Abstract
Individuals having Genetic Thrombophilia pose a higher risk of having a thrombotic event. It is crucial to determine these gene variants to prevent a possible episode of thromboembolism. With the current PCR method, it involves individual processing of DNA isolation, amplification, and detection using three (3) different instruments resulting to an increased turnaround time of 5 to 7 days and additional staff utilization. It is performed by repetitive manual sample pipetting and preparation of reagent master mixes in small vials. Results interpretations are entered manually to a worklist built initially for final verification. These processes increase the risk of …

Interdevice Reliability Of A-Mode Ultrasound To Measure Body Composition, Megan Bigler
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
A-mode ultrasound is a noninvasive and rapid method for measuring subcutaneous fat thickness and estimating body fat percentage (%BF). The validity and reliability of the BodyMetrix BX2000 A-mode ultrasound has been reported; however, the purpose of this study was to compare results from two machines to determine interdevice reliability. Ultrasound measures were repeated with two BX2000 machines at 10 body sites (chest, biceps, triceps, scapula, lower back, hip, waist, thigh, calf, axilla) on 42 males of varying age and leanness (age: 28.6 ± 11.9 y, BMI: 25.4 ± 4.6 kg/m2). The intraclass correlation coefficients ranged from 0.939 to …
Simulating Alternative Tuberculosis Diagnosis Methods In Underdeveloped Countries, Luke Turner
Simulating Alternative Tuberculosis Diagnosis Methods In Underdeveloped Countries, Luke Turner
Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Tuberculosis is the deadliest infectious disease in the world; it is especially rampant in underdeveloped countries because they do not have the infrastructure, technology, or funding to properly combat the infection. However, the development of portable point-of-care diagnosis machines can reverse this epidemic as they far surpass conventional laboratory identification. The question now is where to place these machines, which is a difficult decision with a lack of data. Therefore, a flexible simulation model is created to test the implementation of these machines with different countries and configurations. The simulation tests the baseline model and three proposed implementations of the …

Data Visualization Of Treatment Outcomes For Tuberculosis Patients, Joy Jenkins
Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease, and different treatments have been discovered over the years. However, patients may develop various drug resistance levels that affect the likelihood of becoming cured or dying. In this study, we sought to employ data visualization to explore the relationship between treatment trajectory, as indicated by smear and culture results in the follow-up tests and patient outcomes. A large sample of patients have been broken down by demographics including age, gender, and drug resistance status. Sankey diagrams were used to visualize the pathway progression of the patients over time split between two time periods- months 0-6 …
Seeing Eye To Eye: A Machine Learning Approach To Automated Saccade Analysis, Maigh Attre
Seeing Eye To Eye: A Machine Learning Approach To Automated Saccade Analysis, Maigh Attre
Honors Scholar Theses
Abnormal ocular motility is a common manifestation of many underlying pathologies particularly those that are neurological. Dynamics of saccades, when the eye rapidly changes its point of fixation, have been characterized for many neurological disorders including concussions, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and Parkinson’s disease. However, widespread saccade analysis for diagnostic and research purposes requires the recognition of certain eye movement parameters. Key information such as velocity and duration must be determined from data based on a wide set of patients’ characteristics that may range in eye shapes and iris, hair and skin pigmentation [36]. Previous work on saccade analysis has …
Effect Of Long-Duration Standing And Sitting On Vascular Function, Zackary Vaughan
Effect Of Long-Duration Standing And Sitting On Vascular Function, Zackary Vaughan
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Background: An increase in sedentary lifestyle is a growing problem as it has a negative impact on vascular function leading to significantly higher risk of myocardial infarction and cardiovascular disease mortality. Both standing and sitting for extended periods of time affect endothelial function in lower leg vasculature. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and pulse wave velocity (PWV) are two variables that allow us to quantify endothelial function. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of long-duration sitting versus standing on lower body vasculature as assessed by PWV and FMD. Methodology: This study included 13 men and …

Through this quality improvement project, we have assessed the current fellows' upper endoscopy skill level during their first year and determined that the time to achieving proficiency is significantly longer than desired. The goal is to prepare new fellows for endoscopy prior to the beginning of their rotations with a curriculum that includes assigned reading materials, videos, and simulated endoscopic cases, to promote safety and increase satisfaction of patients by improving the readiness, skill level, and the confidence of first year inexperienced fellows.
Effectiveness Of Adaptive Utensils On Hand And Finger Range Of Motion In Individuals With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lauren Yeager
Effectiveness Of Adaptive Utensils On Hand And Finger Range Of Motion In Individuals With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lauren Yeager
Honors Theses
Individuals with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) often experience functional deficits that impair range of motion (ROM) in their hands and fingers. Daily tasks like opening jars and eating become more difficult and painful for individuals with RA because they lack the grip strength and adequate ROM to perform these activities. Because of this, efforts have been made to accommodate decreasing functionality due to decreased ROM. Adaptive utensils are currently being explored as a potential aid for hand and finger functional deficits. This study sought to quantify the ROM needed for individuals with RA to grip the handles of adaptive utensils of …

