A Clustering Of Childhood Meningococcal Disease: A Challenge For Physicians, Press And Community., Michael S. Dreyer, Stephen C. Eppes, Joel D. Klein

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

The Delaware Division of Public Health reported only two cases of documented meningococcal infection in the pediatric population in 1992. As of March 1, 1993, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report indicated only one case of meningococcal disease in the state of Delaware for 1993. However, from the end of February to early April 1993, approximately six weeks, there were seven cases of documented meningococcal infection in the pediatric population that either presented or were transferred to one of the pediatric care facilities in the Wilmington, Delaware area. Notification of these cases to the Delaware Division of Public Health prompted …

Ochrobactrum Anthropi Bacteremia In A Child., Joel D. Klein, Stephen C. Eppes

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Children undergoing chemotherapy for cancer are at increased risk of supervening infection, including bacteremia. This may be due to immunosuppression as well as the presence of intravascular devices such as central venous catheters. Bacteria responsible for these infections include those found in the child's endogenous flora as well as in environmental sources. We report the case of a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who developed bacteremia secondary to Ochrobactrum anthropi. Details of this extremely rare infection are the focus of this report.

This paper considers current medical and legal perspectives on patients' right to assistance in dying. In highlighting the competing policy objectives that must be resolved, it examines failed legislative initiatives in Washington and California. It also considers a pending New Hampshire proposal. The last shows the difficulty of simultaneously alleviating physician's objections and achieving proponents' goals.

The 80's was a decade of remarkable and innovative research and development of alternatives. We see the 90’s as the decade of validation and implementation.

From an activist's perspective, the 80's was very encouraging,-- alternatives gained acceptance, legitimacy and credibility within the toxicology, corporate and regulatory communities. And The Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) at Johns Hopkins University played a significant role in making this acceptance possible.

But these new technologies have yet to realize their full potential; the focus to date has been on development more than on bringing these technologies into routine usage. And the public, …

The Exclusion Of Pregnant, Pregnable, And Once-Pregnable People (A.K.A. Women) From Biomedical Research, Vanessa Merton

The barriers to women's participation as subjects in biomedical research are currently being challenged as a matter of legislative policy, medicine, and law. This Article catalogs the ways in which women have been disadvantaged by their exclusion and recent developments to redress them, and goes on to dissect the underlying rationales for excluding women from clinical trials. The author reveals the 'fundamental misconception' behind exclusionary rationales, and argues that research sponsors in fact have more to fear in the way of potential liability from the exclusion of women, even pregnant women and women of child-bearing capacity, than from their inclusion. …

In the United States, as well as throughout the world, current demands for organ transplants far exceed the actual supply. Nonconsensual human donations, taken from minors, incompetents and prisoners are regulated carefully by the courts. The Uniform Anatomical Gift Act and the National Organ Transplant Act serve also as statutory frameworks for organ retrievals and allocations and place various restrictions upon each. Altruistically motivated donations at death continue to be an inadequate mechanism for meeting the growing demands of the market.
