Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is a kind of lymphatic malignancy distinguished by the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells. It often manifests as painless lymphadenopathy and systemic symptoms (B symptoms and can affect a variety of lymphoid tissues. The causes of HL are complicated and include genetic predisposition, environmental conditions and viral infections, particularly the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). The diagnosis is primarily based on histological evaluation of lymph node samples, with immunophenotyping assisting classification. Herein, we report a case of classical Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL) in an otherwise healthy 31-year-old male who had a mass per abdomen for a year and recently noticed a …

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship
Doxorubicin is an effective, commonly used chemotherapeutic drug. However, this drug is accompanied with disadvantages. Specifically, doxorubicin is associated with cardiotoxicity, characterized by left ventricle dysfunction. We hypothesize that 4D ultrasound imaging can reveal cardiac changes associated with doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity earlier in disease progression than 2D ultrasound imaging. To test this hypothesis, C57BL/6J mice were separated into treatment or control groups. Intraperitoneal injections were administered weekly for 4 weeks, each dosage equivalent to 4 mg/kg of either doxorubicin (treated) or saline (control). A Vevo3100 high frequency ultrasound system (FUJIFILM VisualSonics) was used to collect 2D and 4D ultrasound images of …

Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Faculty Publications
Traumatic brain injury (TBI)-related growth hormone deficiency is often undertreated, despite documented physical, metabolic, and neuropsychiatric effects. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), with neuroreceptors located in brain regions responsible for learning, memory, and mood, regulates cerebral blood flow, neurogenesis, and neuroplasticity. The aim of this study was to determine associations between IGF-1 levels and post-TBI symptom severity, anxiety, and depression. This retrospective observational study at an Academic Brain Injury Center included participants evaluated 3-12 months post-TBI with available IGF-1 values and complete Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ-13), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) responses. Patients under 18 or …

Reducing Colonoscopy Cancellations Saves Lives, A Quality Improvement Project, Jennifer L. Brosnan
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
One of Healthy People 2030’s objectives is to increase the proportion of adults screened for colorectal cancer. To address this objective, a quality improvement project was completed within an Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC). An evidenced-based committee was formed with the primary goal to decrease the number of cancelled colonoscopies. The committee aimed to answer the PICOT question: For patients who cancel their colonoscopy, how does the development and implementation of an evidence-based practice (EBP) committee’s nursing interventions reduce cancelled colonoscopy rates and increase reschedule rates, compared to no implementation of an EBP committee’s nursing interventions, over three months?
Nursing interventions …

Four Overlooked Errors In Roc Analysis: How To Prevent And Avoid, Zhuoqiao He, Qingying Zhang, Manshu Song, Xuerui Tan, Wei Wang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Diagnostic tests are frequently applied within clinical practice to assist with disease diagnosis, differential diagnosis, disease grading and prognosis evaluation. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis is one common approach for analysing discriminative performance of a diagnostic test, where it can determine the optimal cut-off value with the best diagnostic performance.1 However, as a majority of clinicians are non-statisticians, several errors have been observed in clinical research when applying ROC curves. These errors may be misleading in the selection of diagnostic tests and disease diagnosis, thus adding to patient burden. To address these errors, clinicians do not need a …

EVMS School of Health Professions Faculty Publications
[Introduction] Malnutrition and cachexia are common complications in cancer patients, and they negatively influence prognosis, treatment efficacy, and tolerability as well as quality of life [[1], [2], [3]]. Accurately identifying and effectively managing malnutrition and cachexia in this population remains a clinical challenge. Conventional validated screening tools may lack the sensitivity and specificity required for early detection and personalized intervention in diverse cancer types and treatment settings [4,5]. Over the last decade, the use of artificial intelligence (AI), including machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) strategies, has shown promising results in clinical nutrition, with the potential to revolutionize nutritional …