Multimodality Somatostatin Analog For Fluorescence-Guided Surgery In Cancer, Servando Hernandez Vargas
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Cancer surgery remains the primary curative treatment for most solid cancers and has major therapeutic implications for patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Anatomical and functional imaging technologies are widely used during the pre- and postoperative stages, but intraoperative disease recognition relies on direct visual inspection and the hands of surgeons. The limited number of clinical tools for real-time intraoperative visual feedback restricts the ability to remove the complete cancer source and is partially responsible for the high rate of disease recurrence in patients. Intraoperative imaging with fluorescent contrast agents has the potential to improve the ability of surgeons to detect …
Development Of Automated Radiotherapy Treatment Planning For Cervical And Breast Cancer For Resource-Constrained Clinics, Kelly Kisling
Development Of Automated Radiotherapy Treatment Planning For Cervical And Breast Cancer For Resource-Constrained Clinics, Kelly Kisling
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Globally, cancer rates are on the rise, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, many of these countries lack access to radiotherapy, which is due in part to a substantial shortage of the staff necessary to deliver safe and effective radiotherapy. This staff shortage could be mitigated by the automation of the radiation treatment planning process. To this end, we developed automated planning for cervical and postmastectomy breast cancer radiotherapy, the two most common types of cancer in women in many LMICs.
For radiotherapy of cervical cancer in resource-constrained clinics, the recommended treatment technique is a four-field box. We …

A variety of cognitive assessment tools are used to determine the functional status of the brain before and after injury in athletes. Questionnaires, neuropsychological tests, and electroencephalographic (EEG) measures have been recently used to directly assess brain function on and near the playing field. However, exercise can affect cognitive performance and EEG measures of cortical activity. To date, little empirical evidence exists on the effects of acute exercise on these measures of neurological function. We therefore quantified athlete performance on a standardized battery of concussion assessment tools and EEG measurements immediately before and after acute exercise to simulate conditions of …

The Effect Of Mechanical Agitator Geometry On Catheter Directed Thrombectomy, Sanghun Alex Lee
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a vascular disease in which a blood clot forms inside of a vein, most often deep in the legs, groin, or arm. Two types of VTE exist, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). DVT occurs when a clot in a deep vein forms, risking embolism and causing swelling as the clot obstructs blood flow. An embolism occurs when a part or all the thrombus breaks off and travels in the circulation, getting lodged in the lungs. A pulmonary embolism is a very serious medical condition and can be fatal if not treated immediately. Current …

Suffering In Silence: Is Gastroparesis Underdiagnosed?, Dennis J. Baumgardner
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
In this introduction to Volume 6, Issue 2, the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews offers additional comment to the clinical review of diabetic gastroparesis authored by Farmer and colleagues (p. 148), regarding the problem of undiagnosed disease. Increased awareness of this entity and appropriate questioning regarding symptoms of diabetic gastroparesis in the primary care setting may prevent the “suffering in silence” experienced by many patients with this complication.

Gastroparesis is defined as a delay in gastric emptying in the absence of mechanical obstruction in the stomach. Gastroparesis has a number of causes, including postsurgical, secondary to medications, postinfectious, idiopathic, and as a complication of diabetes mellitus, where it is underrecognized. The cardinal symptoms of diabetic gastroparesis are nausea, early satiety, bloating, and vomiting. Diabetic gastroparesis is more common in females and has a cumulative incidence of 5% in type 1 diabetes and 1% in type 2 diabetes. It is associated with a reduction in quality of life and exerts a significant burden on health care resources. The pathophysiology …

Patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have normal or increased bone mineral density (BMD) but despite that, they are characterized by an increased hip and vertebral fracture risk that involves the alteration of bone quality and not the reduction in bone mass. BMD is utilized for the diagnosis and evaluation of osteoporosis, but BMD itself cannot provide an accurate diagnosis of the individuals at increased risk of fracture and, therefore, studies have focused on identifying other risk factors that are partially or fully independent of BMD.
The fracture risk score tool-FRAX® models provide information about a 10-year probability of osteoporotic …

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
In the United States, prostate cancer is the leading type of cancer diagnosed in men. Prostate cancer is currently diagnosed with the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test; however, it leads to many false positives and therefore unneeded biopsies. Previous studies have shown that cancerous prostates have a much lower concentration of zinc than healthy prostates. The goal of this project is to create an MRI contrast agent capable of non-invasively quantifying zinc in the human prostate. Five out of the eight synthetic steps have been successfully completed so far, and the identities of these intermediate products have been verified by 1 …

Pain Management For Intrauterine Device Insertion And Endometrial Biopsy, Michelle Lipton-Carroll
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Intrauterine device (IUD) insertions and endometrial biopsies (EMB) can be painful in office gynecological procedures. In the clinical setting used for this evidence-based project (EBP) it was noted there was no consistent pain management being used for these procedures. For this EBP project a protocol for pain management during IUD insertions and EMBs was developed and implemented into this clinical setting. The protocol was created from an exhaustive literature search, which yielded six pieces of high-level evidence of good quality. The evidence supported the use of a 1% lidocaine paracervical block prior to IUD insertion and a 2% lidocaine intrauterine …

Childhood poverty has been associated with structural and functional alterations in the developing brain. However, poverty does not alter brain development directly, but acts through associated biological or psychosocial risk factors (e.g. malnutrition, family conflict). Yet few studies have investigated risk factors in the context of infant neurodevelopment, and none have done so in low‐resource settings such as Bangladesh, where children are exposed to multiple, severe biological and psychosocial hazards. In this feasibility and pilot study, usable resting‐state fMRI data were acquired in infants from extremely poor (n = 16) and (relatively) more affluent (n = 16) families in Dhaka, …
