All ETDs from UAB

The main goals of orthodontic treatment are to achieve a harmonious dentalocclusion and enhance the patient’s dentofacial appearance. External Apical Root Resorption (EARR) is a side effect of orthodontic treatment1. It results in the permanent loss of tooth structure from the root apex2. EARR is a multifactorial condition which includes patient related and treatment related risk factors. Patient-related factors include genetics, severity of malocclusion, tooth-root morphology, systemic factors, density of alveolar bone, root proximity to cortical bone, previous exposure to trauma, patient age and sex. Orthodontic treatment related risk factors include treatment duration, amount of force and mechanics used, direction …

Wear Of Orthodontic Bite Turbos And Opposing Enamel, Kyle Feagin

All ETDs from UAB

Orthodontic bite turbos are used to separate the maxillary and mandibular arches when disocclusion is needed for facial placement of orthodontic brackets or extrusion of teeth. The bite turbo should have adequate wear resistance to maintain the disocclusion but also avoid abrasion of the opposing enamel. The objective of this study was to measure the wear and opposing enamel wear of three materials used as bite turbos. 8 specimens (10x8x4 mm) each of Transbond LR (3M), Transbond Plus (3M) and Triad gel (Dentsply) were prepared in silicone molds and light cured for 30 seconds using an Acteon Satelec Blue Ray …

Temporomandibular Joint Function After Orthognathic Surgery, Aikaterini Kleopatra Aslanidou

All ETDs from UAB

Orthognathic surgery has 3 basic goals: function, esthetics and stability. The relationship between orthognathic surgery and temporomandibular joint function remains highly controversial. Regarding the functional changes and range of mandibular movements after surgery, mandibular hypomobility and other signs and symptoms of joint dysfunction are associated with orthognathic surgery in the literature. The aim of this study is to evaluate the function of the temporomandibular joints at lest 6 months after orthognathic surgery and compare them with non-surgical subjects. The null hypothesis is that there is no difference in subjective symptoms reported by the subjects and clinical evaluation of the range …

Comparison Of Three Fluoride Dentifrice Products In The Prevention Of White Spot Lesions In Orthodontic Treatment, Anna B. Palombini Jan 2015

Comparison Of Three Fluoride Dentifrice Products In The Prevention Of White Spot Lesions In Orthodontic Treatment, Anna B. Palombini

All ETDs from UAB

Introduction:. During the course of orthodontic treatment, enamel decalcification is a common problem. Demineralized enamel, the precursor to caries formation, can be attributed to fixed orthodontic appliances and prolonged exposure to bacterial plaque. Progression to clinically detectable white spot lesions may occur as early as one month following the placement of orthodontic appliances. Such problems have influenced clinicians to search for a solution. Because fluoride treatment immediately upon debonding is not advocated, clinicians have proposed fluoride treatment and fluoride-releasing materials at the commencement of the therapy. The two new anti-cavity toothpastes, ClinproTM 5000 with 1.1% Sodium Fluoride and ClinproTM Tooth …
