Periodontal disease is characterized by microbial shifts within the oral cavity and chronic inflammation of the gingival tissue, and can lead to tooth loss. Several studies support an association between periodontal disease and risk of chronic systemic conditions, including vascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes mellitus, and cancer, including gastric adenocarcinoma. These associations may be mediated by systemic inflammation, the immune response to periodontal infection, or direct invasion by pathogens. Previous studies of periodontal disease and risk of peptic ulcer have been limited by cross-sectional design, diagnoses that were not confirmed by medical record review, and a lack of …

Background: To understand the relationship between our bacterial microbiome and health, it is essential to define the microbiome in the absence of disease. The digestive tract includes diverse habitats and hosts the human body’s greatest bacterial density. We describe the bacterial community composition of ten digestive tract sites from more than 200 normal adults enrolled in the Human Microbiome Project, and metagenomically determined metabolic potentials of four representative sites.
Results: The microbiota of these diverse habitats formed four groups based on similar community compositions: buccal mucosa, keratinized gingiva, hard palate; saliva, tongue, tonsils, throat; sub- and supra-gingival plaques; …

Introduction Oral cancer is a significant health problem worldwide with almost 300,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Despite the numerous studies done, and even with the best treatment option utilized, more than 50% of patients with oral cancer will experience relapse. In search for better options for prognostication, researches are now focusing on the molecular biology of cancer, for instance in search of reliable tumor markers. Among the markers reported in the literatures, Cyclin D1 is actively studied protein. Cyclin D1 regulates the cell cycle progression by forming a complex with different cyclin dependant kinase. Dysregulation of cyclin D1 …

Treponema denticola is a consensus periodontal pathogen that has recently been associated with endodontic pathology. In this study, the effect of mono-infection of the dental pulp with T. denticola and with polymicrobial “red-complex” organisms (RC) (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, and T. denticola) in inducing disseminating infections in wild-type (WT) and severe-combined-immunodeficiency (SCID) mice was analyzed. After 21 days, a high incidence (5/10) of orofacial abscesses was observed in SCID mice mono-infected with T. denticola, whereas abscesses were rare in SCID mice infected with the red-complex organisms or in wild-type mice. Splenomegaly was …

The Concentration Of Prostaglandin E2 In Periradicular Lesions, Steve N. Mcnicholas
The Concentration Of Prostaglandin E2 In Periradicular Lesions, Steve N. Mcnicholas
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Prostaglandins (PG) have been implicated in pathogenesis of periapical lesions. The purpose of this study was to determine the concentrations of PGE2 in human periapical lesions. Periapical specimens from patients with clinical signs and symptoms of chronic and acute apical periodontitis were obtained and immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen. Periradicular tissues from unerupted third molars were frozen and used as controls. The concentration of PGE2 was determined by radioimmunoassay. Low levels of PGE2 were found in the control tissues as compared to those detected in chronic and acute lesions. A significantly higher level of PGE2 was …

Results Of A Head And Neck Examination: Evaluation Of A Tumor Of The Floor Of The Mouth, Caren M. Barnes, Kenneth W. Nelson, Gary H. Conover
College of Dentistry: Faculty Publications
This article reviews a solitary, well-defined tumor of the floor of the mouth. The tumor presented as a raised, elevated, sessile mass that was freely movable and soft to. the touch. The case illustrates the importance of performing a thorough head and neck examination, and formulating a differential diagnosis if any abnormality is detected. The clinical features, histopathology and responsibility of the dental hygienist in performing a thorough head and neck examination is reviewed.
Oral Lichen Planus : A Clinical Study Of The Association With Diabetes Mellitus And Vascular Hypertension, Gordon M. Rick
Oral Lichen Planus : A Clinical Study Of The Association With Diabetes Mellitus And Vascular Hypertension, Gordon M. Rick
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This investigation concerns the relationship of diabetes mellitus and vascular hypertension to oral lichen planus. Questionnaires were sent to 470 patients with oral lichen planus: 286 responded. Of these patients 103 were examined clinically, and 74 with current lesions were divided into ''keratotic'' and ''erosive'' categories. These patients underwent three-hour oral glucose tolerance tests; also, their asterial blood pressure was determined. In the survey group, diabetes was reported about three times more frequently by those with "erosive"; oral lichen planus than by those ''keratoic" lesions. The overall prevalence of diabetes was about two and one-half times greater than expected compared …
