The radiodensity of a composite resin can greatly influence a clinician's ability to analyze a restoration for failure. The purpose of this study was to determine the relative radiopacities of 29 resin restorative materials compared to enamel, and to verify the comparable radiopacity between shades of 23 of the restorative composite resin materials. Composite resin discs measuring >5mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness were made and polymerized. Background: Implant stability during healing is a pre-requisite for successful osseointegration. In the case of early or immediate implant loading, it is necessary to achieve high level of stabilization during surgical placement. Fixture stabilization can be measured by resonance frequency analysis or implant insertion resistance torque measurement. The aim of this study is to correlate pre-operative radiographic bone density to implant insertion resistance torque in human cadaver jaw bone.

Mandibular advancement is performed in patients routinely by traditional bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) or less commonly by distraction osteogenesis (DO). The influence of mandibular advancement on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is well recognized but not fully explored. This study involved the direct measurement of synovial fluid hydrostatic pressure (SFHP) in the TMJ after mandibular advancement by either BSSO or DO in two male mature minipigs, Sus scrofa. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate; 1) mandibular posterior mono-cortical block onlay bone graft success rates 2) the amount of grafted bone retained after initial resorption in radiographic projections. Seven consecutive patients with 14 mandibular posterior implant sites requiring bone augmentation for implants of a standard 3.8mm x 10mm dimension were sought. Mono-cortical block bone grafts from the ipsilateral ascending ramus were placed then observed with two standardized CT scans, dividing them into two groups: Group A had the first CT at 4 weeks after graft placement and a second taken before Prosthodontic reconstruction, 36.7 weeks later. …

A minicapillary viscometer utilizing <0.5 ml of sample at a volume fraction of <0.1% is described. The calculated a/b of DPPC/DPPG multilamellar liposome was 1.14 as prolate ellipsoids and a/b of dioleoylpropyltrimethyl ammonium methylsulfate-DNA complex at a charge ratio of 4:1 (+/-) was 3.7 as prolate ellipsoids or 4.9 as oblate ellipsoids. The deviation of shape from perfect sphere is thus expressed quantitatively in more than two significant figures. In these measurement, the necessary amount of DNA is <0.5 mg.

Effects Of Ultrasonic Scaling And Hand-Activated Scaling On Tactile Sensitivity In Dental Hygiene Students, Danielle Leigh Ryan

This study was conducted in order to determine if tactile sensitivity varies in dental hygiene students who use the ultrasonic scaler as compared to those who scale with handactivated instruments. A convenience sample of 40 consenting, first year dental hygiene students were randomly assigned to one of two groups. The 40 students had not yet used the ultrasonic scaler nor had any history of injuries or disabilities to the dominant arm, wrist or hand. After establishing a baseline tactile sensitivity score with the Vibratory Sensory Analyzer (VSA), experimental group subjects used the ultrasonic scaler to remove 4cc's of artificial calculus …

Recently, a Mixture of Tetracycline, an Acid, and a Detergent (MTAD) has been advocated to remove smear layer and disinfect canals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of MTAD the flexural strength and modulus of elasticity of dentin as well as its effect on the bond strength to enamel and dentin. Children often present with dental trauma to pediatric emergency departments and pediatric dental offices. There is a wide spectrum of types of dental trauma. Although research has been done concerning the treatment of avulsed teeth, the current recommendations in the published guidelines might still be improved for better long term prognoses. One may speculate that ultrasonification of an avulsed tooth prior to replantation may dislodge existing surface bacteria and improve the prognosis for the tooth. The field of dentistry uses the debriding properties of ultrasonic vibration. It is unknown if this property is detrimental to the periodontal ligament (PDL) of an avulsed tooth. This information is important when a clinician is faced with a debris-covered avulsed tooth following a traumatic event. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect that ultrasonic vibration has on those PDL cells most numerous and most vital to a successful tooth replantation, namely, the fibroblasts.

