การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อหาทางเลือกสำหรับการเคลือบฟลูออไรด์เจลเฉพาะที่ ด้วยการเปรียบเทียบวิธีการทาบนตัวฟันด้วยพู่กัน (Paint on) กับวิธีถาดเคลือบ (tray) ซึ่งเป็นวิธีที่ใช้อยู่ในปัจจุบัน โดยศึกษาประสิทธิภาพของปริมาณฟลูออไรด์ที่คงค้างอยู่ในน้ำลาย การวิจัยนี้เป็นการวิจัยทางคลินิกแบบไขว้ ใช้อาสาสมัครจำนวน 19 คนที่มีช่วงอายุ 12-15 ปี ทำการเก็บน้ำลายชนิดไม่กระตุ้นก่อนและหลังการเคลือบฟลูออไรด์เจล ที่ 0, 5, 10, 20, 30 และ 60 นาที ระยะพัก (washout) 7 วัน วัดความเข้มข้นของฟลูออไรด์ในน้ำลายด้วยฟลูออไรด์อิเลคโทรด ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ปริมาณฟลูออไรด์เจลที่เหมาะสมในวิธีการทาบนตัวฟัน คือ ปริมาตร 0.4 มิลลิลิตรซึ่งน้อยกว่าวิธีถาดเคลือบถึง 12.5 เท่า ผลของฟลูออไรด์ในน้ำลายและฟลูออไรด์ในช่องปากจากวิธีการทาบนตัวฟันมีปริมาณมากกว่าวิธีถาดเคลือบอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ (F= 113.458, p= .0001, t = 7.695, p= .0001 ตามลำดับ) อัตราการไหลของน้ำลายไม่แตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ (F=.121, p=.732 และค่าครึ่งชีวิต (t half-life) ของฟลูออไรด์ในน้ำลายแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ (t= 3.505, p= .003) แม้ว่าวิธีการทาจะมีค่าครึ่งชีวิตสั้นกว่าแต่ความเข้มข้นของฟลูออไรด์ในน้ำลายมีค่าสูงกว่าวิธีถาดเคลือบทุกช่วงเวลาที่วัด สรุปได้ว่าการเคลือบฟลูออไรด์เจลด้วยวิธีการทาบนตัวฟันโดยใช้พู่กัน เป็นทางเลือกที่มีประสิทธิภาพสำหรับการเคลือบฟลูออไรด์เจลเฉพาะที่โดยเฉพาะผู้ป่วยที่มีความเสี่ยงในการเกิดโรคฟันผุสูงและไม่สามารถควบคุมการกลืนได้ นอกจากนี้ยังประหยัดทรัพยากร สะดวกในการบริหารจัดการ และอุปกรณ์หาได้ง่าย

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับฟันผุด้านประชิด ในนักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 ในเขตอำเภอสองพี่น้อง จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี วัสดุและวิธีการ งานวิจัยนี้เป็นการศึกษาชนิดตัดขวางในนักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 จำนวน 133 คน อายุเฉลี่ย 16.86 ± 0.48 ปี ที่แปรงฟันด้วยยาสีฟันผสมฟลูออไรด์ทุกเช้า การศึกษานี้ใช้ฟันผุด้านประชิดที่พบจากภาพรังสีชนิดกัดสบเป็นตัวแปรตาม เก็บข้อมูลความถี่ของการรับประทานอาหารที่มีส่วนประกอบของคาร์โบไฮเดรตระหว่างมื้อจากแบบบันทึกอาหาร 3 วัน ตรวจทางคลินิกเพื่อเก็บข้อมูลฟันผุ รอยฟันผุในระยะเริ่มต้น ดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์พีเอชพี และดัชนีการมีเลือดออกจากเหงือกด้วยการตรวจทางคลินิก สัมภาษณ์พฤติกรรมการแปรงฟันก่อนนอน ระดับการศึกษาของมารดา อายุ และเพศ นำข้อมูลมาวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์โดยใช้สถิติถดถอยโลจิสติก ที่ระดับนัยสำคัญ 0.05 ผลการศึกษา กลุ่มตัวอย่างมีความชุกของฟันผุด้านประชิดร้อยละ 48.12 ผลการวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ด้วยสถิติถดถอยโลจิสติก พบว่า ฟันผุด้านประชิดมีความสัมพันธ์อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติกับดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์พีเอชพี (p = 0.005, OR 2.57) และความถี่ของการรับประทานอาหารที่มีส่วนประกอบของคาร์โบไฮเดรตระหว่างมื้อ (p = 0.034, OR 1.52) ในทางตรงกันข้ามฟันผุด้านประชิดมีความสัมพันธ์ผกผันอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติกับดัชนีการมีเลือดออกจากเหงือก (p = 0.018, OR 0.97) และระดับการศึกษาของมารดาที่ต่ำกว่ามัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 3 (p = 0.002, OR 0.24) ส่วนปัจจัยอื่นไม่มีความสัมพันธ์กับฟันผุด้านประชิดอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ สรุป นักเรียนที่มีดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์พีเอชพีสูง หรือมีความถี่ของการรับประทานอาหารที่มีส่วนประกอบของคาร์โบไฮเดรตระหว่างมื้อสูง มีโอกาสเสี่ยงต่อการเกิดฟันผุด้านประชิดสูง

Provider Appearance: A Survey Of Guardian And Patient Preference, Joshua Westphal

Purpose: To understand guardian and child preferences for the appearance of their pediatric dentist. This was a cross-sectional descriptive study using survey methodology with patients and parents that attended the VCU Pediatric Dental clinic.

