The Distribution And Possible Significance Of Glycoconjugates In Retinal Development, Ajit Joseph Alles

The neural retina is a structure that develops from a simple neuroepithelium into a complex neural organ. The histochemistry of this structure has been studied for many years by scientists using various techniques. In this study, lectin histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and experimental manipulations of retinal cell types have been used in an attempt to clarify the distribution of saccharide moieties in glycoconjugates during retinal development in the rat, the rabbit and the chick. With these methods of investigation we have demonstrated that glycoconjugate patterns vary during development and have also demonstrated the presence of several interesting glycan moieties.
