Beyond Lipid-Lowering: Pleiotropic Effects Of Statins In Inflammation, Coagulation, And Cell Proliferation – Mechanisms And Clinical Implications, Kasidid Lawongsa, Yutthana Pansuwan, Supanut Kumjan
Chulalongkorn Medical Journal
Statins are widely used lipid-lowering agents that significantly reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality through inhibition of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase. Beyond their cholesterol-lowering properties, increasing evidence demonstrates that statins exert several pleiotropic effects independent of lipid reduction. These effects include anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, and anti-proliferative actions mediated primarily through inhibition of the mevalonate pathway and downstream signaling molecules such as Rho, Rac, and Ras. Experimental and clinical studies have suggested potential benefits of statins in various non-cardiovascular conditions, including autoimmune diseases, venous thromboembolism, sepsis-associated coagulopathy, and certain malignancies. In addition, pharmacoepidemiologic studies have provided insights into the real-world effects and …
Machine Learning-Based Gene Signature Detection Highlights Cxcl12 As A Key Marker For Aml Prediction, Selahattin Alperen Uysal, Burçin Kaymaz
Machine Learning-Based Gene Signature Detection Highlights Cxcl12 As A Key Marker For Aml Prediction, Selahattin Alperen Uysal, Burçin Kaymaz
Chulalongkorn Medical Journal
Background: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a severe hematologic malignancy marked by uncontrolled proliferation and impaired differentiation of myeloid cells, disrupting normal hematopoiesis and resulting in poor clinical outcomes. Conventional diagnostic approaches often lack the precision to accurately classify AML subtypes, necessitating the integration of advanced computational methods to improve diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
Objectives: This study aimed to apply machine learning (ML) techniques to transcriptomic data in order to identify a concise and informative gene signature capable of distinguishing AML cases from normal samples. Additionally, the study sought to evaluate the performance of predictive models in supporting AML prediction …
Impostor Phenomenon, Mental Health Status And Coping Strategies Among Medical Students In Southern Thailand, Napakhawarat Buathong
Impostor Phenomenon, Mental Health Status And Coping Strategies Among Medical Students In Southern Thailand, Napakhawarat Buathong
Chulalongkorn Medical Journal
Background: Impostor phenomenon is an internal experience in successful individuals who realize that their achievements are unintended, although their successes can be proven by objective evidence. The study of impostor phenomenon among medical students remains largely unexplored in Thailand, especially during the transitional period from traditional medical training to online training due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Objectives: To determine the prevalence of impostor phenomenon, mental health and the coping strategies as well as to examine the factors related to impostor phenomenon among Thai medical students.
Methods: Two hundred and seventy-two subjects completed online questionnaires enquiring about sociodemographic characteristics and perception …
Caffeine Addiction And Mental Health Of Employees In An Organization In Bangkok, Rasmon Kalayasiri
Caffeine Addiction And Mental Health Of Employees In An Organization In Bangkok, Rasmon Kalayasiri
Chulalongkorn Medical Journal
Background: Heavy caffeine consumption is the cause of caffeine addiction that might affect sleep quality and mental health. However, people, especially employees in various companies, may want to gain daily energy for efficient work and productivity by drinking high number of caffeinated beverages such as coffee.
Objectives: To explore coffee consumption, mental health, sleep quality, and factors related to caffeine addiction among employees.
Methods: A total of 321 employees at a company in Bangkok were asked about their demographics, coffee consumption and caffeine addiction by using newly developed instruments, namely Caffeine Addiction Questionnaire. Depression and sleep quality were assessed by …
A Quantitative Enhancement Characterization Of Hyperfunctioning Parathyroid Lesions On Four-Dimensional Ct Scans, Netsiri Dumrongpisutikul
A Quantitative Enhancement Characterization Of Hyperfunctioning Parathyroid Lesions On Four-Dimensional Ct Scans, Netsiri Dumrongpisutikul
Chulalongkorn Medical Journal
Background: Approximately 20.0% of hyperfunctioning parathyroid lesions do not exhibit typical enhancement characteristics on Four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT). The two main mimics of hyperfunctioning parathyroid lesions are thyroid tissue and lymph nodes.
Objective: The study aimed to characterize enhancement patterns of hyperfunctioning parathyroid lesions on four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) and to differentiate hyperfunctioning parathyroid lesions from thyroid gland and lymph node.
Methods: This retrospective study included analysis of 47 hyperfunctioning parathyroid lesions either pathologically proven or uptake on Tc99m-sestamibi SPECT-CT. The attenuation of hyperfunctioning parathyroid lesions, thyroid glands, lymph nodes and muscles at non-contrast, arterial phase and delayed phase were …
Analysis Of Breast Mri Performed On Patients With Axillary Nodal Metastasis And Negative Mammogram And Ultrasound, Palita Hansakul
Analysis Of Breast Mri Performed On Patients With Axillary Nodal Metastasis And Negative Mammogram And Ultrasound, Palita Hansakul
Chulalongkorn Medical Journal
Background: Occult breast cancer is a rare type of breast cancer which magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has an immense role to confirm diagnosis and disclose non-demonstrable finding on initial modality. Objectives: To analyge breast MRI findings in patients with axillary nodal metastasis and negative mammo gram and ultrasound and retrospectively review the initial mammography and second-look ultrasound. Methods: From January 2010 to January 2023, women who diagnosed occult breast cancer by presenting metastatic axillary lymph node on pathological report with negative mammography and ultrasonography, underwent breast MRI to identify occult breast carcinoma. Their breast MRI were retrospectively reviewed. The imaging …