Methods: A total sample of 100 guardians and 97 pediatric patient participants completed the computer-based questionnaire. Four subjects were asked to pose for photographs wearing various combinations of attire (professional, casual, white coat, scrubs).

Results: Among guardians, 56% reported preferring a provider in scrubs, with white coat the second most preferred attire (39%) for their children. For pediatric patients, scrubs were still most often selected, …

Purpose: This study investigates knowledge about HPV and examines if pediatric dental providers should include HPV education for guardians of patients 10-18 years.

Methods: Legal guardians of 10-18 year-old patients of the Virginia Commonwealth University Pediatric Dental Clinic were enrolled in this prospective cohort study. Participants completed a baseline survey, were provided HPV education, completed an initial follow-up survey, and then completed a 6-month follow-up survey.

Results: A total of 54 participants completed the baseline and initial follow-up surveys and 17 completed the 6-month follow-up survey. The average number of correct responses was 3.4 of 6 knowledge questions, which significantly …

A Comparison Of Treatment Planning Modalities For The Pediatric Dental Patient, Martha M. Holland

Purpose: To assess the treatment modalities of pediatric dentists for restoring Class II lesions in primary molars.

Methods: A survey of eight cases was emailed to AAPD members, who were asked to choose a stainless steel crown (SSC) or composite resin. Treatment choice was associated with provider type, years in practice, behavior management, lesion detection, and patient age.

Results: Clinically detectable caries restored under general anesthesia were treated more often with a SSC. Faculty and residents chose a SSC at a greater rate. Providers with 10 or more years experience chose a SSC more often.

This thesis attempted to evaluate the effects of the use of APC™ Flash-Free (FF) and conventional adhesives in bonding of orthodontic brackets on plaque formation and retention, WSL development, and bracket failure in-vivo. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an oral health education intervention on oral health behaviors, oral health knowledge, and diet/amount of sugar consumed by fifth and sixth graders attending charter schools in the city of San Bernardino. Caries status of this particular population was recorded via dmft/DMFT and ICDAS. 143 students (aged 9-13 years) completed a 19 question pre-intervention survey related to oral health behaviors, dental knowledge and diet/amount of sugar consumed. Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective chart review was to determine if the survival of two methods of vital pulp therapy (VPT) were influenced by the pre-operative radiographic depth and location of caries. Methods: Electronic patient records (axiUm®) that contained the procedure codes D3120, Indirect Pulp Therapy (IPT), or D3220, Therapeutic Pulpotomy (TP), were queried. Qualifying charts’ pre-operative and post-operative radiographs were viewed in MiPACS® by two raters. Visit records were queried again to identify any other treatment failures. Purpose: The purpose was to determine differences in serum vitamin D, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and calcium levels between patients with early childhood caries (ECC) and patients without dental decay.

Materials and Methods: Serum vitamin D, PTH, and calcium levels were obtained from 30 children without dental decay who acted as controls and 60 children with ECC. A questionnaire was filled out by the parent/guardian of each participant consisting of questions regarding medical and dental history, exposure to sources of vitamin D and demographic information.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the social determinants of CHIP (Child Health Investment Partnership) of Roanoke Valley children who participated in the preventive oral health program compared to those who did not.

Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of children (n=2,425) enrolled in CHIP of Roanoke Valley from September 2008-September 2014. Bivariate analysis and multivariable logistic regression models were used to compare age, gender, race, locality, parents’ education level, age at enrollment, and length of enrollment for oral health program participants versus those who did not participate.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the oral health-related quality of life for patients treated at Give Kids a Smile. Methods: Participants were asked to complete a 25-question survey regarding their child’s oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), with answers ranked on a 0 to 4 point scale. Results: A total of 78 questionnaires were completed, with the mean score of 5.19. Although we know that children covered by Medicaid often do not receive needed dental services, the extent of the problem in Maine is not fully understood. In particular, rural communities in Maine may face challenges for families to access dental services for their children given low reimbursement rates and fewer available providers. This project addresses these gaps in knowledge by examining MaineCare- funded utilization and dental care access for children with MaineCare in four rural Maine towns in the Lakes Region.

The authors present a case study of a 13-year-old female with a past medical history of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), an autosomal dominant disorder. It usually presents with a triad of epilepsy, mental deficiency and facial angiofibromas that are often dis tributed around the nose, cheek and chin, and are frequently shaped like butterfly wings. In addition, oral manifestations include gingival enlargement and developmental enamel pitting on the facial aspect of the anterior permanent dentition in 50% to 100% of patients. Purpose: To determine if there is an association between early childhood caries (ECC) and vitamin D deficiency, as measured via a serum sample. An exploratory goal was to investigate the possibility of measuring vitamin D with a salivary assay. Methods: Serum samples of patients who were scheduled for a dental or otolaryngology procedure under general anesthesia were assessed for 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), parathyroid hormone and calcium. Results: Our analysis indicates that the vitamin D levels of the controls and ECC group were significantly different.
