Orthodontics’ concern about facial esthetics has motivated the investigation of treatment options, and their effects, in hopes of discerning the optimal treatment for patients, both esthetically and functionally. In our efforts to determine the optimal treatment option for patients with Class II, division 1 malocclusions, we examined two current treatment methods’ effects on facial esthetics, namely (1) orthopedic functional therapy using a MARA in combination with Edgewise appliances and (2) Edgewise mechanics alone. Malocclusion is an increasingly common, multifactorial problem in industrialized countries. Although the causes of dental malocclusion are obscure in most instances, one contributing factor may be tooth size. While several researchers have studied whether tooth size contributes to malocclusion, there still is no consensus. Some have found that the mesiodistal widths of the mandibular incisor teeth are significantly larger in subjects with anterior crowding, while others have been unable to support this conclusion. Dental crowding occurs when the mesiodistal tooth crown widths exceed the space available in the dental arch for proper alignment. Previous research dealing with this common orthodontic problem has measured mesiodistal (MD) tooth widths or clinical tooth height-to-width ratios from dental casts. Early or two-phase orthodontic treatment of Class II malocclusions is a debated topic in orthodontic circles primarily because the benefits of early intervention have not been consistently reproduced among researchers. The present study was a retrospective analysis of cephalograms from patients with Class II, division 1 malocclusions at the start of treatment. These were 50 consecutively treated youths who received phase 1 (early) treatment with a Bionator appliance and later treatment with full appliances (all treated by a single clinician). Objective: To determine the degree of cure of a light-cured resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) under molar bands compared with a light-cured resin and a dual-cured resin.

Materials and Methods: The 3 cements used were Fuji Ortho LC, Eagle Spectrum resin, and Variolink II dual-cure. Each sample was indirectly light cured for 20 seconds (10 seconds occlusally, 10 seconds cervically) under sections of molar bands, and the degree of cure was evaluated with micro-MIR FTIR spectroscopy.

Results: The RMGI exhibited a significantly higher mean degree of cure (55.31%) than both of the resins (Eagle 19.23%; Variolink II, 25.42%), which did not …

This study compared seven dental unit water line (DUWL) treatments and three in-office bacteria test kits. Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) 1:10 in tap water weekly; 3 drops of NaOCl in 1 liter of water; Dentapure® DP 40; ICX™ tablet; Sterilex® Ultra powder; Lines™; and Selective Micro® Dental-Clean. Traditional culture technique was compared to HPC Dental Sampler; Aquasafe™ Dental Unit Water Line Test Kit; and Bacteria in Water Test Kit. Eight dental units in the Virginia Commonwealth University Graduate Endodontic Clinic were randomly assigned treatment regimens. Samples were taken weekly initially and after flushing for 1 minute. This study explores the little-understood process of evaluating the performance of assistant and associate deans at dental colleges in the United States and Canada. Specifically, this research aimed to identify the methods, processes, and outcomes related to the performance appraisals of assistant/associate deans. Both deans and assistant/associate deans were surveyed. Forty-four of sixty-six deans (66.7 percent) and 227 of 315 assistant/associate deans (72.1 percent) completed surveys with both close-ended and open-ended questions. In addition, ten individuals from each group were interviewed. Results indicate that 75-89 percent of assistant/associate deans are formally evaluated, although as many as 27 percent may lack …

The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the traditional 360° unirotational disposable prophylaxis angle (DPA) to a 90° reciprocating DPA in terms of spatter production. The 2x3x3 factorial design involved: 2 types of DP As x 3 types of prophylaxis pastes (fine, medium and coarse) x 3 dental handpiece revolutions per minute (rpm) settings (1500, 2000, and 3000). The eStylus'™ operated the DP As under controlled speeds. The aim of this study was to analyze histologic and histomorphometric features of the articular disc in groups with and without disc displacement.

Study design

A sample of 39 temporomandibular joints TMJs (31 case specimens, 8 control specimens) from 28 patients (mean age 31.2 years) were recruited for this study. The patients were considered to be affected and treated surgically with disc repositioning when presenting painful clinical signs of disc displacement after unsuccessful nonsurgical treatment for at least 6 months. To determine the role of Ca²⁺ signaling in activation of the Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) pathway, we subjected MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblastic cells to inhibitors of Ca²⁺ signaling during application of fluid shear stress (FSS). FSS only activated ERK1/2, rapidly inducing phosphorylation within 5 min of the onset of shear. Phosphorylation of ERK1/2 (pERK1/2) was significantly reduced when Ca_i²⁺ was chelated with BAPTA or when Ca²⁺ was removed from the flow media. Inhibition of both the L-type voltage-sensitive Ca²⁺ channel and the mechanosensitive cation-selective channel blocked FSS-induced pERK1/2. Introduction: Population-based studies in orthodontics have focused on differences between normative and perceived needs. However, information from national data on the prevalence of orthodontic visits and their associated factors in adults in the United States is scarce. We examined the demographic profile of likely adult users of orthodontic services and whether there is racial and ethnic disparity in orthodontic visits. Methods: We analyzed data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, 2000-2004. Results: Overall, about 1% of the population reported an orthodontic visit. Current methods of temporary anchorage device (TAD) planning and placement are performed by radiographic analysis in a two-dimensional plane that lends itself to inaccuracy secondary to variations in the angle from which the radiograph is taken, as well as the magnification of the radiographic image, resulting in an increased likelihood of placement errors. The purpose of this study was to compare a three-dimensional (3D) TAD planning and placement technique to a traditional two-dimensional (2D) technique. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic quality of MR images taken on subjects with different types of orthodontic lingual retainers in place. The study provides guidelines and recommendations for use of lingual retainer materials in those patients who are or may potentially undergo routine magnetic resonance imaging. Ten subjects had impressions taken and models made for retainer tray fabrication. Removable trays with each lingual retainer material incorporated in them were fabricated from the models. Objective: To determine whether an amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP)-containing adhesive has an acceptable level of shear bond strength to be used as an orthodontic adhesive.

Materials and Methods: Sixty extracted premolars were randomly divided into three groups for orthodontic bonding. Group 1 used a composite resin adhesive (Transbond XT), group 2 was bonded with an ACP-containing adhesive (Aegis Ortho), and group 3 used a resin-modified glass ionomer (Fuji Ortho LC). All bonded teeth were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 40 ± 2 hours prior to debonding. Shear bond strength and adhesive remnant index (ARI) were recorded for each …

Oral delivery is the most common and preferred route of drug administration although the digestive tract exhibits several obstacles to drug delivery including motility and intraluminal pH profiles. The gut milieu represents the largest mucosal surface exposed to microorganisms with 10^10-12 colony forming bacteria/g of colonic content. Approximately, one third of fecal dry matter is made of bacteria/ bacterial components. Indeed, the normal gut microbiota is responsible for healthy digestion of dietary fibers (polysaccharides) and fermentation of short chain fatty acids such as acetate and butyrate that provide carbon sources (fuel) for these bacteria.
