Primary dental care is a patient-centered service consisting of routine dental checkups. The oral cavity is the first point of entrance to the body for many harmful pathogens. Therefore, primary dental care is essential to not only prevent and treat conditions in the mouth, but to also reduce the number of systemic diseases in the rest of the body. Existing research regarding the analysis of the distribution of oral healthcare practitioners has been conducted across large metropolitan areas within the United States in order to determine the magnitude of healthcare resource deficits. Such research has demonstrated significant deficits in access to oral healthcare predominantly in lower-income urban areas. Periodontitis affects millions of Americans each year, and is especially prevalent among the elderly. Since periodontitis is a chronic, progressive condition, uninterrupted disease progression leads to irreversible oral damage; therefore, periodontitis often reduces the oral health-related quality of life. Furthermore, research strongly suggests a correlation between periodontitis and other systemic diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus), highlighting the importance of understanding, treating, and preventing periodontitis. Problem: There is a greater need in today’s world for better oral care across all populations. In developing countries, the tradition of oil pulling has provided an affordable and accessible alternative to antimicrobial rinse agents. Western society has taken note of this and oil pulling has emerged as the latest oral hygiene fad.

Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the dental health status of several communities in Honduras in terms of the DMFT index (decayed missing and filled teeth). Specifically the study focused on comparisons of the Garifuna (a maroon community in Tela) with the people of San Jose, Copan, and others who traveled from other regions to come to a medical clinic. The purpose of this study is to determine and compare the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions (OML) and related risk habits and the influence of these habits on oral mucosal lesion prevalence among dental outpatients in Malaysia and Yemen during the period from May to October 2009. A total of 554 and 520 dental outpatients from Malaysia and Yemen with mean ages of 41.9± 17.04 years and 36.6±15.62 years respectively were interviewed and examined.
