Dental caries is a complex, preventable disease that remains a global health burden. The burden of this disease has been shown to impact young children before the age of 6 years. Discussing dental caries prevention with the mother/caregiver(s) prior to childbirth is an ideal time to influence positive oral health behaviors. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a person-centered, goal-oriented, collaborative communication style that has been used to help individuals modify behaviors. The interrelated principles of partnership, acceptance, compassion, and evocation underpin the MI approach while utilizing communication skills such as asking open-ended questions, affirmation, reflective listening, and summarizing (OARS) to engage …

The Role Of Research In Fostering Dentistry’S Partnership In Healthcare, Scott Tomar Dmd, Drph, Facd

Journal of the American College of Dentists

In 2000, the landmark report Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General highlighted the magnitude of oral health disparities in the country and emphasized the importance of oral health for overall well-being, calling for a health infrastructure that effectively integrates oral health into overall health. More than two decades later, dental and oral diseases remain prevalent among parts of the American population, key strategies for disease prevention are under attack, and dentistry remains largely isolated from the rest of the US healthcare system. While many factors need to be addressed to change that status, it is widely …

Calcium Carbonate Microparticles As Acid Responsive Targeted Drug Delivery Carriers For Oral Diseases And Its Anti-Bacterial Activity, Hem Raj Joshi Jan 2025

Calcium Carbonate Microparticles As Acid Responsive Targeted Drug Delivery Carriers For Oral Diseases And Its Anti-Bacterial Activity, Hem Raj Joshi

Dissertations and Theses

Dental diseases are mostly caused by bacterial infections in the teeth, forming biofilms that release acids and decay the enamel of the teeth. More than half of the world's population were affected by oral diseases, including periodontitis (gum disease), dental caries (cavities), and oral cancer. Chlorhexidine (CHX) is the mostly used antimicrobial drug for dental diseases, but its overexposure to the healthy teeth causes many side effects, such as tooth staining, taste alteration, and many more. Taking advantage of the acidic environment of infected teeth, we designed a pH responsive targeted drug delivery system using calcium carbonate microparticles (CCMPs) as …

In this study, a new hybrid nanoparticle composed of magnesium hydroxide and copper oxide (Mg(OH)2/CuO) with an optimized ratio of magnesium (Mg) to copper (Cu) was designed and incorporated into a 3D-printed scaffold made of polycaprolactone (PCL) and gelatin. These hybrid nanostructures (MCNs) were prepared using a green, solvent-free method. Their topography, surface morphology, and structural properties were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The fabricated 3D-printed PCL/Gelatin/MCN scaffolds were investigated in vitro and in vivo. Cell viability tests on murine calvarial preosteoblasts (MC3T3-E1) and human umbilical vein …

Skeletal And Dental Effects Of The Carriere Motion Appliance™ In Non-Growing Class Ii Patients: A Cephalometric Study, Anna Cathlyn Giles Jan 2025

Skeletal And Dental Effects Of The Carriere Motion Appliance™ In Non-Growing Class Ii Patients: A Cephalometric Study, Anna Cathlyn Giles

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background and Objectives: Dental and skeletal Class II discrepancies are commonly associated with orofacial disharmony, and therefore appear in orthodontic clinics frequently. Class II correction for adults is generally limited to camouflage treatment with extractions, Class II elastics, Class II correctors, distalization, or orthognathic surgery in severe cases. The orthodontic field is constantly innovating to find efficient and effective means to correct class II malocclusions. The Carriere Motion Appliance TM was introduced in 2004 as an effective “distalizing” appliance to be used as a non-extraction approach to Class II correction for adolescent and adult patients. Recent clinical evidence suggests that …
