External Root Resorption In The Orthodontic Patients, Frank Earl Litchfield
External Root Resorption In The Orthodontic Patients, Frank Earl Litchfield
All ETDs from UAB
External Apical Root Resorption (EARR) is a side effect of orthodontic treatment that results in root shortening in about one-third of orthodontic patients. Great variability among patients exists in their susceptibility to this multifactorial condition, and both treatment and patient specific factors contribute to EARR. Root resorption values were found to be higher in Hispanics compared to Asians and Caucasians (1). However, the prevalence of EARR is not well documented in all populations. Since African Americans represent the largest minority group in the United States, establishing the prevalence and risk factors for EARR within this ethnicity is important. Objective: To …

Light Transmission And Wear Of Translucent Zirconia After Conventional And Fast Sintering Cycle, Anvita Maharishi
All ETDs from UAB
ABSTRACT Introduction: Zirconia is classified by the mole percentage of yttria contained in the zirconia. The most strong and opaque material contains 3 mol % yttria, intermediate strength and opacity contain 4 mol %, and whereas 5 mol % is the weakest but most translucent zirconia. Refined zirconia powder is pressed into a mold to form a disc which is then milled to form a restoration. Post milling of sintered zirconia restorations is necessary to obtain final mechanical and physical properties of the restoration. Traditionally conventional sintering cycles required 6-8 hours to sinter. Whereas, fast sintering cycles have been have …

Clinical And Histomorphometric Outcomes Following The Use Of Small Versus Large Particle Sized Bone Allografts In Ridge Preservation Procedures: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Gentiane Valiquette
All ETDs from UAB
Alveolar ridge preservation at the time of tooth extraction is a commonly performed procedure as it significantly minimizes ridge resorption and allows for more optimal implant placement. The amount of new vital bone has been shown to vary with the use of different types of bone replacement grafts, however, the effect of bone graft particle size on the outcomes following ridge preservation has not been elucidated in the scientific literature. The present randomized clinical trial compared clinically, radiographically and histomorphometrically the use of small- (0.25-1.0mm) versus large- (1.0- 2.0mm) sized particle mineralized cortico-cancellous bone freeze-dried bone allografts (FDBAs) in ridge …

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a facial defect that is represented as a split in the mouth, palate or both. In the United States approximately 4440 babies are born with CLP annually. More than US$600 million are spent on their treatment and mostly on surgical interventions. Considering the high expenses of primary palatal repair, its effect on growth has been controversial. Surgical scaring is postulated as the cause of maxillary hypoplasia. However, this operation has been considered necessary for function and development of speechHowever, this operation has been considered as necessary for better functional and speech outcomes. Endodontic Post Retention With Resin Cements (Ilumi Fiber Post), Faimeena Farheen
Endodontic Post Retention With Resin Cements (Ilumi Fiber Post), Faimeena Farheen
All ETDs from UAB
Objectives: Loss of post retention is the leading cause in the cemented post. There is no good method of bonding a fiber post in a post space with resin cements because adhesive cementation into a prepared post space is difficult- due to an inability to place, dry and light cure the adhesive and the cement. A new post system (iLumi) that transmits light to the apex of the post has recently been developed. We want to know if this system will improve post retention in each section (coronal, middle and apical) of the prepared post space and if this curing …
A Randomized Trial To Evaluate The Effect Of Allograft Bone Particle Size On Histomorphometric And Clinical Outcomes Following Ridge Augmentation Procedures, Hussein Basma
All ETDs from UAB
Ridge deficiency is an unfortunate obstacle that obviates the placement of dental implants or results in placing them at an angle that compromises the prosthetic restoration. An ideal volume is essential for implant placement in an optimal three-dimensional position. Several methods for augmenting the alveolar ridge in preparation for implant placement have been described. Autogenous bone grafts, considered to be the “gold standard”, are associated with significant morbidity and require a second surgical site. Guided bone regeneration (GBR), is an alternative technique that use bone-substitute materials as adjuncts to or replacements for autografts in bone augmentation procedures to overcome the …

All ETDs from UAB
A PROSPECTIVE RANDOMIZED CLINICAL TRIAL TO COMPARE FREE GINGIVAL GRAFTS AND CONNECTIVE TISSUE GRAFTS AROUND IMPLANTS WITH A LACK OF KERATINIZED MUCOSA JEFFREY T HSU PERIODONTOLOGY ABSTRACT Although evidence is equivocal regarding the need for keratinized mucosa around dental implants, the consensus among researchers and clinicians is that peri-implant keratinized mucosa is beneficial to the health and stability of the implant prosthesis. An adequate width of keratinized mucosa (WKM) provides a resistant barrier to bacterial infiltration, facilitates restorative procedures, improves esthetic outcomes, patient comfort, and ease of oral hygiene. Many surgical approaches have been used to increase WKM around dental …

All ETDs from UAB
The Runx2 transcription factor is essential for the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into functional chondrocytes and osteoblasts. In humans, the haploinsufficiency of the Runx2 gene is associated with cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD). The CCD is characterized by short stature, open sutures and fontanels in the skull, hypoplastic clavicles and supernumerary teeth. Skeletal elements disrupted in CCD patients are developed by intramembranous and/or endochondral ossification. However, the cell type specific roles of the Runx2 gene in the development of CCD-associated skeletal defects remain unknown. The main goal of this research was to define the specific role of the Runx2 gene in …

All ETDs from UAB
Dental caries is the most widespread of all diseases. It causes destruction of tooth structure by dissolving the enamel first, then progressing to the dentin. While it is possible to replace carious tooth structure with invasive restorations, it is highly desirable to arrest or reverse the disease process so that the restorations can be avoided. One of the most difficult areas to clean or use preventive, non-surgical treatment is the contact area between teeth. Recently treatment with resin polymers to infiltrate enamel and dentin affected by caries has been in-troduced. The infiltration technique arrests the lesion progression by penetrating and …
