Women now constitute over half of dental graduates, transforming the profession’s culture and leadership. While women hold a majority of seats on the MDA Board of Trustees, wage disparities, underrepresentation in certain specialties, and work-life balance pressures remain challenges. The author emphasizes that the legacy of women in dentistry is an active, evolving force. New professionals have the opportunity and responsibility to advance this legacy by engaging in mentorship, advocating for fair workplace policies, pursuing ownership, and serving as role models. This ensures the profession is defined by opportunities rather than barriers.

Preterm birth (PTB) and low birth weight (LBW) are leading causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Maternal periodontal disease (PD) has been increasingly linked to these adverse birth outcomes (ABOs), yet questions about causality and treatment effectiveness persist due to study design heterogeneity and potential unmeasured confounding. These gaps hinder the development of clear clinical and public health guidelines. This dissertation addresses these gaps through three interconnected studies assessing the relationship between maternal oral health and ABOs.

Endochondral ossification is a highly coordinated process involving distinct progenitor cell populations within the mesenchymal condensation and subsequent cartilage anlage and perichondrium, all of which drive skeletal formation. Cell-type specific lineage tracing conducted to understand fetal bone development has revealed various fates of early skeletal cells. However, the underlying continuous and precise cellular dynamics of fetal skeletal cells, particularly along the dorsoventral axis, remain unclear. Here, we show that spatiotemporally specific skeletal progenitor cells in the early developmental stage contribute to the dorsal-ventral axis in a manner that is strictly determined during initial developmental stages. Sturge Weber Syndrome is a Phakomatoses group of neurocutaneous disorders. They manifest in the dermal, neural, ocular, and oral regions due to a mutation in the GNAQ gene. These lesions often are unilateral following the course of the trigeminal nerve.Here we present a case of 54-year-old woman with a history of glaucoma with a unilateral reddish-purple discoloration of the palate and a port-wine stain limited to the left side of her face. Periodontitis and type 2 diabetes mellitus are associated with each other in a bidirectional relationship. The mechanism by which diabetes affects periodontitis is understood to be due to the inflammatory effects of hyperglycemia (high blood glucose levels) and a hospitable environment for sugar-consuming bacteria. Periodontitis is known to be associated with higher levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA_1c), a long-term measurement of blood glucose control, and treatment of periodontitis reduces HbA_1c. Accurate diagnosis of furcation defect is essential in periodontal therapy planning. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides three-dimensional visualization, but higher radiation doses remain a concern. This study aims to assess and compare the diagnostic accuracy of low-dose CBCT (LD-CBCT) and high-dose CBCT (HD-CBCT) in detecting and measuring furcation defect using a pig mandible. Detection and accurate assessment of periodontal disease is important to determine the tooth prognosis and treatment. This research used qualitative methods to compare the prescription opioid-related knowledge, opinions and behaviors of oral surgery (OS) and endodontics (E) faculty and postdoctoral trainees. Semi-structured interview guides were used to conduct 10 key-informant interviews with faculty and focus group discussions with 18 postdoctoral trainees. Interviews and focus group discussions were recorded, transcribed and coded for thematic content. E faculty reported infrequent use of opioids for dental pain management, while OS faculty frequently prescribed opioids. Conversely, E faculty were more likely to use prescription drug monitoring programs to track patients’ potential for addiction compared to OS. In conclusion, the frequency …

While attending local, stat and national dental meetings through the years, and even the most recent NYSDA House of Delegates meeting, I am repeatedly surprised to hear comments from senior society officers decrying the “old men in the room” and declaring they have had “enough of the old whitehaired men” dominating the higher echelons of our organization. The younger dentists listening nod their heads in approval. What these well-meaning, experienced dentists were trying to highlight was the need to have younger and more diverse dentists involved in organized dentistry.

Attitudes Of New York State Pediatric Dentists Toward Treating Hasidic Patients, Gideon Turk Dmd, Michelle Goldstein Dmd

Purpose: This survey investigated variations in practices among pediatric dentists and dental residents in New York State concerning the treatment of Hasidic, Haredi or Ultra-Orthodox Jewish (HHUOJ) patients.

Methods and Results: The 16-question survey was distributed to 641 AAPD pediatric dentists and residents via email. Results were analyzed across six variables using the Mann-Whitney U Test. Statistically significant differences were observed in the responses to 14 of 16 questions.

Conclusion: The study revealed statistically significant variations in various aspects related to the treatment of HHUOJ patients, suggesting the need for further education among providers in New York State.

The adverse general and oral health effects from traditional cigarette smoking are supported by decades of research. However, the use of cigarettes in the United States is on the decline, and current research and literature is relatively lacking with respect to novel nicotine consumption methods. Given the increasing and significant use of non-cigarette nicotine-containing products, such as electronic cigarettes, oral nicotine pouches and hookah pipes, attention from oral healthcare providers is warranted. An understanding of the potential negative periodontal outcomes related to these newer nicotine delivery systems is crucial to properly educating and treating patients today.

Trained immunity is a long-term functional reprogramming of innate cells that allows for the formation of immune memory akin to adaptive responses, but with a more rapid nonspecific response. We recently identified an anti-inflammatory trained immunity response, termed trained tolerogenic immunity (TTI), induced by low virulence Candida dubliniensis, that protects against acute lethal polymicrobial sepsis via myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). Trained immunity and MDSCs arise following hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) expansion in the bone marrow. Here, we show that C. dubliniensis induces inoculum-dependent protection and HSPC expansion, whereas depletion of HSPCs following C. dubliniensis immunization abrogates protection. We …
