Cerebral Oximetry Readings In The Sitting Position Versus Supine Position For Patients Undergoing General Anesthesia, Christopher Turner
Cerebral Oximetry Readings In The Sitting Position Versus Supine Position For Patients Undergoing General Anesthesia, Christopher Turner
Doctoral Projects
Problem: Inadequate cerebral blood flow is a significant risk for patients undergoing surgery in the sitting position. Placing the patient in a sitting position may cause a drop in pressure at the level of the brain when compounded with induction and maintenance of general anesthesia. These changes may cause a decrease in cerebral blood flow and oxygenation. Inadequate perfusion for a prolonged period of time could produce negative neurological consequences in the short and long term postoperative period.
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to determine if there is a significant drop in cerebral oximetry, from baseline, when patients …
The Effect Of Neurostimulation On Ischemic Pain And Methods Of Assessing Pain, Kaylee Keck
The Effect Of Neurostimulation On Ischemic Pain And Methods Of Assessing Pain, Kaylee Keck
Biomedical Engineering
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) impacts approximately eight million people in the United States [1]. Disease progression leads to chronic ischemic pain, hindering quality of life. Pharmaceuticals are a typical treatment for pain associated with PAD; but as few as 30% of patients have a significant reduction of pain (≥50%) [2].
Neurostimulation is commonly used as a treatment for various diseases and injuries, including Parkinson’s disease and sports-related back and knee injuries [2]. The objective of the study was to explore neurostimulation and its effect on pain and paresthesia for a model of acute peripheral ischemia in young college students.

Role Of Acute Pain Service In Optimizing Postoperative Pain Relief In A Tertiary Care Teaching Hospital, Aliya Ahmed, Muhammad Yasir
Role Of Acute Pain Service In Optimizing Postoperative Pain Relief In A Tertiary Care Teaching Hospital, Aliya Ahmed, Muhammad Yasir
Department of Anaesthesia
Objective: To assess the frequency and types of adjustments that acute pain service makes to postoperative analgesic regimes to improve pain relief or treat side effects. Methods: The prospective observational study was conducted at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, from December 1, 2012, to March 31, 2013. Data was collected from Acute Pain Service register four hours after the pain rounds by a Service member not involved in rounds. Data was collected on a standardised form and analysed using SPSS 19.Results: Of the 323 patients, 209(65%) were receiving epidural infusions and 114(35%) were receiving intravenous patient-controlled analgesia. Overall, 114(35%) required …

Deep brain stimulation in an awake patient presents several unique challenges to the anesthesiologist. It is important to understand the various stages of the procedure and the complexities of anesthetic management in order to have a successful surgical outcome and provide a safe environment for the patient.

This case report describes the anaesthetic management of a patient addicted to Bhang(cannabis) for 20 years. Cannabis use has implication in the anaesthetic management of a patient because of its effects on the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, and central nervous system and its interaction with anaesthetic drugs.

The context of a diagnostic test is a critical component for the interpretation of its result. This context defines the pretest probability of the diagnosis and forms the basis for the interpretation and value of adding the diagnostic test. In the field of acute kidney injury, a multitude of early diagnostic biomarkers have been developed, but utilization in the appropriate context is less well understood and has not been codified until recently. In order to better operationalize the context and pretest probability assessment for acute kidney injury diagnosis, the renal angina concept was proposed in 2010 for use in both …

Background
Chronic pain is common in children and adolescents and is often associated with severe functional disability and mood disorders. The pharmacological treatment of chronic pain in children and adolescents can be challenging, ineffective, and is mostly based on expert opinions and consensus. Ketamine, an N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist, has been used as an adjuvant for treatment of adult chronic pain and has been shown, in some instances, to improve pain and decrease opioid-requirement. We examined the effects of subanesthetic ketamine infusions on pain intensity and opioid use in children and adolescents with chronic pain syndromes treated in an outpatient setting. …
