Cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) is emerging as a clinically relevant therapy for dermatological conditions such as actinic keratosis, warts, and chronic wounds. However, these therapies lack strategies to monitor CAP delivery in situ and to ensure delivery of an effective CAP dose without unwanted toxicity. CAP acts as a therapeutic agent in these biomedical applications primarily (but not solely) through reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) generated at transiently high local concentrations. Music influences emotion, physiology, and cognition, yet little is known about how the frequency it is tuned to affects these influences. Prior research has shown that music tuned to 432 Hz can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve sleep. My colleagues and I conducted two studies to investigate this. Our research found that music tuned to 432 Hz promotes a significant increase in memory retention and induces a state of focus and relaxation. These results suggest that shifting from the standard tuning frequency of 440 Hz to 432 Hz could have a profoundly positive impact on our daily lives. …

Many preoperative and postoperative cataract patients struggle with comprehending the use of prescription medication as directed. Language barriers and low health literacy levels are major factors contributing to improper use of prescriptions. To increase patients comprehension, the Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute employed an educational intervention consisting of a live presentation and an instructional video. Results found that 44% of patients were hesitant to ask questions to clinical staff, 32% felt overwhelmed, and nearly 70% lacked confidence in using their prescribed eye drops. Following the intervention, 91% of patients reported increased confidence in their medications, and most indicated that the video …

We describe a patient who underwent AV node modification to create complete heart block in the setting of incessant, ablation-and-drug-refractory, symptomatic atypical atrial flutter. His dual chamber defibrillator (previously implanted for resuscitated cardiac arrest) was programmed to the VVIR mode at a faster pacing rate of 85 bpm. Serendipitously, this rate was an almost exact factorial of his flutter rate of 250-260 bpm. This resulted in every 6th flutter wave falling in the supernormal period, resulting in fixed-coupled supraventricular bigeminy and trigeminy in the setting of complete heart block. Reprogramming the pacing rate to 75 bpm abolished bigeminy and trigeminy.

The third-generation left ventricular assist device (3G-LVAD) has significantly reduced adverse events and hospitalizations compared with previous generations. This case presents a rare 3G-LVAD rotor dislodgement malfunction, not previously documented, in a 77-year-old man. Further research behind the malfunction is warranted for early prevention and appropriate management.

Oncolytic virotherapy has shown great promise in mediating targeted tumor destruction through tumor-selective replication and induction of anti-tumor immunity; however, obstacles remain for virus candidates to reach the clinic. BACKGROUND: Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusions (CSIIs) are the current standard treatment devices for type 1 diabetes (T1D) management. With a high prevalence of T1D beginning in pediatrics and carrying into adulthood, insufficient glycemic control leads to poor patient outcomes. We report a case of a 67-year-old male who presented to the emergency department (ED) for palpitations and complaint of his automated implantable cardioverter defibrillator (AICD) firing at home who had multiple episodes of persistent ventricular tachycardia (VT) during his course of stay in the ED. Patients with pacemakers and AICDs can present an additional layer of complexity when treating these conditions. Temporary overdrive pacing (TOP) should be considered as a treatment to correct refractory ventricular tachycardia in patients with implanted pacemakers and AICDs presenting to the ED.

Expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) is increasingly being used to treat voice, cough, and swallowing deficits in a wide range of conditions. However, a multitude of aero-resistive EMST models are commercially available, and the absence of side-by-side comparative data interferes with clinicians’ ability to assess which model is best suited to a particular client’s needs. While naloxone is routinely given in the field to help reduce opiate’s sedating effects, the routine use of flumazenil has not been routinely adopted in cases of benzodiazepine overdose. Introduction

Previously irradiated tissue is characterized by changes including decreased vascularity, impaired cellular proliferation, and local hypoxia consistent with fibroblastic atrophy which can persist long after radiation therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of complications arising from these late effects of radiation on normal tissue through enhancing fibroblast proliferation, collagen maturation, stem cell recruitment, and angiogenesis.

Methods

We report on three patients with debilitating radiation enterocolitis causing issues including recurrent bowel obstruction, anorexia requiring total parenteral nutrition, pain, diarrhea, fecal incontinence, dehydration, and malnutrition.

The current practice of intraoperatively assessing the cuff pressure of the endotracheal tube (ETT) is arbitrary and potentially leads to negative impacts on patients. This best practice project aimed to review and synthesize the existing evidence-based literature on measuring ETT cuff pressure and to establish a policy guideline for anesthesia providers to measure ETT cuff pressure in the intraoperative environment.
