Background: Minimal access surgeries are growing more common in neonatal care, but the risk of accidental injury to abdominal wall blood vessels remains a concern. This risk is increased by limited precise anatomical data specific to neonates. Therefore, this study aimed to quantitatively map the superficial and deep blood vessels of the neonatal anterior abdominal wall concerning important surgical landmarks to develop evidence-based recommendations for safer laparoscopic port placement. Methods: Thirty formalin-fixed low-birth-weight neonatal body donations (≤4 weeks old) were dissected. Background: Exposure to open vascular case is declining in surgical training, creating a need for standardized, objective assessment of fundamental open skills. The Association of Program Directors in Vascular Surgery developed the Fundamentals of Vascular Surgery (FVS) curriculum to teach and assess three core skills—end-to-side anastomosis, patch angioplasty, and clockface precision suturing. This study describes FVS development and validation, nationwide rollout, and early implementation experience across U.S. training programs. Background: The mortality of cardiac conditions in infancy is improving with advances in surgical planning and medical management. Neurologic morbidity remains significant. Clinically correlating an infant with their neurologic exam, MRI/EEG, and subsequent developmental testing remains a challenge. Counseling regarding neurologic outcomes after cardiac intervention is difficult due to the wide range of findings that can sometimes be clinically irrelevant.

Heterotaxy-polysplenia syndrome (otherwise known as left atrial isomerism) should be suspected in the presence of complete atrioventricular canal defect (CAVC) with interruption of the inferior vena cava (IVC), atrioventricular block (AVB), and viscero-cardiac heterotaxy. The prognosis remains dismal for the fetus with such entity, especially in the presence of major structural heart disease and high-grade atrioventricular block. Early diagnosis, close follow up, and appropriate delivery planning, allows for effective stabilization of the baby after birth and might improve survival.

Cardiac auscultation is a critical part of clinical examination. Stethoscope allows for early detection of numerous important cardiac pathologies and appropriate referral for further management. Improper use of stethoscopes leads to inappropriate referral resulting in unnecessary financial stress or a delay in proper treatment of time-sensitive pathologies like VSD in children. Multiple studies have documented that competency among medical professionals in cardiac auscultation skills is in steady decline and this is due to the ineffective teaching method of cardiac auscultation starting in medical school.

E-learning, also known as computer-assisted learning, successfully bridges anatomical knowledge and transferrable skills, such as critical analysis, teamwork, leadership and communication. Several institutions have already integrated histology and physiology in team based laboratory approaches, but integration of histology and pathology instruction has been done to a lesser extent. Our aim was to develop an e-learning atlas that integrates microanatomy and pathology laboratory for an interdisciplinary pre-clinical medical curriculum.