Distraction osteogenesis, a unique system of affecting rapid bone healing in fractures, realigning malformed bones, and lengthening congenitally short and traumatically shortened bones has become an increasingly utilized technique for the maxillofacial region. The use of distraction osteogenesis has been described for increasing the height of edentulous mandibular alveolar ridges while concurrently forming new bone within the ridge to allow for adequate reconstruction. รายงานผู้ป่วยจัดฟันหนึ่งรายที่ได้รับการกระแทกในฟันตัดด้านบนและด้านล่าง อาการบาดเจ็บดังกล่าว ทําให้เกิดการตายของเนื้อเยื่อประสาทฟัน การละลายด้านนอกรากฟัน และเกิดคอนเดนซิงออสทีไอติส ผู้ป่วยได้ รับการรักษาร่วมกันระหว่าง ทันตกรรมสาขาวิทยาเอ็นโดดอนต์ และทันตกรรมจัดฟัน โดยใช้แคลเซียมไฮดรอก ไซด์ และแรงจัดฟันเบาๆ พบว่าผลการรักษาเกิดการหายของแผล และไม่พบการละลายของรากฟันในขณะที่มี การเคลื่อนฟันทางทันตกรรมจัดฟัน รวมถึงไม่พบภาวะแทรกซ้อนจากการรักษาทางทันตกรรมจัดฟัน ภายใต้การ ติดตามผลการรักษาเป็นระยะเวลา 1 ปี 3 เดือน

Objective This study was designed to assess the microbiological quality of the water used in the dental clinic of Naresuan University (NU). Materials and methods By means of standard plate counts with the use of violet red bile agar, microorganisms in water samples gathered from dental units before and after dental procedures were cultivated and examined at light microscopic level. Results The observed Gram-negative bacilli without spore formation were regarded as total coliforms. Water samples from plastic bottles attached to the dental units and from air-water syringe tips revealed few, if any, colony-forming units (cfu) of total coliforms, while those …

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อรวบรวมและวิเคราะห์จํานวนและการให้บริการรักษาผู้ป่วยที่มีความผิดปกติของการสบฟัน และความสัมพันธ์ของกระดูกขากรรไกรและใบหน้า โดยการจัดฟันร่วมกับการผ่าตัดขากรรไกร (orthognathic surgery)ของผู้ป่วยในโรงพยาบาลคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย วัสดุและวิธีการ รวบรวมข้อมูลจากเพิ่มประวัติผู้ป่วยของโรงพยากรคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหา วิทยาลัยในระหว่างปีพุทธศักรา5 2539-2544 ที่ได้รับการผ่าตัดแก้ไ ความผิดปกติ ของการสบฟันจํานวน 115 คน เป็นชาย 46 คน หญิง 69 คน อยู่ในช่วงอายุ 6-45 ปี โดยแจกแจงข้อมูลและทําการวิเคราะห์สาเหตุที่มารับการ รักษา วิธีการรักษา อาการแทรกซ้อนหลังการผ่าตัดระยะเวลาการติดตามผลหลังการผ่าตัดจนกระทั่งอาการทั่วไปคงที่ ผลการศึกษา กลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นชาย 46 คน คิดเป็น 40% หญิง 69 คน คิดเป็น 40% อายุเฉลี่ย 26 ปี เหตุ ส่วนใหญ่ที่มารับการรักษาคือขากรรไกรล่างยื่นอย่างเดียวและรวมกับความผิดปกติอื่นคิดเป็นร้อยละ 81.7 ผู้ป่วย ได้รับการรักษาโดยการจัดฟันก่อนการผ่าตัดร้อยละ 62.4. ผ่าตัดขากรรไกรสวนใหญ่ได้แก่ ไบลาเทอรอล แซเอลสปลิทเรมิสออสติโอใตมี (bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy) เป็นร้อยละ 91.3 อาการแทรกซ้อนที่สำคัญ 6 เดือนแรกหลังผ่าตัดกรามฝีปากล่าง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 40.7 สรุป ผู้ป่วยที่มีความผิดปกติของขากรรไกรและใบหน้าที่เข้ารับการผ่าตัดในคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์ มหาวิทยาลัยในระยะเวลา 5 ปี พบว่าสวนใหญ่เป็นการผ่าตัดแก้ไขความผิดปกติของขากรรไกรล่างและผลแทรกซ้อน ที่พบมากที่สุดคือ อาการขาของริมฝีปากล่าง

