Synthesis Of Trifluoromethyl Ketones By (Diethylamino) Sulfur Trifluoride (Dast)-Mediated Nucleophilic Trifluoromethylation Of Benzoic Acids, Michael A. Vescio
Synthesis Of Trifluoromethyl Ketones By (Diethylamino) Sulfur Trifluoride (Dast)-Mediated Nucleophilic Trifluoromethylation Of Benzoic Acids, Michael A. Vescio
Honors College Theses
Within the past few decades, the presence of fluorine containing
organic molecules has increased significantly. Many of the
current industrial production methods are not cost-effective,
practical, or inherently safe. This work describes a new methodology
for the synthesis of trifluoromethyl ketones. Our new method involves
the use of benzoic acid and trifluoromethyl trimethylsilane (TMSCF3) as starting
materials along with diethylamino sulfur trifluoride (DAST) as a reagent
to obtain moderate to good yields of expected products in a short
reaction times.
The Kinetics And Cellular Imaging Of Multi-Color Fluorescent And Chemiluminescent Compounds, Bo Li
The Kinetics And Cellular Imaging Of Multi-Color Fluorescent And Chemiluminescent Compounds, Bo Li
Chemistry Theses and Dissertations
A three-dimensional display is a useful method which can provide spatially accurate representations of high-resolution images with a 360° view. Therefore, it has potential to be applied widely in the medical area, entertainment industry and for military applications. According to the first-generation 3D digital light photoactivatable dye display (3D Light PAD), N-phenyl spirolactam rhodamine B was used as photoactivatable compound that could be switched from non-fluorescent to fluorescent using ultraviolet light. However, the detailed mechanism, how other rhodamine derivatives would perform in 3D Light PAD, and what other factors in this system could improve the imaging quality remained unclear. …
Anatomy And Physiology Preparatory Course Textbook (2nd Edition), Carlos Liachovitzky
Anatomy And Physiology Preparatory Course Textbook (2nd Edition), Carlos Liachovitzky
Open Educational Resources
The goal of this preparatory textbook is to give students a chance to become familiar with some terms and some basic concepts they will find later on in the Anatomy and Physiology course, especially during the first few weeks of the course.
Organization and functioning of the human organism are generally presented starting from the simplest building blocks, and then moving into levels of increasing complexity. This textbook follows the same presentation. It begins introducing the concept of homeostasis, then covers the chemical level, and later on a basic introduction to cellular level, organ level, and organ system level. This …
Imaging The Tumor Microenvironment Using 1,2-Dioxetane Chemiluminescence Agents, Lucas Ryan
Imaging The Tumor Microenvironment Using 1,2-Dioxetane Chemiluminescence Agents, Lucas Ryan
Chemistry Theses and Dissertations
As complex organisms, animals and humans rely on a delicate interplay between many connected systems to maintain proper cellular and whole-body function. Oxygen regulation and homeostasis are vital for proper function in healthy cells, as are core components of aerobic metabolism and efficient ATP generation to supply our energy needs. Maintaining pH homeostasis is also of primary importance; cells maintain pH homeostasis through a host of active and passive transporters to maintain pH balance both inside and outside of the cell.
Events of uncontrolled cellular proliferation, also known as cancer, survive and thrive under conditions that perturb the delicate balance …
Determining The Antibacterial Activity And Mode Of Action Of Tirandamycin, Hailey Bouchard
Determining The Antibacterial Activity And Mode Of Action Of Tirandamycin, Hailey Bouchard
CMC Senior Theses
Tirandamycin is a small molecule natural product that has been isolated from various species of marine and terrestrial Streptomyces. The natural product has shown antibacterial activity against an array of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, showing promise as a pharmaceutical drug. Tirandamycin has 14 known derivatives, many of which have been created synthetically. Some of its derivatives are particularly potent against the high-risk bacteria vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. However, the antibacterial potency of these derivatives has not been tested systematically leading to the possibility of discovering more potent …
Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of C5 Substituted Carbapenem Antibiotics To Counter Resistant Pathogens, Noora Mohammed S.A Al-Kharji
Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of C5 Substituted Carbapenem Antibiotics To Counter Resistant Pathogens, Noora Mohammed S.A Al-Kharji
Chemistry Theses and Dissertations
The 21st century has seen a dramatic acceleration in the evolution of bacterial resistance. Many classes of commercial antibiotics, including most current commercial β-lactams, were structurally optimized to counter 20th century pathogens. The carbapenems represent the most potent and broadest spectrum of the β-lactams, representing crucial last line agents to treat lifethreatening infections. While the 21st century has seen the appearance of carbapenem-resistant strains, the basic substitution pattern of commercial carbapenem antibiotics has remained constant, other than minor modifications at the C2 position. This research will investigate whether substitution at an atypical carbapenem position, the C5 position, can improve the …
Do Paraben Derivatives Alter T Cell Immunity?, Hailey Kintz
Do Paraben Derivatives Alter T Cell Immunity?, Hailey Kintz
Spring Presentation of Undergraduate Research
T cells immunity is linked to a complex system of cytokines that determine differentiation of naïve T cells into Th1, Th2, Th17, and Treg cells. Estrogen production or periods of elevated production have been correlated with an anti-inflammatory state in which Th2 and Treg cells are up-regulated. Such responses in the immune system are capable of supporting pre-cancerous activity. We are investigating the tie between the xenoestrogen compounds found in cosmetics, parabens, and their ability to regulate T cell immunity. Testing parabens and paraben derivatives with weaker estrogen receptor association will allow for a better understanding of the interplay between …
Can A Metallated Cyclen Species Be Used To Prepare New Odorants?, Jalynn Taylor-Farmer
Can A Metallated Cyclen Species Be Used To Prepare New Odorants?, Jalynn Taylor-Farmer
Undergraduate Research Posters
Scientists in the fragrance industry are constantly searching for new odors to create as well as new, more efficient processes to create them. Scientists mainly look for new ways to synthesize fragrances that will reduce the impact on the environment, produce them at lower costs, produce higher yields, and sometimes to produce a more potent odor [4]. In this research, we investigated the use of metallic macrocycles and/or metal-dioxygen chemistry to prepare new fragrances.
Cyclen (1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane) has significant uses in many pharmaceutical and medicinal research developments such as advances in targeted cancer and Alzheimer’s agents. Macrocyclic amines like cyclen are …
