A Qualitative Study Of Barriers To Dental Care Among Older Minority Adults Residing In Lower Income Communities, Demetress Davis
A Qualitative Study Of Barriers To Dental Care Among Older Minority Adults Residing In Lower Income Communities, Demetress Davis
Master's Theses
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to explore factors that presented barriers to the use of dental care among low-income minority older adults. Participants were recruited from low-income senior housing in Hartford, CT. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted to obtain data on demographics, oral health status, oral health knowledge and factors that affected use of dental care including finances, perceived oral symptoms, cultural factors, and beliefs about dental care. Interviews were conducted with 17 participants. The major perceived barriers were ability to pay for care, transportation and fear/mistrust of the dentist. Participants may have had poor oral health as …
Analysis Of Periapical Biopsies Submitted For Histopathological Evaluation: A Retrospective Study, Abdullah I. Alqaied
Analysis Of Periapical Biopsies Submitted For Histopathological Evaluation: A Retrospective Study, Abdullah I. Alqaied
Master's Theses
Apical periodontitis is the most common pathological process in the periapical region. Disciplined clinical and radiographic evaluations and appropriate diagnostic tests can detect lesions related to apical periodontitis. Aside from this, lesions mimicking pulp-related pathology but unrelated to pulpal infection and necrosis are occasionally discovered in the periapical region. The objective of this study was two-fold: (1) to determine the prevalence of diverse periapically located pathological entities, and (2) to apply that information to evaluate the rationale for routine submission of surgically obtained tissue for histological examination and diagnosis. Methods: A 5-year retrospective analysis of pathology reports from the UCONN …
Sexual Dimorphism In Periapical Inflammation And Bone Loss From Map Kinase Phosphatase-1 Deficient Mice, Justin Mcabee
Sexual Dimorphism In Periapical Inflammation And Bone Loss From Map Kinase Phosphatase-1 Deficient Mice, Justin Mcabee
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Mitogen Activating Protein (MAPK) kinase phosphatase-1 (MKP-1) has been shown to be a key negative regulator of the MAP kinase pathways of the innate immune system. The impact of MKP-1 in an endodontic model has yet to be studied. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the role of MKP-1 in a bacterial-driven model of pathological endodontic bone loss. Methods: Pulps were exposed in both lower 1st molars of 10-week old Dusp-1+1+IMKP-1 +1+ and Dusp-1-1-IMKP-1-1- mice and left open to the oral environment for either 3 or 8 weeks. At sacrifice, mandibles were harvested and scanned by …
The Effect Of Canal Preparation On Fill Length In Straight Root Canals Obturated With Realseal 1 And Thermafil Plus, Thomas John Heeren
The Effect Of Canal Preparation On Fill Length In Straight Root Canals Obturated With Realseal 1 And Thermafil Plus, Thomas John Heeren
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: A common adverse effect using thermoplasticized obturators is overextension. A canal preparation allowing for predictable obturation length would be of clinical value. This study compared straight canals instrumented to a size 40 file using a 0.04 standardized taper preparation (STP) and a varied taper preparation (VTP) by evaluating the extension of two thermoplastic obturation systems: RealSeall ™ (RS-l) and Thermafil® Plus (TP). Methods: Eighty extracted mature human premolars with single straight canals were randomly divided into 4 experimental groups (n=20). Groups 1 and 2 were instrumented to size 40/04 at working length (WL) with STP. Groups 3 and 4 …

The Effect Of Canal Preparation On Fill Length In Curved Root Canals Obturated With Realseal 1 And Thermafil Plus, David Woodard
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: A preparation technique allowing for a predictable thermoplastic obturation length while ensuring a three-dimensional fill would be of clinical value. Methods: This in vitro study was conducted using 80 extracted mature and patent human 1st and 2nd maxillary and mandibular molar teeth with mesiobuccal (MB) roots exhibiting 20°- 45° canal curvature using Schneider's method. Teeth were randomly divided into 4 experimental groups (n=20). Groups 1 and 3 were prepared using a standard taper preparation (STP) to size 40/04 at working length (WL). Groups 2 and 4 were prepared using a varied taper preparation (VTP) to size 40/02 at WL. …

The hypothesis that a cold plasma jet has the antimicrobial effect against Enterococcus faecalis biofilms was tested in vitro. 27 hydroxyapatite discs were incubated with E. faecalis for six days to form a monoculture biofilm on the disc surface. The prepared substrata were divided into three groups: the negative control, the positive control (5.25% NaOCl solution), and the plasma treatment group. Resultant colony-forming unit counts were associated with observations of bacterial cell morphology changes using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Treatment of E. faecalis biofilm with the plasma and 5.25% NaOCl for 5min resulted in 93.1% and 90.0% kill (P < 0.0001), respectively. SEM detected that nearly no intact bacteria were discernible for the plasmaexposed HA disc surfaces. The demonstrated bactericidal effect of the plasma with direct surface contact may be due to the enhanced oxidation by the locally produced reactive plasma species.
