The Role Of Magnesium Supplements In The Management And Prevention Of Headache Disorders, Tatum Schroeder Apr 2026

The Role Of Magnesium Supplements In The Management And Prevention Of Headache Disorders, Tatum Schroeder

Libraries Undergraduate Research Award (LURA) Winners

Much of the global population suffers from headache disorders like migraine. Because there are so many triggers and unknown explanations for migraine, it can be hard to find effective treatments for it. There are some studies that point to inflammation as either a cause or result of headache disorders; therefore, it is natural that we should explore the possibility of inflammation reducing factors when considering treatment options. The factor being explored in this review is magnesium supplementation, which has been shown to reduce inflammation by decreasing the amount of calcitonin-gene-related-peptide (CGRP) in circulation. There is a clear link between migraine …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Polymeric Nanoparticles To Enhance Celleullar Drug Delivery, Rahma Aly Apr 2024

Synthesis And Characterization Of Polymeric Nanoparticles To Enhance Celleullar Drug Delivery, Rahma Aly

Chemistry Theses

Medicines in the form of nanoparticles called nanomedicines, stand at the forefront of revolutionary advancements in healthcare, offering precise drug delivery and diagnostic capabilities. A recent example of nanomedicine in the clinic is the COVID-19 vaccine, which helped prevent death during the pandemic. While the potential benefits are immense, a myriad of challenges complicate their seamless integration into clinical practice. The design and fabrication of nanoparticles demand meticulous attention to biocompatibility and toxicity. Interactions with biological systems are complex, requiring a delicate balance between therapeutic efficacy and safety. The reticuloendothelial system's rapid clearance of nanoparticles, their instability in physiological environments, …

“The Role Of Artificial Intelligence In The Pharmaceutical Field: Enhancing Therapeutic Outcomes And Repurposing Through The Acceleration Of Drug Discovery”, Tonivie Valeriano

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

The development of new drugs and their repurposing have considerably benefited the field of pharmacy. It will not only affect the pharmaceutical sector but also its diverse facets of health will be significantly influenced. Yet, the development of innovative medical treatments necessitated a lengthy period of expectancy for human survival. Individual survival rates were decreasing over time before the development of the treatment. Humanity has a limited lifespan. Moreover, investments in new drugs often go unnoticed because of the prolonged and complex process of drug research and development (R&D). In the future of pharmacy, artificial intelligence will continue to have …

Reducing Unnecessary Acid Suppression Use In Hospitalized Patients: A Description Of Targeted Strategies Implemented Across A Large Health System, Elizabeth H. Wiggins, L. Hayley Burgess, Joan Kramer

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Background

Ensuring the appropriate use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine type 2-receptor antagonists (H2RAs) is an important hospital patient safety and quality initiative because therapy may be inappropriately continued during transitions of care. In this article, we aim to describe the impact of targeted quality improvement strategies to reduce unnecessary acid suppression use in hospitalized patients across a large health system.

Methods

Beginning January 1, 2018, focused quality improvement strategies to prevent unnecessary initiation and continuation of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine type 2-receptor antagonists (H2RAs) were implemented throughout a large health system. Targeted strategies were initially …

Retail Pharmacies And Drug Diversion During The Opioid Epidemic, Aljoscha Janssen, Xuan Zhang Jan 2023

Retail Pharmacies And Drug Diversion During The Opioid Epidemic, Aljoscha Janssen, Xuan Zhang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This study investigates the role of retail pharmacy ownership in the opioid epidemic. Using data of prescription opioid orders, we show that compared with chain pharmacies, independent pharmacies dispense 39.1% more opioids and 60.5% more OxyContin. After an independent pharmacy becomes a chain pharmacy, opioid dispensing decreases. Using the OxyContin reformulation, which reduced non-medical demand but not the legitimate medical demand, we show that at least a third of the difference in the amount of OxyContin dispensed can be attributed to non-medical demand. We show that differences in competitive pressure and whether pharmacists own the pharmacy drive our estimates.
