Giant Cell Arteritis: A Case Study And Review Of Treatment, Andrew Di Mattina Od, Jeffrey Sterling Od, Heather Whyte Od
Giant Cell Arteritis: A Case Study And Review Of Treatment, Andrew Di Mattina Od, Jeffrey Sterling Od, Heather Whyte Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common vasculitis affecting individuals over 50, and frequently leads to severe ischemic complications, most notably irreversible vision loss. Early diagnosis and prompt, aggressive treatment with corticosteroids is paramount to protect the fellow eye. The multifaceted clinical presentation of GCA, sometimes with atypical or sequential ocular involvement, can pose significant diagnostic challenges. This paper reviews current understanding of GCA pathophysiology, diagnosis, and current management strategies.
Case Report: A 70‑year‑old man presented with “cracked glass” vision in his right eye and was diagnosed with a branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO). Two weeks later he …

Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: Outer foveal microdefects (OFMDs) are small focal photoreceptor interruptions that often present with minimal symptoms and are best identified using optical coherence tomography (OCT).
Case Series: This report describes three cases of outer foveal microdefects discovered incidentally during routine eye examinations.
Conclusion: These cases highlight the importance of OCT in detecting subtle macular abnormalities that may be missed on clinical examination.

Many preoperative and postoperative cataract patients struggle with comprehending the use of prescription medication as directed. Language barriers and low health literacy levels are major factors contributing to improper use of prescriptions. To increase patients comprehension, the Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute employed an educational intervention consisting of a live presentation and an instructional video. Results found that 44% of patients were hesitant to ask questions to clinical staff, 32% felt overwhelmed, and nearly 70% lacked confidence in using their prescribed eye drops. Following the intervention, 91% of patients reported increased confidence in their medications, and most indicated that the video …
The Digital Glow: Effects Of Blue Light On Children And The Development Of A Children's Book To Raise Awareness On Eye Health, Mallory Easland
The Digital Glow: Effects Of Blue Light On Children And The Development Of A Children's Book To Raise Awareness On Eye Health, Mallory Easland
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
As digital screen use continues to rise among children, concerns about the effects of blue light on eye health, sleep patterns, and overall well-being have grown. Research suggests that prolonged exposure to blue light can contribute to digital eye strain, disrupt circadian rhythms, and impact cognitive development. This thesis explores scientific literature on the biological effects of blue light, specifically on children, examining both the risks associated with excessive exposure and strategies for mitigating its impact.
In addition to conducting a comprehensive literature review, this project applies research findings to the creation of an educational children’s book aimed at promoting …

A corneal transplant, also called keratoplasty or corneal grafting, is a type of surgery where damaged or diseased corneal tissue is replaced by a healthy donor cornea. The first successful corneal transplant was performed in 1905 by Dr. Eduard Zirm, but since then, surgical advancements have developed greatly, leading to more beneficial outcomes. Corneal blindness is a major form of reversible blindness that is manageable with healthy donor cornea transplantation. Other recipients or possible candidates for corneal transplantation include those with keratoconus, Fuchs’ dystrophy, eye infections, or eye injuries. This remarkable surgery is now one of the most common transplant …

OTD Capstone Projects
Blind Early Services Tennessee (BEST) is an early intervention agency that serves children ages 0-5 with visual impairments across Tennessee. BEST serves over 200 children and families across the state offering early intervention (BEST Start), parent empowerment (BEST Advocate), and family support (BEST Together) programming. The purpose of this project was to assist in the implementation of an early identification initiative (BEST Screening) using the Neonatal Assessment Visual European Grid (NAVEG). The NAVEG is a newborn vision screening shown to identify neurological risk for visual impairments. The long-term goal of this program is to promote the screening and early identification …

Background: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common eyelid malignancy, accounting for approximately 90% of malignant eyelid lesions.1 Despite its high occurrence rates, it is frequently misdiagnosed as one of the benign “lumps and bumps” that can be present on the eyelid. In the present case, a patient with a past BCC on the right upper eyelid presented with a left lower eyelid lesion which persisted for months before the patient sought evaluation by an eyecare provider. This benign-looking lash-line lesion was the only external sign of the malignancy found on the deep surface of the eyelid and …
Determining Age-Related Visual Memory And Line Length Perception In Children And Adults, Katie Exline
Determining Age-Related Visual Memory And Line Length Perception In Children And Adults, Katie Exline
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
There is little research in the field of visual memory and perceptual abilities of children as compared to adults. This thesis seeks to understand and provide new perspectives to this field with potential implications in the fields of optometry and education. Through two basic experiments, this thesis evaluates the abilities of individuals to perceive a visual stimulus and compare it other visual stimuli, while also observing their abilities to learn and remember various visual stimuli. Through experimentation using line length as the visual stimulus, the method of constant stimuli (MCS) evaluates subjects’ visual perception and the method of single stimuli …
