Analysis Of D- And L- Isomers Of (Meth)Amphetamine In Human K2edta Plasma, Brian Robbins, Jacob Perry, Mary Long, Rob E. Carpenter Jan 2023

Analysis Of D- And L- Isomers Of (Meth)Amphetamine In Human K2edta Plasma, Brian Robbins, Jacob Perry, Mary Long, Rob E. Carpenter

Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

Methamphetamine and its metabolite amphetamine are frequently abused drugs. Whether obtained legally or from clandestine laboratories it is of relevance to determine the chiral makeup of these drugs for investigative purpose. Although urine and oral fluid matrices are commonly offered, less available to independent laboratories are techniques to verify dextro (D-) or levo (L-) (meth)amphetamine from human K2EDTA plasma. This paper outlines the development and validation of a method that includes the addition of internal standard and a two-step liquid-liquid extraction to remove the analytes from human K2EDTA plasma by triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The assay was validated according …

Electromechanical Effects On Micro And Nano Particles Generated From Drug Delivery Devices And Their Implications In Flow And Deposition Efficiency, Mohammed Ali, Mark Miller Nov 2022

Electromechanical Effects On Micro And Nano Particles Generated From Drug Delivery Devices And Their Implications In Flow And Deposition Efficiency, Mohammed Ali, Mark Miller

Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This experimental investigation was undertaken to quantify the electrostatic charge and aerodynamic size distribution of the medicinal drug particles inhaled through an in-vitro mouth-throat (MT) in order to compare the amount of drugs can be delivered to the human lung while mimicking a patient is either sitting or lying. The MT model is a cadaver-based replica cast of human oral-pharyngeal-laryngeal region. Tested drug aerosols were generated by a commercially available metered dose inhaler (MDI). The MT model was placed inside a humidity (95%) and temperature (37oC) controlled chamber. Its mouth-inlet was positioned horizontally and vertically to simulate sitting …

Toward The Total Synthesis Of Dragonamide E And Its Potential Medicinal Application Against Leishmaniasis, Nathaniel M. Smith Jul 2021

Toward The Total Synthesis Of Dragonamide E And Its Potential Medicinal Application Against Leishmaniasis, Nathaniel M. Smith

Chemistry Theses

Leishmaniasis is one of the world’s most neglected tropical diseases, with hundreds of thousands of cases occurring worldwide annually. The disease originates from being infected by protozoa of the Leishmania genus, which are parasites that destroy mammalian cells as part of their life cycle. Currently utilized treatment strategies for leishmaniasis have many disadvantages, warranting the search for a new leishmaniasis treatment.

Cyanobacteria have been discovered to synthesize a wide variety of cytotoxic chemicals as part of their own defense mechanism. One strain of cyanobacteria, Lyngbya majuscula, produces several families of compounds, one of which is known as the “dragonamides”. …

Opioid Dependency And Its Effects On Alcohol Consumption, Emily V. Flores Aug 2020

Opioid Dependency And Its Effects On Alcohol Consumption, Emily V. Flores

Psychology and Counseling Theses

Previous research has found dualistic effects on alcohol consumption with low doses of buprenorphine increasing alcohol and higher doses of buprenorphine reducing alcohol consumption in rats (Ciccocioppo et al., 2006). Other existing research on naloxone treatment and alcohol consumption in opioid use has demonstrated that alcohol consumption decreases after naloxone treatment in rats (Hyytia & Sinclair, 1993). Yet, no research has been conducted on either rats or humans on the effects of buprenorphine and naloxone medication combined. The effects of opioid maintenance therapy are controversial and the relationship between alcohol consumption and opioid dependency treatment is mainly based on literature …
