrane keratosis. A diagnosis of WSN was made based on his clinical history, the characteristic appearance of the lesion, and the histopathology.

Lipomas are common soft tissue neoplasms, usually present in the trunk and proximal portions of the extremities and less frequent in the mouth. We reported the case of a 51-year-old patient, affected by an intra/extra-oral swelling for 8 months. Aspiration, surgical excision and histopathological examination confirmed that it was a simple oral lipoma, although clinically and surgically, it mimicked an infiltrating lipoma. Conservative surgical treatment, preferably by an intra-oral approach provides less morbidity and less sequelae for patients.

The authors examined a 73-year-old female because of a chief complaint of bilateral swellings of the parotid gland. After detailed questioning, the authors determined that the perceived facial swelling was caused by the inferior displacement of separate and identifiable facial fat compartments. Aging coupled with gravity results in both a compartmental and intracompartment inferior displacement of facial fat. Long-lasting fillers injected intra-or extra-compartmentally also partake in this inferior migration.

Communication between the organ transplant team and dentist is important in formulating individualized care plans to reduce the incidence of pre- and post-transplant complications. Periodontal diseases and other oral infections may present serious risks that could compromise the success of a solid organ transplant. This article reviews why dentistry is an important component of total transplant care while the patient is on the waiting list for a transplant and after the transplantation. Recommendations regarding the care of the organ transplant patient are given.
