Although the indirect method for preparing dental castings has been in use for over forty-five years, very little information has appeared in dental literature relative to its accuracy. The development of a precise and quantitative method for determining the adaptation of wax patterns or castings was necessary before such an evaluation could be considered valid. It was felt the Mercury Micromeasurement test, devised in 1958 by Hollenback, should meet these requirements. A description of the test had been published. However, at the time the project was begun, no data had appeared in the literature.

This is a short discussion on the technique of denture construction which is being employed by the most prominent and successful prosthetists of today. Since it is annoying to have a technical investigation misinterpreted because of lack of uniformly applied terms, there is a necessity to annex concise definitions to the technique. Thus a strenuous effort will be made to closely adhere to the original meaning of standard terms and to modify these or add to them as little as possible when they are comprehensive. Celluloid gives the most natural appearance of all the plastic vegetable bases used in making dentures. It closely resembles porcelain in the translucent live-tissue color of the mucous membrane and gums. In some cases, it proves very satisfactory while it discolors and quickly disintegrates in some mouths. Vulcanite is usually more durable. The value of celluloid depends upon the care given it by the possessor and the manipulation of the material while under construction.
