Abstract

Acupuncture is an complementary form of medicine that has relatively recently become a component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It involves the application of thin needles at specific points throughout the body, although initially, general areas instead of points were used. There are estimated to be about 395 different points that can be utilized, and the technique behind using these points can vary widely between practitioners. In addition to acupuncture points, TCM is said to use meridians or pathways along with qi, or energy flows. In terms of acupunctures’ utility, it has been known to treat a variety of …

Efficacy Of Adjunct Acupuncture (Insertive And Non-Insertive) In The Treatment Of Neonates With Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Kali Thibault

Capstone Showcase

Introduction: Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is a condition that affects newborn infants exposed to opioids in utero. NAS is becoming increasingly more prevalent due to the ongoing opioid epidemic. Current treatment for NAS is primarily morphine or buprenorphine. Even on these treatments, infants with NAS often still have symptoms of withdrawal, requiring high doses of medication and extended hospital stays. Acupuncture therapy has been shown to decrease withdrawal symptoms in adults, so researchers are now looking to use this non-pharmacological treatment on infants with NAS.

Methods: A literature search was performed using Google Scholar, PubMed, and EBSCOhost in November of …

The Role Of Traditional Chinese Medicine In The Management Of Chronic Pain: A Biopsychosocial Approach, John Burns, Tiffany A. Mullen

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

The National Institute of Medicine revealed that chronic pain affects more than 100 million adults in the United States, citing chronic pain as the leading reason patients seek medical care. Pain is also an extremely costly problem, with $635 billion per year spent nationally, more than cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined. The biomedical model of chronic pain management has largely revolved around the use of narcotic analgesics for pain control. Unfortunately, this corresponds to a growth in the rate of abuse, misuse and overdose of these drugs. Additionally, there is an inherent failure rate to the myriad procedures used …
