Two species of peracarid malacostracans, a mysid, Neomysis americana, and an oniscid isopod, Trachelipus cf. rathkei, were used to study the skeletomusculature system. Serial sections, whole mounts, and gross dissections were made. Coxal promotors and remotors and basal adductors and abductors were the muscle groups examined.

The promotor and remotor muscles of N. americana were found to be numerous, well developed, taking origin primarily from the dorsal thoracic wall, and extending nearly ventrally to insert in the coxa; the adductor muscle and two abductor muscles are weakly developed. In order to obtain proper muscle development in tissue culture, certain conditions must prevail. There is a delicate balance of factors, and elimination of even one of these factors leads to poor and improper development. Muscle cells grown in the absence of fibroblasts usually fail to differentiate. Therefore, proper development depends upon the presence of two cell types: myoblasts and fibroblasts. Investigators have demonstrated that the fibroblasts are necessary in that they produce collagen which is necessary for proper muscle development. The Biodegradability Of Detergents And The Effects Of Biodegradable Detergents Upon Root Elongation Of Certain Plants, Nancy Lou Bishop

The effects of three biodegradable detergents upon root elongation of Cucumis sativus and Avena sativa was determined. All three detergents inhibit root elongation; the degree of inhibition depends on the brand of detergent and the species tested. Contact of the detergents with a sandy-loam results in reversal of inhibition of root elongation; the degree of reversal varies with detergent and species. However, reversal after 48 hours contact with soil does not appear to be due to degradation by microorganisms. Effects of aeration and of pH on test solutions are discussed.

Kinetic Studies Of The Cell Elongation Phenomenon In Etiolated Pisum Stem Segments, Grant M. Barkley

The short-term growth response of etiolated pea stem segments (Pisum sativum L., var. Alaska) was investigated using a high-resolution growth recording device. The immediate effect of treatment with indoleacetic acid (IAA) is an inhibition of growth. This inhibition lasts about 10 minutes and then the rate of elongation rises abruptly to a new steady rate about 4 times the rate of elongation before auxin treatment. This rapid steady rate of elongation, however, continues for only about 22 minutes before declining suddenly to a lower steady rate of growth about 2 times the rate of elongation before the addition of auxin. …