The Anatomy Of A Reconstruction: From Fourier Space To Image Recovery In Computed Tomography, Charlotte P. Maurer
Honors Theses
This thesis develops the mathematical foundations of computed tomography (CT) reconstruction through the lens of harmonic analysis. Beginning with the Schwartz class, we introduce the Fourier transform and its role in expressing the Radon transform and its inversion via a fractional Laplacian. After constructing the Radon transform in general dimension R^d, we specialize to the cases d = 2 and d = 3, demonstrating explicit inversion formulas and the associated instability in lower dimensions. For its computational advantages, we study filtered back-projection using classical low-pass filters (Ram-Lak, Shepp–Logan, Cosine, Gaussian) and formulate a discrete reconstruction algorithm grounded in …

An Analytical Model Of Motion Artifacts In A Measured Arterial Pulse Signal—Part Ii: Tactile Sensors, Md Mahfuzur Rahman, Subodh Toraskar, Mamun Hasan, Zhili Hao
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper, the second of two parts, presents an analytical model of motion artifacts (MA) in measured pulse signals by a tactile sensor, which contains a deformable microstructure sitting on a substrate. While the tissue-contact-sensor (TCS) stack and the sensor are both treated as a 1DOF (degree-of-freedom) system, tissue–sensor contact joins their mass together to form a 1DOF system with springs and dampers on both sides. MA on the sensor substrate causes baseline drift and time-varying system parameters (TVSP) of the TCS stack simultaneously. An analytical model is developed to mathematically relate baseline drift and TVSP to a measured pulse …

Background
Appendicular lean mass index is a major determinant of cardiorespiratory fitness in patients with obesity-related heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Moreover, appendicular lean mass index can be used to diagnose sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity in this population. We aimed to validate the ability of segmental single-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (SF-BIA) to assess body composition compared with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in patients with HFpEF and obesity, with a focus on appendicular lean mass index for its critical role in diagnosing sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity.
Methods
We analyzed 62 euvolemic patients from a heart failure outpatient clinic with …

Why Ai Monitoring Faces Resistance And What Healthcare Organizations Can Do About It: An Emotion-Based Perspective, Karl Werder, Lan Cao, Eun Hee Park, Balasubramaniam Ramesh
Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications
Continuous monitoring of patients' health facilitated by artificial intelligence (AI) has enhanced the quality of health care, that is, the ability to access effective care. However, AI monitoring often encounters resistance to adoption by decision makers. Healthcare organizations frequently assume that the resistance stems from patients' rational evaluation of the technology's costs and benefits. Recent research challenges this assumption and suggests that the resistance to AI monitoring is influenced by the emotional experiences of patients and their surrogate decision makers. We develop a framework from an emotional perspective, provide important implications for healthcare organizations, and offer recommendations to help reduce …

Initiation Of Sterile Vaginal Preps Prior To Cesarean Sections: A Quality Improvement Project, Diane Gilbertson, Timothy Kremer, Kimberly Udell
North Texas Research Forum 2025
OBJECTIVE: Research on patients undergoing routine gynecological procedures with a vaginal preparation has demonstrated a significant reduction in post-operative infections by decreasing the burden of vaginal bacteria. Despite this research, as well as evidence that they reduce postpartum endometritis, especially in labor patients or those with ruptured membranes (Lui), vaginal preparations prior to cesarean section are not standard practice. Prior to the initiation of this quality improvement project, no patients delivering at Medical City Arlington received a vaginal preparation prior to a cesarean delivery. The goal of this quality improvement project is to improve clinical care, patient safety, and healthcare …

Improving Communication And Follow Up For Incidental Findings From Panscan Imaging, Makenzie Morrissey, Kristen Payne, Randall Rittmann, Chris Robert, Joseph Lim, Danielle Pigneri
North Texas Research Forum 2025
OBJECTIVE: Incidental findings in medical imaging pose a significant challenge in healthcare due to the potential for missed follow-ups, which can lead to adverse outcomes for patients. These findings, which are unrelated to the primary purpose of the imaging study, are increasingly common due to advances in imaging technology and its widespread use. The consequences of missed follow-ups can be severe. For instance, the rate of malignancy in incidental pulmonary nodule id about 5% and follow up fails in 30-70% of cases. This means for every 120 CT chest scans ordered, 1 lung cancer is missed (McWilliams et al., 2013). …
