This thesis first aims to understand how a part of the computed tomography (CT) algorithm called “forward projector” (FP) works and how it can be accelerated at a hardware level. Two methods of FP are defined and studied: pixel-driven and ray-driven. Both methods fundamentally use the property of line integral and Bresenham’s algorithm. As the result of the study of the two FP methods, the ray-driven algorithm implemented in C++ performed 35% faster than the pixe-driven algorithm implemented in Python.This thesis implements the ray-driven forward projector algorithm using field-programmable gate array (FPGA), making use of hardware-acceleration techniques. Endotracheal intubation and laryngoscopy potentiate the cardiovascular response in the form of hypertension, tachycardia, and ventricular arrhythmias. Suppression of this adrenergic response is necessary to ensure patient safety. Currently, anesthesia providers employ many methods to attenuate the sympathetic response without established guidelines. As such, our project aimed to determine the effectiveness of fentanyl compared to esmolol in attenuating the hemodynamic response during laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation within the first five minutes and throughout the intraoperative period.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common complication that contributes to increased length of hospital stay, impaired recovery, and can affect long-term outcomes. Consensus guidelines on the therapeutic drug monitoring of vancomycin published in 2020 recognize that using the calculated area-under-the-curve (AUC) to guide dosing maximizes clinical efficacy and minimizes risk when compared to traditional trough-based dosing. The purpose of this study was to determine whether AUC monitoring results in reduced acute kidney injury (AKI) rates in adult patients receiving vancomycin for all indications.

Introduction: Over 264,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed annually within the United States, with 99% of them being in women. Regarding prevention of this terrible disease, early detection of such cancers through screening mammography has up to a 20% reduction in breast cancer mortality. Therefore, the USPSTF recommends screening of women who are 50-74 years of age via mammography at average risk of breast cancer every two years. Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder that can significantly affect a patient’s psychological state. Because of this, medication nonadherence is reported as one of the most common causes of relapse and rehospitalization in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Although long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics can help provide more continuous treatment, they do not address other factors that affect treatment adherence. Background: Compliance with oral antipsychotic medications (OAP) in the treatment of patients with schizophrenia has been a challenge. Challenges to OAP include medication side effects, lack of ability to obtain medications, and missing doses, among other factors. As a result of this non-compliance, those taking oral antipsychotic medication are at greater risk for exacerbation of their illness. The consequence of relapse carries considerable risks with each psychotic event. Background

In recent years, there has been overwhelming evidence of opioid abuse and its adverse effects on patients’ lives. To combat this, significant attention has been paid to multimodal analgesia throughout the perioperative period to decrease patients’ exposure to opioids. While knowledge of the specific factors that distinguish tumor-promoting from non-tumor-promoting inflammation remains inchoate, nevertheless, as highlighted in this series on the 'Hallmarks of Cancer', it is clear that tumor-promoting inflammation is essential to neoplasia and metastatic progression making identification of specific factors critical. Materials and Methods. Between 11 March and 30 May 2020, 272 consecutive symptomatic female patients with COVID-19 who underwent chest CT imaging at baseline were reviewed. Pediatric pain management is often overlooked due to time constraints and lack of resources or education on interventions used, such as distraction or pharmacological therapy. Lack of pain management leads to patient and caregiver distress, as well as an increased number of attempts to perform the procedure. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a debilitating chronic illness that affects 6 out of 100 adults after a severe trauma. The alpha-adrenergic antagonist prazosin, which is prescribed off-label for flashbacks and nightmares due to trauma, is often continued indefinitely due to reports of symptoms returning upon discontinuation. There is no standard guidance for a trial of discontinuation of prazosin due to intolerance or side effects. In this case series, three patients are started on prazosin leading to remission of trauma-related symptoms, and symptoms continue to remit after treatment for an average of about 2 years followed by discontinuation of the medication. …

Introduction: The development of autonomous artificial intelligence for interpreting diabetic retinopathy (DR) images has allowed for point-of-care testing in the primary care setting. This study describes patient and provider experiences and perceptions of the artificial intelligence DR screening technology called EyeArt by EyeNuk during implementation of the tool at Western Maine Primary Care in Norway, Maine.

Methods: This non-randomized, single-center, prospective observational study surveyed 102 patients and 13 primary care providers on their experience of the new screening intervention.