การรักษาคลองรากฟันซ้ํา หมายถึงการรื้อวัสดุอุดคลองรากฟันออก และดําเนินการรักษาคลองรากฟันใหม่ อย่างถูกวิธีทุกขั้นตอน ตั้งแต่การทําความสะอาด ตกแต่งรูปร่าง และอุดคลองรากฟัน รายงานผู้ป่วยนี้ แสดง ผลสําเร็จของการรักษาคลองรากฟันซ้ํา ที่ไม่ต้องใช้วิธีการผ่าตัดร่วมด้วย ในฟันตัดล่างซ้ายซึ่งมีการระบายของ หนองสู่ภายนอกช่องปาก โดยกล่าวถึงลักษณะที่ตรวจพบในคลินิก ลักษณะภาพรังสี รวมถึงการรักษาคลอง รากฟันซ้ําในฟันทั้ง 2 ซี่ จากการติดตามผลการรักษาเป็นเวลา 1 ปี พบว่า รอยแผลที่เกิดขึ้นภายนอกช่องปาก หายเป็นปกติ ฟันทั้ง 2 สามารถใช้งานได้ดี

ความวิการของกระดูกเบ้าฟันตามแนวยืนพบได้ทั้งในโรคปริทันต์ และโรคที่เกิดจากพยาธิสภาพของเนื้อเยื่อ ในโพรงฟัน การรักษารอยโรคนี้อาจต้องการการรักษาคลองรากฟัน หรือปริทันต์บําบัดอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง หรือ ทั้งสองอย่างร่วมกัน ขึ้นกับผลการตรวจความมีชีวิตของเนื้อเยื่อในโพรงฟัน การตรวจร่องลึกปริทันต์ และภาพรังสี ในรายงานนี้กล่าวถึงการรักษาคลองรากฟันในฟันกรามล่างซ้ายซี่ที่สองของผู้ป่วย ที่มีร่องลึกปริทันต์ในด้านแก้มไกล กลางและด้านลิ้นไกลกลางมากกว่า 10 มิลลิเมตร จากการตรวจความมีชีวิตของฟันพบว่าเป็นฟันตาย การโยก ของฟันอยู่ในระดับ 2 จากภาพรังสีมีการละลายของกระดูกเบ้าฟันเฉพาะที่อย่างรุนแรง การรักษาคลองรากฟัน มีผลทําให้อวัยวะปริทันต์กลับเข้าสู่สภาพปกติได้ เนื่องจากสาเหตุของรอยโรคมาจากพยาธิสภาพของเนื้อเยื่อใน โพรงฟัน จากการติดตามผลการรักษา เป็นเวลา 1 ปี 6 เดือน ฟันอยู่ในสภาพปกติใช้งานได้ดี และไม่พบพยาธิ สภาพในภาพรังสี

Problem-Based Learning: Implications For The Allied Dental Sciences Program At Jordan University Of Science And Technology, Zain A. Malkawi

The purpose of this paper is to review the problem-based learning literature and recommend changes to the Allied Dental Sciences curriculum at Jordan University of Science and Technology so that problem-based learning can be incorporated into the curriculum. Characteristics of problem-based learning include students' active participation in learning, and interpersonal skills development through discussion, social interaction, collaborative teams or tutorial groups. Problem-based education encourages students to develop communication and critical thinking competencies, enhance self-directedness and ownership of their own learning, and improve, students' knowledge, and independence.
