Objective: To provide an analysis of the association between the longevity of breastfeeding and development of ECC. Determine the optimal time frame in which mothers should cease breastfeeding to reduce ECC development. Methods: Dr. Brickhouse, PubMed, Google Scholar and other scholarly databases were utilized to find current scientific evidence on the effects of breast milk on ECC. Introduction

Poor oral health is associated with lost hours at work or school, which may affect a person’s productivity. The objective of our study was to estimate work or school hours lost to dental visits among adults aged 18 and older by the types of visits (emergency or unplanned; routine, planned, or orthodontic; or cosmetic) and to determine the factors associated with hours lost.

Objective: Develop methodology to estimate the annual cost of resources used by school sealant programs (SSPs) and demonstrate its use.

Methods: We used existing literature and expert opinion to identify SSP cost components and the most appropriate units for their measurement (e.g., per operator) and collection frequency (e.g., per day). For equipment and reusable instruments, costs were sufficiently homogenous across SSPs that we could provide default per unit cost estimates (2016 US$) that SSPs can use in lieu of collecting their own data. Objectives: Information on the impact of health insurance on smoking and quit attempts at the state level is limited. We examined the state-specific prevalence of cigarette smoking and past-year quit attempts among adults aged 18-64 by health insurance and other individual- and state-level factors.

Methods: We used data from 41 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, the jurisdictions that administered the Health Care Access module of the 2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Data on quit attempts included current smokers with a past-year quit attempt and former smokers who quit during the past year.

School Hours Lost Due To Acute/Unplanned Dental Care, Shillpa Naavaal, Uma Kelekar

Objective: We estimated the school-hours lost for acute/unplanned dental care and examined the associated factors among children aged 5-17 years using 2008 National Health Interview Survey data.

Methods: We used bivariate and multivariate regression models to investigate the associations between school hours lost and socioeconomic and oral health factors (p < .05).

Results: Acute/unplanned dental care accounted for a loss of 34 million school-hours annually. Compared to children with very good oral health, children with fair/poor oral health were 2.8 times more likely to lose ≥1 hours. Children in high-income families had 31% less likelihood of losing any school …

Purpose: This study used a survey of program directors and program chairs to analyze relationships related to curriculum development for a dental hygiene-based dental therapist and the question of how external variables affect allied health workforce development and implementation.

Methods: A survey instrument was utilized to help identify the relationship between a dental hygiene-based dental therapist curriculum and the external influences of future needs of the dental hygiene profession and workforce; external influences; and institutional influences on curriculum design and implementation using Spearman’s rho testing. Objectives: To investigate craniofacial and dental characteristics and identify mutations of the patients affected with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and dentinogenesis imperfecta (DGI). Methods: Patients included in this study were diagnosed with OI. Physical, oro-dental, and radiographic examinations were performed. Mutation was identified by whole exome sequencing. Tooth characteristics including mineral density, tooth color, surface roughness, hardness, elastic modulus, mineral compositions, and ultrastructure of DGI teeth were studied compared to the controls. Objective: To investigate oro-dental characteristics and amelogenesis imperfecta (AI)-causing genomic variants associated with AI. Methods: Three Thai families affected with autosomal dominant hypocalcified amelogenesis imperfecta (ADHCAI) were recruited. Whole exome sequencing was used to identify mutations, confirmed by sanger sequencing. Clinical and radiographic features were recorded. The extracted teeth obtained from 3 patients were subjected for investigations of their properties and ultrastructure by micro-computerized tomography, surface profilometer, nano-base indentation system, EDX analysis, and SEM. Results: The probands were diagnosed with ADHCAI. The nonsense mutation, c.1387C>T, p.Gln463*, in exon 5 of the FAM83H was identified in all probands. AI teeth …

Purpose: The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of brushing with the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri on plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation. This study included 34 healthy adult subjects, ages 18-65, exhibiting gingivitis. Participants were asked to participate in a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study testing whether brushing with L. reuteri probiotic drops added to toothpaste reduced the clinical parameters of gingivitis more than brushing with a placebo drop added to toothpaste.

Perceptions of marijuana were studied in healthcare students at EWU. It was found that most students had an average self-reported knowledge of marijuana use. Marijuana comes in several forms such as, edibles, smoked, patches, and lotions. With its recent legalization in Washington State, sales tax alone has accumulated $400 million dollars in the past 3 years. With this increase in use an examination of healthcare students was warranted. Purpose: The purpose of this research was to explore the effectiveness of a student-led interprofessional education (IPE) workshop in improving student attitudes and perceptions toward IPE. Students from four health science programs including Dental Hygiene, Communication Sciences and Disorders/Speech and Hearing, Health Services Administration and Occupational Therapy participated in a community service event. Students provided screenings to veteran patients including a health history intake, hearing test, and sleep screening while other students observed.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at investigating the relationships between health and work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) in dentists, and the relationship with socio-demographic, work and health variables. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 204 dentists who work in public clinics in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. We used a self-administered survey that included questions on socio- demographic and health aspects, work-related factors, and the Nordic questionnaire. RESULTS: WMSDs were often reported in the neck, shoulder, lower back, and hand/wrists.
