Although magnesium (Mg) is a unique biodegradable metal which possesses mechanical property similar to that of the natural bone and can be an attractive material to be used as orthopedic implants, its quick corrosion rate restricts its actual clinical applications. To control its rapid degradation, we have modified the surface of magnesium implant using fluoridated hydroxyapatite (FHA: Ca₁₀(PO₄)₆OH_{2 − x}F_x) through the combined micro-arc oxidation (MAO) and electrophoretic deposition (EPD) techniques, which was presented in our previous paper. PURPOSE: This study compared the effectiveness of the VELscope(R) Vx versus visual and tactile intraoral examination in detecting oral lesions in an adult, high risk population.

METHODS: The pilot study compared the intra oral findings between 2 examination types. The sample was comprised of 30 participants who were addicted to either cigarettes or a dual addiction (cigarettes plus hookah). High risk population was defined as males who were current cigarette smokers or had a dual addiction. Two trained and experienced licensed dental hygienists conducted all examinations. Species-specific antimicrobial therapy has the potential to combat the increasing threat of antibiotic resistance and alteration of the human microbiome. We therefore set out to demonstrate the beginning of a pathogen-selective drug discovery method using the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis as a model. Through our knowledge of metabolic networks and essential genes we identified a “druggable” essential target, meso-diaminopimelate dehydrogenase, which is found in a limited number of species. We adopted a high-throughput virtual screen method on the ZINC chemical library to select a group of potential small-molecule inhibitors. Primary Xanthoma Of The Mandible: Report Of A Rare Case, D. Morel, R. D. Kelsch, P. J. Nolan

Xanthoma is a lesion most commonly seen in soft tissues such as the skin, subcutis, or tendon sheaths. Xanthoma formation is often associated with primary or secondary hyperlipidemia. Primary bone xanthomas are extremely rare benign bone lesions not associated with hyperlipidemia, histopathologically characterized by histiocytes, abundant lipid containing macrophages (foam cells), and multinucleated giant cells. Cholesterol clefts can be found in the medullary bone. Less than ten cases of xanthoma in the mandible have been reported. We present a rare primary intrabony xanthoma in a normolipidemic patient.

Giant cell tumor of the larynx (GCTL) is a rare entity; only 34 cases have been reported in the literature. We report a case of GCTL in a 46 year-old male presenting clinical, radiographic, histological and therapeutic features. Previously reported cases are also reviewed.

It is well known that pain in animal models is difficult to measure. c-Fos, the protein product of the cellular immediate-early proto-oncogene gene, c-fos, can be activated in neuronal cells by noxious sensory stimuli including chemical irritation, mechanical, thermal, and electrical stimulation. The expression of c-Fos provides researchers with a tool by which the processing of somatosensory information, particularly nociception, from the craniofacial regions can be better understood. c-Fos is widely used as an indirect marker of neuronal activation after noxious stimulation in dental pain research, including in the trigeminal nervous system as activated by craniofacial or orofacial stimulation. The chemotactic cytokines, or chemokines, comprise a superfamily of polypeptides with a wide range of activities that include recruitment of immune cells to sites of infection and inflammation, as well as stimulation of cell proliferation. As such, they function as antimicrobial molecules and play a central role in host defenses against pathogen challenge. However, their ability to recruit leukocytes and potentiate or prolong the inflammatory response may have profound implications for the progression of oral diseases such as chronic periodontitis, where tissue destruction may be widespread. Objective The present study aimed to investigate the influence of mechanical stress on Notch signaling component expression by human deciduous dental pulp cells. Materials and Methods Cells were isolated from human deciduous teeth. The mechanical stress was applied to cell culture using a computerized cell compressive force loading apparatus. Cell viability was evaluated using MTT assay. The mRNA expression of selected Notch signaling components was determined using quantitative real-time PCR. Results A computerized cell compressive mechanical stress did not influence cell viability. After mechanical stress treatment for 2 h, the NOTCH1, JAG1, and HEY1 mRNA levels were upregulated. Objective To compare the soft tissue profile changes of Class II Division 1 patients who were treated by different orthodontic modalities. Materials and Methods The subjects comprised 104 Thai growing patients who presented Class II Division 1 malocclusion and were treated by different orthodontic modalities. Group I: 30 patients were treated with cervical headgear. Group II: 30 patients were treated with Class II traction. Group III: 44 patients were treated as an extraction of the four first premolars.
