Surface Roughness Of Restorative Materials After Simulated Toothbrushing With Toothpastes Containing Theobromine And Arginine: An In Vitro Study, Fikri Öcal, Burak Dayi, Zeynep Küçükakçalı

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Objective: This study examined the effect of toothpastes containing theobromine and arginine on the roughness changes of microhybrid composite, nanohybrid composite, and giomer restorative materials. Methods: A total of 90 disc-shaped specimens were prepared using microhybrid composite (Arabesk-Ara), nanohybrid composite (Herculite-Her), and giomer (Beautifil II-Gio). The samples were divided into 3 subgroups (n = 10), and initial surface roughness was evaluated with a mechanical profilometer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All samples were then subjected to a 1-year brushing simulation via a toothbrushing simulator using toothpastes containing theobromine (Theodent Classic, Theodent) or arginine (Colgate PRO-Relief, Colgate Palmolive); a …

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

The diagnosis and prognosis of teeth with endo-perio lesions present a major challenge for dentists. Proper diagnosis is critical in determining treatment and the long-term prognosis. However, treating complex endodontic and periodontal lesions is one of the most common challenges in current clinical practice. The coexistence of pulpal and periodontal tissue damage may complicate diagnosis and further influence dental prognosis. This article consists of a case report evaluating the efficacy of xenografts and resorbable membrane pericardium in treating bifurcation lesions associated with periodontal lesions of the left mandibular first molar. A 22-year-old female patient was referred by conservative dentistry with …

Enigmatic Cervicofacial Actinomycosis Post Radiotherapy - A Case Report, Amanda Phoon Nguyen Dec 2023

Enigmatic Cervicofacial Actinomycosis Post Radiotherapy - A Case Report, Amanda Phoon Nguyen

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Although thought to be uncommon, it is believed that cervicofacial actinomycosis is underreported due to frequent misdiagnosis. It has been called the “most misdiagnosed disease by experienced clinicians”. A wide range of dental procedures or trauma, including tooth eruption, may precipitate actinomycosis by enabling microorganisms to penetrate the deeper tissue layers via an entry point. This infective disease is significant due to its potentially aggressive and locally destructive nature. This case describes a patient diagnosed with cervicofacial actinomycosis. Her history prior to this was significant for proliferative verrucous leukoplakia, and T4aN0M0 (AJCC 7th Edition) squamous cell carcinoma of the right …

Evaluation Of Morphologic And Morphometric Characteristics Of The Mental Foramen And Anterior Loop In A Turkish Subpopulation Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography, Fatma Büşra Doğan, Faruk Akgünlü

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Objective: Before a surgical intervention in the mandibular interforaminal area, it is important to have a full understanding of the anatomy of the mandibular anterior segment. The evaluation of anatomical structures, variations and pathologies is performed with radiological imaging methods. Today, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is an imaging method which offers all the features necessary for this. In addition to its importance in surgical applications, it is also valuable in terms of anatomical studies thanks to the reliability of its measurements and the fact that it allows for a three-dimensional evaluation. The mental foramen and anterior loop are …

The Effect Of Covid-19 On Antibiotic Resistance, Debra A. Woo Dds, Ma, Karen A. Schulze Dds, Phd, Mali K. Mcguire Dds, Ms

Pacific Journal of Health

Over three years have passed since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. During these times we have experienced significant changes in all areas of our life. In healthcare, more attention was focused on COVID-19 than other concerns. An unexpected consequence of the pandemic was a silent progression of an increased spread of multi-resistant pathogens. While antibiotic use during the pandemic varied across healthcare settings, antibiotics were prescribed for COVID-19 patients, even though antibiotics are known not to be effective against viruses.1 In dentistry, antibiotics were prescribed to prevent potential dental infections, since many dental offices were not open. Antimicrobial …

Endodontic Therapy, Crown Amputation, And Soft Tissue Advancement To Treat A Hopeless Tooth, Timothy Daws Dds, Thomas Bolten Dds, Md

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

Managing patients with a history of intravenous bisphosphonates and antiresorptive medications poses challenges in clinical decision-making. Extractions are generally discouraged in these patients due to the risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). This case study presents an 89-year-old female with metastatic breast cancer on Xgeva, facing a non-restorable tooth (#30). A collaborative approach involving the general dentist, endodontist, and oral surgeon employed endodontic therapy, crown amputation, and soft tissue advancement, avoiding extraction. The technique, akin to coronectomy, mitigates MRONJ risk by preserving bone integrity. Follow-up assessments indicate successful treatment without complications, highlighting the efficacy of this approach in …

The longevity of any prosthesis depends on the materials from which it was fabricated, which is why defects in the material properties may reduce the service life of the prosthesis and necessitate its replacement. This study aims to test the influence of incorporating different weight percentages of thymol micro-powder into the maxillofacial silicone matrix on Shore A hardness of the silicone. Room-temperature vulcanised VST-50 maxillofacial silicone was used to prepare the study specimens. Thymol micro-powder was incorporated into the silicone matrix in two percentages (0.75 wt.% and 1 wt.%). 30 specimens were prepared and then subdivided equally into three groups, …

Dentistry And The Law: Problems With Referral Incentives Explained, Dan Schulte Jd Nov 2023

Dentistry And The Law: Problems With Referral Incentives Explained, Dan Schulte Jd

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

Incorporating referral incentives in dentistry, like gift cards or raffles, can present ethical and legal issues. The MDA's ethical rule 4.E prohibits rebates or fee splitting, extending to any referral source, including patients. Gift cards may be perceived as rebates. Raffle tickets are less problematic, but only the winner gains something of value. State law (MCL 333.16221) deems fee division unethical. For insurance and dental plan agreements, check for clauses mandating specific fee schedules and discouraging referral fees to ensure compliance. Federal laws might also apply if incentives are used for Medicaid or Medicare patients.

Advocacy Spotlight: Important: State Issues Changes To Delegation Of Duties Rules, Neema Katibai Jd

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

The Michigan Board of Dentistry has introduced changes to the rules governing the delegation of duties to dental auxiliaries, including the reclassification of "dental assistants" (those not formally trained or licensed) as "unregistered dental auxiliaries" (UDAs). The classification Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) remains. Changes involve the supervision levels for specific tasks and guiding training UDAs for orthodontic duties. Notable changes include allowing UDAs to perform certain orthodontic tasks and expanding their scope of work to include duties such as taking impressions, polishing, and providing nutritional counseling. Dental professionals should know these changes and the supervision required for delegation to UDAs …
