Purpose/Background

Atrial fibrillation is considered the most common arrythmia affecting individuals globally with an estimated occurrence of 12.1 million individuals by 2030 in the US alone (Joglar et al., 2023). Recent evidence suggests lifestyle modification in combination with pharmacological therapy may decrease the overall financial and health burdens associated with atrial fibrillation (Elliot et al., 2023). The aim of this scoping review is to examine the existing literature to evaluate prescription only versus prescription and lifestyle modifications and its effect of reducing negative health outcomes and overall burden of atrial fibrillation diagnoses.

Harnessing social influences in daily life shows promise: digital micro-interventions could effectively engage these influences on PA and require testing.

Xenotransplantation is currently being pursued as one such alternative in adults in need of kidney or heart transplantation. Atrial septal defects (ASDs) are a common form of adult congenital heart disease, with surgical or transcatheter closure being the mainstay of treatment in patients with hemodynamic or clinical complications. Transcatheter repair of secundum ASD is safe and effective. Complex secundum ASDs with multifenestrated defects pose a unique challenge to transcatheter repair. We report a successful but complex transcatheter closure of an ASD using three overlapping Amplazter devices.

Chylopericardium is a rare condition. Causes include superior vena cava syndrome resulting from indwelling catheters. We present a case of this condition in a 42-year-old man with end-stage renal disease treated with hemodialysis through a right subclavian vein catheter. Transcatheter extraction of an intracardiac mass is a newer approach that may lead to nonsurgical treatment of complex cardiac masses. We present a case in which thrombectomy devices were combined to extract a right atrial mass, which highlights new frontiers in the treatment of complex transcatheter mass extraction. The combined use of two transcatheter thrombectomy devices (Kong and Godzilla) may provide a powerful addition to the existing armamentarium.

Introduction: Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) is considered the most advanced temporary life support which provides complete hemodynamic support in addition to gas exchange. There is limited data available on the impact of hyperlipidemia (HLD) on VA-ECMO patients. We sought to examine the national inpatient sample (NIS) database to describe in-hospital outcomes among these patients.

We report a case of a 28-year-old male with months of diffuse, pleuritic, intermittent, non-exertional chest pain. He had an elevated troponin and ECG showing Wellens’ syndrome and was found to have 80% LAD coronary artery occlusion and 100% apical occlusion. Identification and proper management of Wellens’ syndrome relies on being familiar with its ECG patterns. Other information such as age, cardiac risk factors, chest pain with exertion and at rest, and elevated troponin, are all helpful supplemental information, but as demonstrated in the following case report, presentations may vary or even cause as distractors to the diagnosis.

To address this gap, we scrutinized the National Inpatient Sample Database from 2019 to 2020 to elucidate in-hospital outcomes among older patients who underwent the Impella procedure.
