A Proof Of Concept For Detection Of Palato-Lingual Contact Without Intraoral Electrodes In A Human Participant, Amitava Biswas
A Proof Of Concept For Detection Of Palato-Lingual Contact Without Intraoral Electrodes In A Human Participant, Amitava Biswas
Master's Theses
The author of this thesis conceived and investigated an unexpected electrical signal that may not be noticed during regular electroglottography (EGG) when electrodes are conventionally placed on the anterior surface of the throat. It appears that there is a measurable electrical signal from the EGG equipment when electrodes are placed over the frontal cheek (belly of zygomatic muscle), and the tongue is elevated to contact the hard palate, or the tongue is lowered to break the contact. Therefore, this phenomenon is designated as unconventional electroglottography (UEGG, Dr. Steven Cloud, private communication, July 17, 2022).

The Relationships Among Proprioception, Balance, And Cognitive Perception Of Body Awareness In College Students, Courtney Helmick
The Relationships Among Proprioception, Balance, And Cognitive Perception Of Body Awareness In College Students, Courtney Helmick
Honors College Theses
Introduction: Proprioception is an important physiological function that is essential for activities of daily living as well as exercise and sport performance. Integration of proprioceptive signals plays a key role in both static and dynamic balance. Previously, researchers have assessed the relationship between balance and proprioception, however, the effect of cognitive perception of body awareness has not previously been included in this research. The aim of this pilot study was to explore the relationships among lower extremity proprioception, dynamic balance, and cognitive perception of body awareness in college students.
Methods: Nineteen apparently healthy college students (age 21.26 ± 1.10 years, …

Comparison Of Covid-19 Diagnostic Testing Methodologies In The U.S., Joseph Blommel
Comparison Of Covid-19 Diagnostic Testing Methodologies In The U.S., Joseph Blommel
All Dissertations
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought about a world in which diagnostic testing for the virus that is responsible for COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, became commonplace. Diagnostic testing was required for myriad reasons beyond simple diagnosis. We set out to compare SARS-CoV-2 testing methods, see if differences sensitivity correlated to increased positivity, and to evaluate self-collection methods.
In examining the Limit of Detection (LoD) of tests receiving FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA), our findings indicated that there were considerable differences in LoD. However, these differences in observed sensitivity were not correlated with the methodologic differences as reported in EUA documentation.

Anti-Factor Xa Level Monitoring For Enoxaparin Prophylaxis And Treatment In High-Risk Patient Groups, Lucie Sikes, Kipson Charles, Abigail Antigua, Rima Patel, Selina Imboywa, Pheba Cherian
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Monitoring anti-factor Xa levels is a controversial topic in the inpatient setting due to resource utilization and unclear conditional guideline recommendations regarding this practice. Enoxaparin dosing in certain high-risk patient populations such as those with low body weight, obesity, renal insufficiency, and pregnancy has not been determined. The objective of this review was to assess the safety and efficacy of enoxaparin monitoring via anti-factor Xa levels in high-risk patient populations.
The PubMed database was searched for articles related to low-molecular-weight heparin monitoring. Randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses that evaluated the safety and efficacy of enoxaparin prophylaxis and treatment in patients …

