The Effects Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Postgraduate Endodontic Programs In The United States, Bianca Aboubakare, James Chen, Johnah C. Galicia Jan 2022

The Effects Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Postgraduate Endodontic Programs In The United States, Bianca Aboubakare, James Chen, Johnah C. Galicia

Orthodontics and Endodontics Theses

In December 2019, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was first identified as an acute infectious disease in Wuhan, China and subsequently led to an ongoing pandemic. At the onset of the pandemic, dental professionals were understood to face the greatest exposure risk to SARS-Cov-2 due to aerosolization of fluids from the oral cavity and respiratory airways . As a result, dental professionals, including academic institutions and their students and residents halted much of their operations to minimize exposure risks and potentially slow the spread of infection to peers and patients alike. Currently, there is little in the literature that describes …

Relationship Between Diabetic Status And Levels Of Salivary Statherin, Nikhil Malhan, David Ojcius, Scott Davis Jan 2022

Relationship Between Diabetic Status And Levels Of Salivary Statherin, Nikhil Malhan, David Ojcius, Scott Davis

Orthodontics and Endodontics Theses

Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the varying levels of salivary statherin production in patients with varying levels of risk for diabetes. The goal is to identify a causal relationship and thus, statherin could be used as a preliminary biomarker for identifying patients with diabetes. Materials and Methods: Saliva from 47 participants were collected in order to quantify the levels of statherin production via western blot analysis. Participants were also asked to fill out self-reported questionnaires regarding risk factors for type 2 diabetes. The questionnaire consisted of 7 questions regarding age, sex, history of diabetes, hypertension, level …

An In Vitro Evaluation Of The Kontrolflex Accufile Hand File, Mia Tittle Jan 2022

An In Vitro Evaluation Of The Kontrolflex Accufile Hand File, Mia Tittle

Orthodontics and Endodontics Theses

The aims of this study were to determine the efficacy of the KontrolFlexTM AccufileTM compared to the READY•STEEL™ Flexofile® using an electronic apex locator and to evaluate the instrument’s design via scanning electron microscopy. Actual canal lengths of thirty extracted teeth were determined under magnification. An alginate model was used to determine experimental canal lengths with the Root ZX II apex locator and size #10 Accufiles and Flexofiles. Differences between actual lengths and experimental lengths were compared with Student’s t test. The average experimental lengths were short of the actual length by -0.10 mm (±0.34) and -0.12 mm (±0.16) for …

Current Practices Used To Increase The Success Rate Of The Inferior Alveolar Nerve Block In Mandibular Molars With Symptomatic Irreversible Pulpitis, Nishtha Chauhan Jan 2022

Current Practices Used To Increase The Success Rate Of The Inferior Alveolar Nerve Block In Mandibular Molars With Symptomatic Irreversible Pulpitis, Nishtha Chauhan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Introduction: Pain control during endodontic access is important to ensure patient comfort. Achieving adequate anesthesia in an acutely inflamed mandibular molar poses a treatment challenge as the reported failure rate is 30- 83%. A number of pre-medications, anesthetic techniques and adjuncts have been researched to determine their effect on the anesthetic success of the inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB). The purpose of this research was to describe the current clinical practices used by the members of the American Association of Endodontists in pain control of inflamed mandibular molars.

Methods: A cross-sectional observational study design was used. The study …

Characteristics Of Posterior Permanent Teeth With A Periradicular Diagnosis Of Symptomatic Apical Periodontitis: A Retrospective Study, Christina A. Martin Jan 2022

Characteristics Of Posterior Permanent Teeth With A Periradicular Diagnosis Of Symptomatic Apical Periodontitis: A Retrospective Study, Christina A. Martin

Theses and Dissertations

The diagnosis of apical periodontitis is based on radiographic manifestations and the results of the various clinical tests that can be performed as part of a routine dental examination. Apical periodontitis producing clinical symptoms involving a painful response to biting and/or percussion or palpation is given the diagnosis of symptomatic apical periodontitis (SAP). This study aimed to determine associations of SAP with gender, age, radiographic findings, diagnostic testing, pulpal diagnosis, and location of the tooth in the arch. Data for this study were obtained from patients of record treated at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry in the Department of …

Outcome Of Endodontic Microsurgery: Success And Survival Rates At Virginia Commonwealth University, Abdullah Alawadhi Jan 2022

Outcome Of Endodontic Microsurgery: Success And Survival Rates At Virginia Commonwealth University, Abdullah Alawadhi

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Endodontic microsurgery treatment is an option for teeth with apical periodontitis and may be indicated for teeth with previous endodontic treatment that have not healed, teeth with canal obstructions which would impede a non-surgical approach, and where a biopsy is needed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate healing after endodontic microsurgery in 2-dimensional PA radiographs and 3 dimensional CBCT imaging. Methods: Patient records were pooled from graduate resident cases completed at Virginia Commonwealth University in the Graduate Endodontic Clinic between the years 2010 to 2020. Cases were identified using the CDT codes and a key word search …

Outcome Of Vital Pulp Therapy On Immature Permanent Teeth With Calcium Silicate-Based Materials: Retrospective Cohort Study, Brian I. Hone Jan 2022

Outcome Of Vital Pulp Therapy On Immature Permanent Teeth With Calcium Silicate-Based Materials: Retrospective Cohort Study, Brian I. Hone

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: The purpose of vital pulp therapy is to maintain pulp viability by eliminating bacteria from the dentin-pulp complex and to establish an environment in which apexogenesis can occur. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of vital pulp therapy on immature permanent teeth using different calcium silicate-based materials. Methods: This study was carried out in the Virginia Commonwealth University Graduate Endodontics department in Richmond, Virginia. Vital pulp therapy cases performed by graduate endodontic residents were retrospectively searched and charts were reviewed to determine inclusion into this study. All cases …

Cytotoxic Effects Of Potential Irrigants For Endodontic Surgery, Kaiying Haggard Jan 2022

Cytotoxic Effects Of Potential Irrigants For Endodontic Surgery, Kaiying Haggard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate if hypochlorous acid (Vashe and Endocyn), Ozone, sodium hypochlorite (0.5% NaOCl), chlorhexidine (0.12% CHX), and MTAD can be used as a disinfectant for endodontic surgery without causing bone tissue toxicity by comparing their cytotoxic effects to saline on osteoblasts in vitro.

Methods: Human Fetal Osteoblast Cells (hFOB 1.19, ATCC CRL-11372) were used. The cells viability after 10-minute exposure of Vashe, Endocyn, Ozone, NaOCl (0.5%), CHX (0.12%), MTAD, and saline at concentrations of 10, 30, 60, 90 % volume ratio were measured using CCK8 analysis and the absorbance were measured at 450 …
