Introduction: Providing pathology results and appropriate recommendations after resection of colon polyps is mandatory. Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Google Bard, have shown promise in clinical workflows such as pathology results letters. We tested whether LLMs could provide appropriate surveillance recommendations based on current guidelines from the US multi-society task force for post-colonoscopy follow-up. Methods: Our aim was to compare the accuracy of ChatGPT 3.5, ChatGPT 4, and Google Bard in providing appropriate interval surveillance recommendations. An example prompt being “Write a patient pathology result letter after a colonoscopy with one tubular adenoma polyp (< 10mm) resected. Include recommendations for when the next surveillance colonoscopy should be completed.” Seventeen different post polypectomy surveillance queries and responses were analyzed (correct, partially correct, incorrect) compared to USMSTF guidelines. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution constrains FDA’s power to impose content-based restrictions on physicians’ professional speech – that is, on the expert medical advice licensed physicians render to patients during clinical treatment encounters. In 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clarified its plans to regulate clinical decision support (CDS) software by publishing a final guidance document. Urine osmolality is used throughout research to determine hydration levels. Prior studies have found black individuals to have elevated urine creatinine and osmolality, but it remains unclear which factors explain these findings. This cross-sectional, observational study sought to understand the relationship of self-reported race to urine creatinine and urine osmolality after accounting for age, socioeconomic status, and fluid intake. Data from 1,386 participants of the 2009–2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were utilized. Age, poverty-to-income ratio (PIR), urine flow rate (UFR), fluid intake, estimated lean body mass (LBM), urine creatinine, and urine osmolality were measured. In a sex-specific manner, …

California schools currently only screen for vision and hearing, leaving many other health concerns unaddressed. Among these, gastrointestinal (GI) health is particularly significant, as digestive disorders can lead to severe consequences, like malnutrition and stunted growth. By incorporating routine GI screenings, school nurses can promote the early detection of disease, allowing for timely intervention and improved health outcomes in children.

Based on existing literature, we have developed a novel pediatric GI screening tool for school nurses to use in routine screenings, presented below.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the deadliest and most common malignant CNS tumor. Despite advances in understanding its biology and the development of targeted therapies, effective treatment options remain limited. As a result, patient survival rates are dismal, with a 5-year survival rate of only 6.8% and an overall survival of less than two years. This poor outcome is partly due to our inability to treat GBM cells that infiltrate the whole brain. Focal treatments like surgery and radiotherapy alone are insufficient due to these invasive tumor cells. In recent decades, deep learning approaches have shown significant improvement in various image understanding tasks. However, analysis of high-resolution images remains a major challenge. In this work, we address the challenge of very high-resolution histopathological image (VHRHI) classification using a new information-theoretic discriminative patch selection approach. We show results on a high-resolution image dataset, namely, gigapixel whole slide tissue images for cancer tumors. Then we address how to efficiently classify challenging histopathology images, such as gigapixel whole-slide images for cancer diagnostics with image-level annotation. During May–July 2023, a cluster of 7 patients at local hospitals in Florida, USA, received a diagnosis of Plasmodium vivax malaria. Whole-genome sequencing of the organism from 4 patients and phylogenetic analysis with worldwide representative P. vivax genomes indicated probable single parasite introduction from Central/South America.

Bioengineering has made significant contributions to the treatment of orthopedic injury through interdisciplinary approaches. Central to these advancements are many orthopedic implants, including anchors and joint replacements, which have been designed to restore mobility. Despite their functional efficacy, these products have limited lifespan and are associated with many complications, such as implant-associated infection. The success of implant design and function, both in the short and long term, is paramount for enhancing patient outcomes and overall well-being. Long work hours, often including evenings and weekends, as well as frequently under pressure to meet the demands of athletes, coaches, and parents. Exposure to hydrochloric acid (HCl) can provoke acute and chronic lung injury. Because of its extensive production for industrial use, frequent accidental exposures occur, making HCl one of the top five chemicals causing inhalation injuries. There are no Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved treatments for HCl exposure. Context: Athletic trainers (ATs) inconsistently apply rehabilitation-oriented assessments (ROASTs) when deciding return-to-activity readiness for patients with an ankle sprain. Facilitators and barriers that are most influential to ATs' assessment selection remain unknown.

Objective: To examine facilitators of and barriers to ATs' selection of outcome assessments when determining return-to-activity readiness for patients with an ankle sprain.

Design: Cross-sectional study.

Setting: Online survey.

Patients or other participants: We sent an online survey to 10 000 clinically practicing ATs. The survey was accessed by 676 individuals, of whom 574 submitted responses (85% completion rate), and 541 respondents met the inclusion criteria.

Purpose: To assess the efficacy of various machine learning (ML) algorithms in predicting late-stage colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnoses against the backdrop of socio-economic and regional healthcare disparities. Methods: An innovative theoretical framework was developed to integrate individual- and census tract-level social determinants of health (SDOH) with sociodemographic factors. A comparative analysis of the ML models was conducted using key performance metrics such as AUC-ROC to evaluate their predictive accuracy. Spatio-temporal analysis was used to identify disparities in late-stage CRC diagnosis probabilities. Background: The coexistence of lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and pulmonary fibrosis poses significant challenges in clinical management due to shared risk factors, overlapping pathogenic mechanisms, and the complexity of co-managing multimorbid conditions. Smoking, environmental exposures, and genetic predispositions are critical shared risk factors, while common molecular mechanisms such as oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and aberrant tissue remodeling contribute to the pathogenesis of these diseases.