Effects Of Coordinated Reset Deep Brain Stimulation Of Subthalamic Nucleus On Parkinsonian Gait In The Non-Human Primate Model, Kanon Nakajima
Effects Of Coordinated Reset Deep Brain Stimulation Of Subthalamic Nucleus On Parkinsonian Gait In The Non-Human Primate Model, Kanon Nakajima
Neuroscience Honors Projects
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects over 10 million people worldwide. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) has been a successful treatment for advanced PD, however, can be accompanied with current spread related side effects. Coordinated Reset (CR) DBS is a novel therapeutic approach that could reduce the risk of side-effects by using lower current. Previous research has shown therapeutic effects of CR DBS on PD motor symptoms including akinesia, bradykinesia, rigidity, and tremor that sustained after stimulation cessation (i.e., carryover effect), however its effect on gait dysfunction is unknown even though it can be one of the most …
Where Do We Draw The Line? The Ethical Dilemma Involved In Genetic Engineering And Gene Therapy, Amber Schrag
Where Do We Draw The Line? The Ethical Dilemma Involved In Genetic Engineering And Gene Therapy, Amber Schrag
Senior Honors Theses
Genetic engineering and gene therapy are greatly disputed in our time. With the advancement of technology, one has the power to manipulate genes in the body, which raises the questions: What is our role in this? Is there a limit to this power, or should there be? This paper reviews the uses of this technology and evaluates the ethics from a scientific and Biblical point of view. It is concluded that using gene therapy to help cure diseases is very beneficial in both the scientific and Biblical realm as it is restoring individuals back to health and wholeness.
Efficacy Of Kidney Reperfusion Treatments Relative To Function And Survival Rates After Transplantation, Mitchell Rohr
Efficacy Of Kidney Reperfusion Treatments Relative To Function And Survival Rates After Transplantation, Mitchell Rohr
Senior Honors Theses
Donor kidneys are damaged upon circulatory death before being preserved with machine perfusion until transplantation. During machine perfusion, blood is pumped back into the vasculature of the kidney, causing damage called ischemic reperfusion injury. The two forms of machine perfusion are hypothermic machine perfusion and normothermic machine perfusion. Different methods of treatment can be used during either hypothermic machine perfusion or normothermic machine perfusion to prevent ischemic reperfusion injury. Each of the treatment methods that were reviewed showed potential for preventing ischemic reperfusion injury, with hypothermic treatments having higher average levels of feasibility than normothermic treatments. The effect of the …

Post-Partum Depression (Ppd) Screening Tools Effectiveness In Refugee Populations, Joshua Jensen
Annual Research Symposium
Purpose:
Immigrant mothers check all the boxes that are significant risk factors for developing or exacerbating Postpartum Depression (PPD). These risk factors include, suffering in solitude, cultural conceptualizations, barriers to help seeking, and a lack of facilitators to help seeking. Despite this very little research has been done to find effective screening methods for this population.
The purpose of this research project is to compile the works of those before me to determine whether the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression or the PHQ 9 screening tool is the most effective for immigrant mothers.
Methods:
Research determining the effectivity of the two tests …

The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections
During the first two years of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, nasopharyngeal (NP) specimens were the gold standard for clinical diagnostic testing. As information about the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causing the pandemic continued to be shared, it was clear that the virus could be detected in other specimen types during an active infection. The University of Louisville Infectious Diseases Laboratory accepted non-traditional specimen types, most without a paired, positive NP result, for research purposes only to support local epidemiology efforts. A real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay originally validated for NP specimens was used …

The locus and extent of brain damage in the event of vascular insult can be quantitatively established quickly and easily with vascular atlases. Although highly anticipated by clinicians and clinical researchers, no digital MRI arterial atlas is readily available for automated data analyses. We created a digital arterial territory atlas based on lesion distributions in 1,298 patients with acute stroke. The lesions were manually traced in the diffusion-weighted MRIs, binary stroke masks were mapped to a common space, probability maps of lesions were generated and the boundaries for each arterial territory was defined based on the ratio between probabilistic maps. …

Higher Sexual Excitation Is Associated With An Increase In Sex-Linked Substance Use In Women With A History Of Unwanted Sexual Contact, Harper R. Jones, Tierney K. Lorenz
Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications
Survivors of unwanted sexual contact have an increased likelihood of using substances in sexual situations, which puts them at heightened risk for intoxication-related harms. Separately, research has indicated that women may intentionally use substances in sexual situations to either enhance pleasure (i.e., increase sexual excitation) and/or reduce sexual anxiety or shame (i.e., reduce sexual inhibition), a phenomenon termed sex-linked substance use (SLSU). A predominant assumption in the literature is that women with unwanted sex histories are more likely to disengage during sex, suggesting greater inhibition-related SLSU; however, there is little prior research directly examining if women who have unwanted sex …

Concussions present with a myriad of symptomatic and cognitive concerns; however, the relationship between these functional disruptions and the underlying changes in the brain are not yet well understood. Hubs, or brain regions that are connected to many different functional networks, may be specifically disrupted after concussion. Given the implications in concussion research, we quantified hub disruption within the default mode network (DMN) and between the DMN and other brain networks. We collected resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from collegiate student-athletes (n = 44) at three timepoints: baseline (prior to beginning their athletic season), acute post-injury (approximately 48 hours …

Dogs have a special place in human history as the first domesticated species and play important roles in many cultures around the world. However, their role in scientific studies has been relatively recent. With a few notable exceptions (e.g., Darwin, Pavlov, Scott, and Fuller), domestic dogs were not commonly the subject of rigorous scientific investigation of behavior until the late 1990s. Although the number of canine science studies has increased dramatically over the last 20 years, most research groups are limited in the inferences they can draw because of the relatively small sample sizes used, along with the exceptional diversity …
Combining Novel Direction Modulated Brachytherapy Tandem-And-Ovoids Applicators For Treatment Planning Of Multi-Institutional Cervical Cancer Cases: Removing Needles In Intracavitary-Interstitial Techniques, Sharmin Alam
Theses and Dissertations
Lack of standard guidelines for optimal needle insertion during high-dose-rate (HDR) intracavitary-interstitial (IC-IS) brachytherapy of the cervix means a sophisticated and technical skillset of inserting needles next to IC applicators must be developed to enhance plan quality. This study sought to evaluate the performance of two separate direction modulated brachytherapy (DMBT) tandem applicators used in conjunction with one set of novel DMBT ovoids, to effectively obviate the need for IS needles.
A cohort of 32 retrospective clinical HDR brachytherapy plans was re-planned with Varian’s BrachyVision® treatment planning system, using VEGO® inverse optimization algorithm, with dose heterogeneity accounted for …

Hrmobile: A Lightweight, Local Architecture For Heart Rate Measurement, Sam Morton, Sam Morton
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV) are important metrics in the study of numerous physical and psychiatric conditions. Previously, measurement of heart rate was relegated to clinical settings, and was neither convenient nor captured a patient’s typical resting state. In effect, this made gathering heart rate data costly and introduced noise. The current prevalence of mobile phone technology and Internet access has increased the viability of remote health monitoring, thus presenting an opportunity to substantially improve the speed, convenience, and reliability of heart rate readings. Recent attention has focused on different methods for remote, non-contact heart rate measurement. Of …

Using Data And Evidence To Improve Quality Of Life For Patients With Alzheimer’S Disease, Ying Wang
2023
As an irreversible, progressive brain disorder, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) imposes a severe burden upon patients and their caregivers, as well as the healthcare system. Of the ten leading causes of death in the United States, Alzheimer’s disease is the only one without a pharmacological intervention that has been proven to cure or delay the onset of the disease. Aging is the primary risk factor contributing to Alzheimer’s disease in the elderly. With an aging population that continues to grow, the challenges for the healthcare system surrounding AD become more and more serious. My dissertation aims to contribute to a better …

Radiology departments have contributed significantly to greenhouse gases including release of toxic imaging contrast media to environment. We feel Radiology also has several spectroscopy and imaging tools that may apply to monitor and support cleaner environmental goals. The current manuscript is one of the firsts to prompt Radiology to move in that direction by non invasive imaging of bio metals that are less abundant in biological tissues but play key roles as co-factors in tissue structure and function. Conventional analytical tools are mostly invasive and cannot characterize the native oxidation states of bio metals. We chose carbohydrate matrix of metal-rich …
